  • When swapping out mobo's in a system, what criteria must be matched to ensure system will boot.?

I had an OEM system and the mobo failed. I pulled the HDD out and slipped into another similar system ( E-Machines ) This worked fine, and I retrieved all user files and data that would have been otherwise locked. Now I have 2 other older machines (P4-700, and Pent D-2.8Ghz ) and their mobo's are obsolete. I haven't looked on E-bay, but would rather find a better/compatible mobo that would accept the os. I know that a system will not boot up from just any HDD. Does any PC expert out there know what the key components need to be matched for a new mobo? ie. BIOS or even rev, NB or SB Chip-sets, mobo brand/series.
