  • How long does it take for corticosteroid behavioural side effects to appear?

My 10 month old male is on 5mg prednisolone twice a day. He's been on it since Wednesday and has developed mood changes. He's growled at people twice when moved, puts his hackles up much more readily and freezes when interacting with dogs he would normally be happy with. And tonight he bit one of the other dogs.

Is this just coincidence, or is it likely to be to do with the medication?

  • Neospora and muscle disorder opinions?

My ten month old pup is a poorly little one, and I really wanted to see what everyone thinks they would do in my situation.

At the moment he presents with a very odd gait (swaying and often sideways), refuses to run very fast, and has poor muscle tone. He is intolerant to exercise and in constant pain. Of course, given that he is a staffie x, he wants to be on the go all the time.

For the time being I'm trying to balance his mental health with his physical health, but it's pretty much impossible to satisfy both.

The two diagnoses on the table are neospora and some kind of muscle disorder.

The neospora would involve treatment with three very strong antibiotics, which may or may not work.

The muscle condition would involve long term treatment with corticosteroids, again with no guarantees. Having said this, I don't think I would go ahead with this, as he would have to have a fairly quiet lifestyle, something that just isn't viable for him.

My two main questions are, have any of you had experience with side effects of strong antibiotics or corticosteroids?

And also, how long should I give him before I call it a day?

Any other comments are welcome, thankyou.

  • Parasite that causes low protein levels?

Today my vet told me of a possible diagnosis for my puppy, and of course I've forgotten what it was. So, does anyone know of a parasite that causes bloodwork to come back with low protein levels? It is usually seen in dogs that have eaten raw meat.

His symptoms are muscle tremors, pain, lack of muscle, and exercise intolerance.

He does have other symptoms, but we're still not sure if they're just behavioural issues or to do with whatever he has.

  • Dog does not seem to feel pain?

I have had my (roughly) 9 month old, castrated male puppy for three months now, before this he was a stray in a large city. He has always been boisterous and excitable, but what worries me is that he doesn't seem to have any fear at all.

When he was digging at a piece of flyball equipment, he unlatched it and it fell on him. He didn't even flinch. Out of curiosity, I pressed down on it, and nothing.

I have also tried shaking a bottle of stones at him to shock him away from jumping up, and again, he just didn't even notice the various noises I have used on him.

Just yesterday he has started frantically tracking scents, a behaviour he has never shown interest in before.

In addition to these behavioural issues, he urinates and drinks more often than I would consider normal, and his urine is often very pale. His legs also shake alot of the time, usually when laying down or sitting.
