  • Do I need permission to use photographs I take of others?

I'm starting my own small photography business and I want to post a portfolio of my work to my website, as well as have a hard copy portfolio. Both of these would be for advertisement purposes.

Do I need to get permission from the subjects in the photo? As the photographer, it looks as if I own the work (see insert below from copyright.gov website) but I want to be certain as I've seen many permission forms regarding photos.

    Per copyright.gov website:

"Ownership of a “copy” of a photograph – the tangible embodiment of the “work” – is distinct from the “work” itself – the intangible intellectual property. The owner of the “work” is generally the photographer or, in certain situations, the employer of the photographer. Even if a person hires a photographer to take pictures of a wedding, for example, the photographer will own the copyright in the photographs unless the copyright in the photographs is transferred".

  • Cruelty free toothpaste that doesn't taste like BLAH!?!?!?

Okay... so I've spent about $40 on various cruelty free toothpastes and all of them taste like either NOTHING or like some sort of putrid hand lotion or something! I don't even care if it's vegan... I just want to find one that hasn't been tested on animals and doesn't contain non-vegetarian animal ingredients. I thought that at least ONE of the national brands would not test on animals... but so far I haven't found it. PETA's "compassionate shopper" list says that Oral B currently has a moratorium on testing (they aren't doing it on a temporary basis, hopefully to become permanent), but I've not been able to find ADULT toothpaste from them... just kids stuff (that's like berry flavored, or bubblegum flavored). I just want a normal, mint type toothpaste that actually makes my mouth feel like I just brushed it. Am I on a wild goosechase???

  • Substitute for so much sugar??

This question is related to baking substitutes... such as applesauce instead of oil, baking soda & cream of tartar in place of baking powder, etc.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good ways to reduce the amount of sugar used in baking (cookies, breads, cakes, etc) without using artificial sweeteners. For instance, I made zucchini bread last night, which called for 2c of sugar. It also called for 1c. of oil, which I used applesauce instead (I almost always sub applesauce for oil in baked goods)... turned out great... but I'm wondering if there is anything you can use in place of part of the sugar in such recipes, to make it healthier. Any ideas??

  • What is a good, cruelty-free lipstick?

I've been using Revlon Colorstay - which I LOVE as it keeps it's color all day and is even kissproof! But I know Revlon is not a cruelty free company. Now that I'm almost out of it... I'd rather replace it with something else. But I really want something that holds it's color all day (I don't mind using gloss to restore shine... as long as the color stays). Anyone have any suggestions???

  • Recipe for fail-proof vegetarian marshmallows?

Does anyone have a fail-proof recipe for vegetarian or vegan marshmallows? (For those who will give some rude answer like "give me a break, marshmallows are not meat" - normal marshmallows contain gelatin - derived from boiling flesh, bones & tendons).

I tried one using agar-agar, but it didn't work. I ended up with a clear syrup that never "puffed" when whipped and never thickened beyond syrup.

All the recipes I see online are the same or very similar.

I'm going to try it one more time - boiling the agar-agar (which was not called for in this recipe, just said to let it soften, then mix it into the already-boiling mixture of sugar & corn syrup).

All the ratings on similar recipes sound like others have had exactly the same problem, even boiling the agar-agar though. I am in desperate need of marshmallows! HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

  • How tall do asparagus plants (the vegetable) get??

Hi... I'm thinking about planting an asparagus bed, but I'm finding conflicting information about it. Most online sites state that the plants get quite tall (5ft or so) and bushy, thus taking up a bit of space and creating a lot of shade to other plants. However, the asparagus roots being sold at Walmart state they only get 5-7 INCHES tall. ????? Help? 5-7 inches I can handle in my garden... but 5ft will require that I do a lot of prep work, locating an area of yard I want to give up for the next 15yrs or so. Does anyone have these plants???

  • How can I get my hens to start laying again???

I got three chickens back around Halloween. After a few weeks, they started producing about an egg every other day, between the two of them that were old enough. The third turned out to be a rooster, which we gave away. That made my hens mad and they stopped laying for a couple weeks, but started up again and were laying normally. Now, several months later, I switched them to an organic layer feed (versus the old non-organic one) and they stopped laying. I switched them to an organic pellet (for layers), which they seem to like, but it's been 3 weeks and I haven't gotten ANY eggs. I only got 5 in the whole month of March, and NONE since mid-march..

What can I do to get my hens to lay again? We currently have about 14hrs of natural light, and they get 15hrs in their coop. They layed all winter... why stop now???

PS... these hens free-range in my large yard, but I give them layer feed in addition to the bugs, etc. they find. Also, I don't use chemicals in my lawn.

  • Anyone know a good (or ANY?) vegetarian barbecue sauce?

I'd prefer a storebought variety, if it exists. I used to LOVE Bullseye & KC Masterpiece, but they refuse to tell me whether their "natural flavors" are animal derived. I'm not vegan, but I don't want to flavor my veggie kabobs with animal fat or flavor. I cant imagine that a good vegetarian barbecue sauce doesn't exist. Do you know of one??

  • Idea for vegetarian St Patricks Day dinner?

