  • SAT Scores for College and Scholarships?

My current SAT scores are high enough for me to get into the colleges that I'm applying to; however, I plan to retake it to increase my chances for scholarships. Does it matter if the score I am submitting to the colleges differs from the one I submit to scholarship programs?

  • French Question: I want to use "they" as a subject for a sentence. Do I use Ils or Elles?

I know that giraffe in French is "la girafe", meaning that it is feminine, however when I want to use the pronoun "they" would it be correct to use "ils" or "elles"? I assume it would be "ils" since using "elles" would imply that they are all girls, but I just want to be sure. Also if I want to say "it", would I also use "il"?

  • Can someone please explain these documents to me? (last 2 documents)?

It is not denied that there are implied as well as express powers, are that the former are as effectually delegated as the latter. And for the sake of accuracy it shall be mentioned, that there is another class of powers, which may be properly denominated resulting powers. It will not be doubled, that if the United States should make a conquest of any of the territories of its neighbors, they would possess sovereign jurisdiction over the conquered territory. This would be rather a result from the whole mass of the powers of the government, and from the nature of political society, than a consequence of either of the powers specially enumerated…

It is conceded that implied powers are to be considered as delegated equally with express ones. Then it follows, that as a power of erecting a corporation [such as a bank] may as well be implied as any other thing, it may as well be employed as an instrument or means whatever. The only question must be, in this, as in every other case, whatever the means to be employed, or, in this instance, the corporation to be erected, has a natural relation to any of the acknowledged object or lawful ends of the government. Thus a corporation may not be erected by Congress for superintending the police of the city of Philadelphia, because they are not authorized to regulate the police of that city. But one may be erected in relation to the trade with foreign countries, or to the province of the federal government to regulate those objects, and because it is incident to a general sovereign or legislative power to regulate a thing, to employ all the means which regulate to its regulation to the best and greatest advantage.

    Alexander Hamilton

Opinion on the Constitutionality of an Act

    to Establish a Bank, 1791

...I consider the foundation of the Constitution as laid on this ground: that all powers not delegated to the United States, by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it the states, or the people (XII amend). To take a simple step beyond the boundaries thus specially drawn around the powers of the Congress, is to take possession of a boundless fields of power, no longer susceptible of any definition.

The incorporation of a bank, and the powers assumed by this bill, have not, in my opinion, been delegated to the United States by the Constitution.

  • Can someone please explain this document to me?

The idea of an actual representation of all classes of the people is altogether visionary. Unless it were expressly provided for in the Constitution that each different occupation should send one or more members, the thing would never take place in practice. Mechanics and manufacturers will always be inclined, with few exceptions, to give their votes to merchants in preference to persons of their own professions or trades. Those discerning citizens are well aware that the mechanic and manufacturing arts furnish the materials of mercantile enterprise and industry. Many of them are, indeed, connected with the operations of commerce. They know that the merchant is their natural patron and friend; they are aware that however great the confidence they may justly feel in their own good sense, their interests can more effectually be promoted by the merchant than by themselves. They are sensible that their habits in life have not been such as to give them those acquired endowments, without which in a deliberative assembly the greatest natural abilities are for the most part useless; and that the influence and weight of the superior acquirements of the merchants render them more equal to a contest with any spirit which might happen to infuse itself into the public councils, unfriendly to the manufacturing and trading interests... [A]rtisans and manufactures will commonly be disposed to bestow their votes upon the merchants whom they recommend. We must therefore consider merchants as the natural representatives of all these classes of the community.

With regard to the learned professions, little need be observed; they truly form no distinct interest in society, and according to their situation and talents, will be indiscriminately be the objects of the confidence and choice of each other and of other parts of the community... They will feel a neutrality to the rivalships between different branches of industry, and... thus more likely to be an impartial arbiter among the diverse interests of the society...

  • Can someone please explain these documents to me?

    theyre a little confusing haha

    Document A

…All communities divide themselves into the few and the many. The first are the rich and well born; the other, the mass of the people. The voice of the people has been said to be the voice of God; and however generally this maxim has been quoted and believed, it is not true in fact. The people are turbulent and changing: they seldom judge or determine right. Give therefore to the first class a distinct, permanent share in the government. They will check the unsteadiness of the second; and as they cannot receive any advantage by a change, they therefore will ever maintain good government.

    Alexander Hamilton (1787)

…Our country is too large to have all its affairs directed by a single government. Public servants, at such a distance and from under the eye of their constituents, must from the circumstances of distance, be unable to administer and overlook all the details necessary for the good government of the citizens, and the same circumstance by rendering detection impossible to their constituents, will invite the public agents to corruption, plunder, and waste…
