  • Are police officers allowed to break traffic laws without their lights/siren on?

I constantly notice police officers failing to use their signals, rolling through stop signs, etc. when driving. Additionally, I was recently pulled over for speeding (got just a warning), but when the officer was talking to me, he said that at one point he was driving well over the speed limit in order to catch up to me. He didn't turn his lights on until he stopped behind me at a stoplight, and the light finally went green. I have always been under the impression that in order to break any traffic laws, police cars had to have their lights or siren on. I know that laws differ depending on region. I live in Portland, Oregon. Does anyone know the answer to this for sure?

  • Is it possible to split traffic between a wired and wireless network?

I know it's possible for a computer to connect to both, a wired and wireless network at the same time. I am wondering if there is any way to specify which of the two network connections a particular program uses to connect to the internet in either Windows XP or Vista? I would like to be able to use my wired connection for regular web browsing, and the wireless connection for a file transfer application. I regularly upload and download RAW images to/from servers, and this uses up quite a bit of bandwidth, slowing down regular internet processes, such as web browsing. By delegating certain programs to use a separate connection I can use the same computer for both, and there should not be any slow-down in web browsing due to bandwidth being used by the file transfers.

  • What is the best way to raise a couch to the second floor via the patio / balcony?

Due to poor building design, I cannot move my couch through the front door of my new apartment. The only other way seems to somehow raise it up to the balcony from ground level, and pull it up into the apartment. I have never done this before, so I am wondering if anyone with experience can give me some pointers. Some people have suggested using ropes to help with the pulling/tilting process once the couch is being lifted up by people below. I wouldn't even know where to tie the ropes/straps. Any and all pointers would be very helpful.

  • How can I back up my xbox 360 hard drive?

I currently have the xbox 360 premium, with the 12gb hard drive, and am thinking of upgrading to the elite system for the benefit of HDMI. However, I don't want to lose all my saved games and saved profile information. How can I back up the current hard drive, so I can then transfer that data over to the new 360? I would use a memory card, but it seems like I have several gigs of stuff on there, and I doubt one card would hold more than a small fraction of that, and I'm trying to avoid going back and forth a bunch of times. Is there any way to back up my current drive onto something like a flash drive, external USB hard drive, or even my PC, and then transfer the data back over to the new one?

  • How do I keep my desk chair from squeaking when rocking?

I got a really nice leather office chair for my house, but within a few weeks, it started squeaking when rocking. This has happened to me with all my other desk chairs with the rocking function. The squeak seems to be coming from the spring that allows the chair to rock (the one you tighten or loosen, depending on how you like it), but the spring is entirely covered by the plastic knob used to tighten it. Since it's covered, I can't really get to it with WD40, even when using that straw thing it comes with. I'm not overloading the chair, since I only weigh 170 lbs, so I'm not quite sure what to do about the squeak. Any suggestions?

  • Why don't golf courses allow players to share club sets?

I have been trying to convince my friend to go golfing with me, but he doesn't have any clubs. I figured we'd just be able to share mine, but I was recently informed that each player has to have their own set. Is there a legitimate reason for not being allowed to share a set?

  • How far in advance are employers required by law to post schedules for part-time employees?

There is a major issue at my place of work regarding scheduling. I do not typically receive my schedule for any given week (Sunday-Saturday) until the Friday before the week starts. Thus, I only have one day of notice as to when I work on any Sunday. Surely there must be some sort of labor law that dictates how far in advance employees are supposed to post schedules for part-time employees with variable shifts. I have tried searching online, but haven't been able to find any information. I live in Oregon, if it's any help.

  • Which masters program would be better for a Biology major?

I'm currently in Biomedical Engineering and it seems way over my head. Thinking of switching to Master of Public Health, especially since my long term goal is to go to med school. Would this be a more appropriate program, considering my background, or do I not have enough preparation for it? If anyone has gotten their MPH degree, how difficult was it?

  • How challenging would a Master of Public Health program be for a Biology major / Chemistry minor?

I just started my Masters program in Biomedical Engineering and it's way over my head, mainly due to the very advanced molecular biochemistry and engineering courses (I've never had any engineering classes before - just basic physics). My other choice was MPH, and I've already been accepted to such a program, but chose the BME one instead. I am now strongly considering switching into the MPH program. However, I don't want to get myself into the same situation. I graduated with a Bio major and Chem minor. I've had introductory statistics as part of that coursework, and have taken a few random public health electives. Does anyone know if I would be getting into something I'm not prepared for again, or would this be something I am more prepared for?
