  • Linux Distro for Gateway E-3400?

I'm working on a computer that I'm trying to do a clean install on. I tried using Windows XP but I couldn't get a key to activate the system. As an alternative I'm looking for a linux version that is the most compatible with this computer, which is extremely old.

The couple who owns the computer are basic users and they are used to Windows XP. Are there any versions of linux that would perform well given the specs, and still have a similar look/feel as XP?

    Gateway E-3400

Windows XP Service Pack 1(32 bit) << what I tried to install

Windows 98 << What it was originally designed for

    Intel Pentium III Processor

930 MHz and 256 MB of RAM

The computer was originally built with windows 98 on it.

    This was my original question.

  • Multiple Viruses and Windows OS on one computer.?

I have a computer that I'm working on that has multiple problems, most of which I'm sure overlap.

    The specs are:

    Gateway E-3400

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (32 bit)

    Intel Pentium III Processor

930 MHz and 256 MB of RAM

    1) The computer constantly locks up to the point of needing a hard restart.

    2) I installed Malwarebytes and it found 189 different threats during a scan. I had them removed.

    3) I installed AVG Free Anti-Virus and ran it while the computer was in safe mode(it only let me run AVG in Command Line Mode). It didn't find any threats.

    4) The computer has old software (IE version 6, and an old version of FireFox). There was no antivirus as far as I could see, except for CA Pest Control from Comcast, before I installed AVG.

    5) On boot up the computer asks which OS I want to use. I normally pick the first option. I tried booting up with the second operating system just to see what as on it. The system wouldn't let me use the mouse. I had to navigate through the Control Panel using the keyboard. I don't know what kind of files are on it so I don't know if I can delete that operating system or what. The only Partition on the hard drive is the C drive.

    6) While Updating Internet Explorer, I got a message from AVG that it had found a threat:

    File Name: C:\WINDOWS.0\system32\diskcopyi.exe

    Threat Name: Trojan horse Dropper.VB.CMD

    Process Name: C:\WINDOWS.0\system32\MRT.exe

AVG said removing the file could cause a crash or system instability. I did a search for info on the diskcopyi.exe file and only came up with "diskcopy.exe', nothing with an "i" at the end of the file name. So I'm assuming either this file was created for/by the trojan or one of the other viruses to mimic "diskcopy.exe", or its a file that one of the Windows OS copies actually needs.

  • Should I draft a contract for an advertisement agreement between web sites?

I have a small blog and I had spoken with a larger online magazine about featuring some of their articles and vice versa. I received an email a few days ago from the contact person of the ezine. he said that he would be willing to exchange links as well as articles. If I still wanted to follow through with everything.

Should I draft a contract that would line out everything that we would be doing? That way neither one of us could turn around and charge the other, or for whatever other reason try to take advantage of one another. Or could the emails themselves count as the agreement being "on paper"?

  • Is there a simple tutorial for developing Android Apps using NetBeans?

I decided that I wanted to learn to develop Android apps. I've had hell all day trying to install the right programs, and all of the SDKs. Now I can't find a simple tutorial. I installed NetBeans, but I haven't found a straightforward tutorial on how to develop android apps using it, let alone attach all of the necessary tools to develop and test an app. The Android Developer's website only has instructions using the Eclipse IDE(I didn't use Eclipse because of how frustrating the installation process was).

I have installed nbandroid as instructed on the netbeans site, but it seems like I was left hung to dry after that. Is there a simple, one stop web site for me to learn Java and Android development without having to use tutorials from 50 different sites?

  • Runtime Error 453 for all programs?

On my family computer (running Windows 7) my little brother's account is not able to open any of the programs. Every time I try to open a program, from MS Word to Internet Explorer, I get the "Open With" window, which then returns the "Runtime Error 453 - DLL Entry point... etc." message. I did a scan with McAfee total protection and it came up clean. Originally, it had said that 1 virus had been detected in the previous scan (which must've been an automatic scan), but I couldn't open the log to see what it was. I tried to do a scan with Malwarebytes and I kept getting the above runtime error message and the "open with" window.

