  • Is there a provision in the NEC for the min distance of a cooling tower to an electric substation of 13.8KV?

An existing electric power substation of 13.8KV, 5MVA capacity has a nearby cross flow cooling tower with a capacity of about 150 GPM. This cooling tower is about 25meters away from the electric power substation. There is a plan to replace this cooling tower but the available space is now only 6 meters away from the said electric power substation. Is there any provision in NEC or NFPA code setting the minimum distance of a cooling tower to an electric power substation? If the space is the only available place, is there anything that is allowed by code to protect any possible flooding of the substation, or is it totally not allowed?

  • If the uric acid is low, what could be the cause of chronic pain in the ankle? ?

There is no other cause known, no accident, no swelling of the ankle, etc. The person is 50 years old, weighing 84 kg and height of 168 cm.

No arthritis; uric acid is normal but near the upper limit. It is already one month since the pain was felt. Could it be due to some food or what? Thank you in advance for your answers.

  • How is the process of talking loud without shouting?

I know of somebody who is a cancer survivor. He is formerly a lecturer and talked loud almost everytime when he used to lecture before. Without clear cause he suffered from a cancer of the throat affecting his vocal cord. Luckily he survived the surgery and cobalt treatment. This time, however, he could hardly talk loud enough to be heard. His speech even after several sessions of therapy is very faint and like a whisper. The question is how to help him to revive his voice. He is now out of work for 4 years.

  • When is the appropriate time to criticize your employer policies during employment or after resigning?

If you are trapped working in a company that changed many good practices to adverse ones, when is the right time to complain?

Sometimes, I read in some books or people saying that if you have complaints or anything against your employer's policies you have to resign or leave the company first because that is showing no loyalty to your employer.

  • What are the possible causes of brain blood clot and the corresponding symptoms?

My friend said that sometimes whenever he is very busy especially when is trying to beat his work deadline he feels that an area at his lower head portion, at the left side, at the back & just about 1 - 2 inches above the uppermost portion of his neck feels very warm to a slight hot. He is wondering what could be the reason for that.

He is working also with computers and because he has double vision lens eyeglasses (upper one for nearsighted & lower one for reading) he is always tilting up his head for a better focus in his reading.

Now for about a month, he feels as if he has a stiff neck though not as painfull. He is afraid and thinking he has sort of brain blood clot although the doctor said it could only be due to fatigue and routine sleep head position.

Please give your medical comments. What could these be ---blood clotting? Are the two cases related? What medication or therapy can possibly eliminate the symptom of feeling like a stiff neck?

  • Can someone give his / her opinion about the overtime rate in various countries on rest day or holidays?

Normally, the overtime rate in many countries during regular days is 150% and during rest days & holidays also 150% but in some countries the overtime rate during rest days and holidays is 200%, sometimes even more depending on the management in order to encourage people to work overtime even if the labor law is fixing it at a lower rate. In case higher overtime rate is already being practiced for a long time, is it still legal to suddenly change to labor law rate just by issuing a memo?

  • What is best to improve memory and keep looking younger at 40's and above?

When a person is in the late 40's and if he/she has been taking good care of oneself, he/she may look just like about in late 20's but once he/she reaches late 50's the difference will show that he/she is getting old either through his/her memory or by his/her looks. If there are ways to improve both the memory and looks, the person could even look younger even at 60's, looking just at 30's. How to do this? What exercise, medication, habits, sleep, relaxation, work, etc.

When you wash your face or take a bath, there are certain brand of soaps which leave a slimy feeling in the skin which takes more time and water to remove. Is this really part of the soap product design to give protection to the skin or this slimy feeling needs to be removed so that the skin is not damaged?

  • Sometimes authors used Calculus or Laplace Transform in Eng manuscripts to explain his topic, whys it needed?

When I read an engineering or technical manuscript from various published periodicals, sometimes I see high level mathematics like Calculus (differential or integral) or Laplace Transform being injected in the explanation which I find hard to follow, usually boring me and to discontinue reading. What do you think really is the purpose of the author for doing so? Is it not enough to just give the explanation in plain technical language which is easily understandable? Or, is it something of a requirement for an scholarly work? Normally, I skip those mathematics but I wonder how effective it is for others to see at the middle of the paper. I am thinking that the proof or derivation of his findings should not be mixed with the rhetorics and instead be treated separately at the end of the manuscript for the specialists who want to check more in detail his proof.

  • Why is it common that when it's time to wake up that you like it most to sleep more?

Sometimes when it is already wake up time in the morning for school, work or whatever routine committment you have for the day, you feel like staying more in the bed unless, of course, you do not want to be late. You then have to use the snooze of your alarm clock several times to postpone your wake up time.