I want to throw a party for St Pats day, but wondering if there are any traditional Irish dishes that can be made vegetarian. I've always done Corned Beef & Cabbage... which obviously won't work now that I'm a veggie... Ideas anyone? I don't care how easy/difficult it is... I love to cook, but it must be something meat-eaters will love too. Thanks for your help!

  • Are there any good fish or shrimp substitutes?

Are there any good fake "fish" or "shrimp" products?? I use a lot of the Morningstar products, but I've never seen any fake fish or seafood products. Does anyone know of any? Websites (so I can see what local stores carry it) would be helpful! Thanks!

  • Experiences with Compost Tumbler? Good & Bad Please?

I'm considering getting one of those CompostTumblers (the name brand ones, not a knock-off). I've been getting info in the mail on them for years and they look really great... IF everything they say about them is true. But I am really more interested in knowing what actual PEOPLE think about them. Do you have one? Does it work as easy/well as they say it does? Would you suggest it? Have you had problems with one? Etc? Or... do you have a cheaper suggestion that works well? No compost piles or other hard-work/stinky options. Thanks!

  • What's best for cement walls?

I have a large basement with cement floor and walls. I want to convert it into a game room, for a pool table, foosball, etc. What is the best thing to do with the walls? I think I want to paint them and possibly do some stencil work of sports logos, etc. (Don't really want to use drywall, etc as it CAN get mildly damp down there when we have local flooding) What is the most durable paint that can be used on cement that comes in colors that would work in a game room?

  • Is saltwater taffy vegetarian?

I've recently discovered how many foods contain gelatin, and are therefore not vegetarian. Does saltwater taffy have gelatin or is it something else that makes it chewy? I don't have the bag or I'd just read the label. Thanks!

  • No marshmallows? Only some yogurts? What else?

OMG! So I've been ovo-lacto veg for going on two years now. JUST noticed today that my favorite yogurt contains gelatin. THEN I find out that MARSHMALLOWS do to?!?! WTF!

I mean, I read labels religiously! But there's some things you just don't expect to find animal products in! HELP! What else is off limits, when you wouldn't expect it to be?

PS... honestly... the whole "gelatin made of hooves, etc" thing I THOUGHT was old info. I had no idea they still made it that way! YUK! Even if I wasn't vegetarian I wouldn't wanna eat that! GROSS!

  • Anyone know if Tillamook's yogurt is suitable for vegetarians?

I ask, because as I'm enjoying my yogurt (I'm lacto-ovo), I realized it uses "kosher gelatin". I looked at the other questions on kosher gelatin, and there wasn't much agreement as to what the term meant. Apparently, sometimes it means it's not made from animals, and other times it doesn't. ??? Does anyone know what Tillamook derives their kosher gelatin from? Do I need to get a new favorite brand of yogurt??

  • Is there certain vegetables that chickens can't eat?

I have a couple of hens that free-range in my backyard. They are for egg-laying only, not for meat. I'm curious if there are any vegetables that they should not eat. I am a vegetarian, so I'm thinking I could probably give them just about anything that I eat... but I know certain things like onions, coffee, etc. are bad for cats & dogs... just not sure if the same applies to chickens. Does anyone know, or know of websites with great info on things chickens can eat (other than the obvious layer feed, etc)? Obviously their main source of food is layer feed, I just wanted to supplement their free-range options with the lousy weather we've had lately. Thanks!

  • Any other veggies SICK of these freakin' trolls???

Okay... so I come on here this morning and see ALL these lovely posts like "meat is tasty murder" and "what's the best way to kill an animal slowly", etc. I'm getting really sick of it.

SOOOO.... I was thinking. How 'bout if all of us actual vegetarians and vegans just STOP RESPONDING to these morons? Half the time these harrassing, obnoxious and downright sickening posts get more responses than the serious "veggie to veggie" questions do! Clearly it just gets these morons off, getting all us veggies riled up.

So flag 'em if you want to... but DONT respond to 'em. Once they get a few violation notices from yahoo AND don't get the pleasure of pissing us all off... maybe they'll go find something better to do with themselves.

Oh... and just so my question is a question... how 'bout this: WHAT is the best way to get the morons off our board? Anybody have any other ideas???

  • What is good chicken feed? And calcium???

I have two laying hens... and since I'm new at raising chickens, I thought I'd ask about proper feed for them. I feed my cats & dogs extremely high end food (Canidae, Felidae) as I know that typical commercial food has all sorts of nasty stuff in it. I would assume the same applies to chicken feed. What do I look for to ensure my hens are getting the best quality diet? Is corn okay as the first ingredient? Is there a better source of calcium than oyster shell?? Thanks!

  • Can they go after me again? 10 yrs after the fact???

11 yrs ago my ex and I bought a mobile home. A year later, we divorced. He was awarded the house and any future debt associated with it in both the temporary and later the permanent decrees. He quickly let the house foreclose (without me even knowing about it!!). For the next 7 years, collection agencies called me trying to collect. They never got any money, and about 3 years ago, it finally dropped off my credit report. A few days ago... I got a call. It was the collection agency again!! Can they start this all over again even though it's been so long and it's already dropped off my credit score once?? I live in Washington state. If anyone knows, I'd be very grateful!