Next I rebooted the computer in safe mode and used the Malwarebytes-Chameleon program to try to run mbam. (I tried this before rebooting in safe mode and all attempts failed). In safe mode, I finally got mbam updated and running, but it still came back saying everything was clean. Is this a virus, malware, or is there something else going on? I looked in the Program Files(x86) folder and all of the programs that I tried to use are there.

This problem is only happening on this one profile, which is a standard user account. My account(which is one of 2 administrator accounts) works fine.

  • I can't activiate my McAfee Total Protection 2010?

I have a paid version of McAfee Total Protection 2010. After installing the program whenever I tried to activate it the "Activating Your Product" window came up, but never went anywhere from there. It just showed the loading animation spinning in circles. I've left it doing that overnight before with the same sreen up when I returned, so it's not my computer just being slow.

I've uninstalled the program using the normal windows tools, I've reinstalled it and used uninstallation software like Revo Uninstaller, then reinstalled again, and used the McAfee removal tool. And I've reinstalled it again with the same result. The activation screen does not progress. What's going on?

  • Black Smoke and TPS High Reading?

I have an 89 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, 3.3L engine. The CEL has been on for a while now. Over the past couple of months I've been working on the car trying to get it in shape for a drive from Texas to Missouri. I had taken it to a dealership and they didn't give me any specific answer from their diagnostic, but said that my TPS, MAF/MAS, and/or oxygen sensor was faulty. I replaced them all on my own. All of the repairs went smooth, except for when I put the TPS connector back in, some of the prongs broke. The car drove perfectly for a while, then after I replaced the O2 sensor it started driving bad again. It was jerky and i usually had to tap the gas once I put it in gear to keep it from dying out (when cold). When decelerating the car would jerk a little.l Last week I took it to Orileys and ran a diagnostic on it my self. It said that the TPS was grounded low. I assumed it was from the connector being broken, so I bought another to replace it.

I replaced the connector this past Sunday. After the connector was replaced, the car started acting worse than before. The idle was rough, the car died and could hardly hold an idle. It was rough when I connected the vacuum hose, and a little smoother when I took it off. I had another diagnostic run on it, and the code for "TPS High" came up. I managed to make the trip from TX to MO, but the car would die out at low speeds, and a lot of black smoke would come out of the tail pipe. I had put some fuel injector cleaner in the car, thinking it would stop the smoke, when I first gassed up to make the trip. At one point I also noticed white smoke coming from where the catalytic converter and the muffler connect. It had been raining, so I assumed it was steam, plus I haven't seen any smoke coming from that part of the car as of late.

I had also adjusted the idle screw from time to time to set it high enough to keep the car running at low speeds and stop lights. i ran another diagnostic on it yesterday an the same reading for "TPS High" came up. I also saw something in the "history" for code 34 (something to do with the ECU), but I'm not sure if that was from my car or someone else's.

I don't have much money to work with, and can't get a job too far away from home until I get my car running again, so any repair advice that I could do myself is appreciated.

  • Can i own a handgun in missouri without getting a chl?

I know the concealed handgun license is made specifically for people who plan to carry their guns on them. I don't plan on carrying mine around on me though. Does missouri law require me to get a chl anyway?

I'm moving to MO soon, but currently in Texas. Here, we're not required to have a chl if we only plan to keep the gun in the car or at home.

  • Police harassment is imaginary?

While driving home from work with a coworker the other morning (2am, I work the night shift at a local warehouse), an officer followed me for 5 miles to a local gas station. The officer had been driving in front of me, but stopped and waited for me to pass him. I drove to the store(a public place with plenty of lighting, witnesses, and video cameras) instead of going straight home because I knew he was following me, and wasn't about to turn down one of the dark, empty roads (I live in the country) to give him cover for whatever he was trying to do.

