If evolution is such a slow process, why do we not see living transitional forms on the planet? Are we to assume that every living thing evolves at the exact same rate?

Also, will someone please explain to me how natural selection would be a means for inter-species evolution? As far as I can tell, natural selection causes a species to contain superior specimen, not a different species.
