  • why can't cows digest cellulose?

Cellulose comprises 80 percent of plant matter. Why can't cows (or giraffes etc.) which eat only plants not digest 80 percent of their only food source? and for my follow up-

Why the heck can ship worms digest cellulose without symbiotic bacteria when cows or other ruminants cannot? or have I totally misunderstood this?

  • How will flooding affect the garden?

so we've had about 10 inches of rain today and my yard is about an inch underwater. seems like its draining but the rain puts it back in about as fast as it goes out.(it's still raining). How will this affect the veggies?

I am anticipating the rain will stop at some point today. at least long enough to drain the yard.

  • Can I start planting?

Ok. So I'm a rookie gardner, and am absolutely chomping at the bit to start a new veg/flower garden. But the weather is uncertain where I am-what with climate change we do not really know when our last frost is until 4 weeks after it has passed. What I really want to know is, can I lay seeds down now when it might frost again (it may be four days from now, it may be five weeks, it may be november should I bite my tongue and wait? Or go outside with spade in hand?

  • What is the best book you have ever read?

I'm in the process of creating an instant library for a teenager not necessarily used to reading but a strong reader. I could create a list of 100 best books without any trouble but I want input on what YOUR favorite book was. A 100 books is impractical, i'm aiming for ten excellent works. Does not have to be current fiction. So far I'm thinking Twilight('cause I have to), poetry by kipling, and breakfast of champions by kurt vonnegut. Shakespeare was rejected on the grounds that it is better to see Shakespeare performed then to read it. Under consideration is a winters tale by mike helprin, our bodies ourselves(well why not?), the liars club by mary carr and beowulf (NOT the movie.)

Lay what you got on me. I need your suggestions.

  • So any body got a notion as to where I can buy teff?

I am trying to make injera and this ingredient does not seem to be substitutable.I did try and the result while not bad per se, was not what I hoped for. I have found berbere, so I'm good there, so if you have a location that you buy from please share.

It does not seem to be available locally although there is always a possibility that I have overlooked something/someplace. If you know of a way to order from internet/by mail please share.

  • ok here's a hard one-where can I buy teff(a type of grain from africa) in kansas city?

am trying to cook Ethiopian meal, and teff is a non-substitutable ingredient for injera-a style of sourdough. If you say city market-HA! done tried, unless you know of a specific vendor by name/location.

as an alternat if anyone knows where to buyinjera itself that would be good too.

    any and all answers welcome

  • I have recently heard that tuna fish is bad for kitties. is this true?

and if so why is tuna bad for cats? is it the mercury-I think that if the mercury levels were ok for people, they should be good for animals. Well not that mercury is good for animals, but that mercury levels in tuna are safe for cats. This is referring to canned tuna, not fresh.

  • What is up with that weird smell in terra haute?

While traveling through terra haute we encountered this weird odor is best described as Chemical-ish or fertilizy. Anybody know what causes this? We asked around and the locals said it was normal. It seemed to ebb and flow and was not specific to any one location in terra haute-not specfic to a factory, railroad, or field.

  • is it true that kansas city has open sewers?

I am particulary referring to brush creek. I sometimes work in an office there and there is a sign next to brush creek which says"stream recives combined sewer overflows avoid contact during and 72 hours after rain storm."

such cities as Bangalore, India and carmen del sur, Republic of the Phillipenes have closed sewers. how did kansas city get left behind on this 19th century invention?