I wasn't speeding (once I saw the officer was following me I slowed down to 5mph below the speed limit), I wasn't swerving or driving like I was drunk or impaired, I had no head or tail lights out, my inspection stickers are all good, and my license plates are valid. He had no reason to pull me over, that's why he couldn't do anything but follow me and wait for me to stop the car before continuing his harassment. On the way to the store, he also was trying to see if he could provoke me to react suspiciously to him being there (ie. throw something out of the car, turn down a back road off the highway, or speed up to try to get away from him). When I changed lanes, he would pull up in my blind spot, then give me space. Next he would pull up right next to me (looking into the car I guess), then he sped up as if he was going to pass me (I guess trying to get a better view), then back up into my blind spot again. Instead I kept minding my business like he wasn't there. He stayed in my blind spot for the rest of the drive until I changed lanes to turn into the store's parking lot. That's not a coincidence that he was driving that way, because I've seen other officers do that to me as well as others before. I don't know if that is something they train the officers to do, or if it's just a trick of the trade that the older officers teach the newer ones. Either way, it's still provocation.

He got out of his car and stood in front of my car, waiting for my coworker and I to get out. He questioned me outside the store, asking where I was coming from and where I was going. I told him I had just got off work and asked him if I needed to call my supervisor. He said no. When he asked where I was going we told him "in the store". He opened the door for me to go in, then followed me around the store after letting me go inside(technically, once he stopped questioning me that should've been the end of the altercation - I was "free to go"). When I say he followed me around the store, he pretended to be shopping, but was always standing in a spot where I was in full view. When I moved to a different aisle, he moved too.

While I was checking out, the officer went back outside and began looking in the windows my car, and checking the door handles to see if they were unlocked (according to the cashier and my coworker). I'll talk to the manager of the store about getting a copy of the security video from that night to be sure. He stepped away from the car when my coworker went outside to ask him what he was doing, then went to get back in his car as I came out to ask for his name and badge number. My coworker and I went back into the store to wait for him to leave afterward.

The funny thing is that at the SAME TIME the officer was following me, a teen was being robbed on the other side of town.

I'm going to file a complaint, but I have to have all of my ducks in a row because I Know they will give the the runaround in order to file a complaint (I've already tired calling his superior officer) and when I finally do speak to someone I will have to have my complaint on it's Ps and Qs.I'm in Texas by the way, so I'm not surprised of whatever the outcome is.

I believe this is clearly harassment as well as racial profiling, but I'm sure there are plenty of loopholes that the department can use to make excuses for his actions. Any legal advice, is appreciated.

  • Software/Game Development Job Prep?

I'm a student studying computer science. I am about to enter my Senior year, but looking to (eventually) get a job working with a game development company, or other software development firm. Developing video games independently is my ultimate goal.

Since I've been in school, I have developed an intermediate skill in C++ (I can create basic console based programs). Because of my current job (a full time job unrelated to my major) and financial need (I have to work in order to get back and forth from school) I don't have time to get an unpaid internship. I try to practice and develop my programming skills, but lack the challenge and hands-on experience of being a part of the development process of actual software. From the job searches that I've done, most companies don't only want someone with a degree, but someone with experience, too.

So, lacking experience, what can I do to develop a portfolio impressive enough to land an entry level (or paid internship) position with a software development company (or improve the portfolio that I already have)?

To give you an idea of the portfolio I already have, I developed an interactive program dealing with data structures (arrays and sorting is all it consists of now, I'm still working on the linked lists and trees). It opens with a menu, giving the user the option to choose the type of data structure they want to create/manipulate. Once they choose the data structure type, they are taken to another menu that gives them the option of using randomly generated data(which is only integer data at this point), or entering the data themselves. Throughout the program the user is given the option to have the data printed to screen sorted (in ascending or descending order) or unsorted. Next, they can try the exercise again, or go back to the main menu. All possible actions are prompted. The program also prevents users from inputting data of the wrong type when prompted for info. And, again it runs in the command console.

    Thanks

  • Loss of power after spark plug change?

I changed my spark plugs yesterday and now the car has no power, it won't go over 25 mph, and you almost have to floor it just to get up to that speed. It sounds OK when it is in idle, but you can tell the rhythm of the engine changes once you put the car in gear. Except for having to tap the gas to keep the car from dying once put in gear, the car was driving fine before the spark plug change. The spark plugs were the only thing that I touched.

I've changed the gaps on the plugs 2 or 3 different times, I've put the old plugs back into the car, i've switched the wiring in case that was the problem, switched them back. Still no luck. Does anyone have an idea of what's wrong?
