  • Can Employers ignore scheduled hours and send home an employee day after day?

My son is working part-time at a new fast food restaurant in our area. In the past 3 weeks, although he was on the schedule, he has gone to work and been sent home immediately 3 times, has had his supervisor call 2 times to ask he not come in (over scheduling was the excuse), and most recently he called for his schedule and was told he was "on call." To me it sounds as if he's being asked to quit, but he won't. He's good at his job and well liked by the other employees. There has been no hint from his supervisors/managers that his job was in jeopardy. He's been there since it opened (4 months). Other than poor performance, has an employer the right to repeatedly ask the same employee to not work even when scheduled?

  • Has anyone else noticed a curious coincidence between the flood of "green" programming and high gas prices?

Earth Day has been around for 30+ years. Alternatives to fossil fuel have been invented then shot down by government & big business. Suddenly they're lauded again as the next great step forward for mankind! I don't get it! Haven't we heard about global warming for decades? Haven't those wacky "hippies" been using natural fibers, compost heaps, & even converted their deisel vehicles to operate on vegetable oil from the local fast food joint or solar panels on the roofs of their streamlined vehicles? THIS IS NOT NEW! Yet the media is acting as if this were amazing, incredibly simple and a person is a fool & inhumane if we don't each find SOME way to reduce our personal "footprint" on our planet! We all know it takes months to plan and film a television show. There was even a writers strike recently. So how is it if NO ONE predicted the rise in fuel oil, that reality shows, whole channels & "special" episodes of our favorite TV shows are suddenly "going green" just as prices rise?

  • Why is it that the keypad on a telephone is opposite that of a calculator?

I work with a calculator and telephone all day and often misdial because my brain is used to the numbers laid out on the calculator. Just curious as to whose brain-child it was to invert the numbers. Were they afraid we'd be calculating phone numbers or phoning pi? Were interchangeable parts a concern? Perhaps they were just concerned someone may invent a calculating telephone and use up all the rolled paper for messages. I just feel office life might be a smidge less complicated if the keypads were the same.
