  • What are these spots on my hollyhocks?

My hollyhocks have dozens (maybe hundreds) of tiny orange/bronze colored spots/dots on the top of the leaves. The underside has little "bubbles" or raised area under each spot that's on the top. Is that clear as mud?

  • Is it illegal to propagate a plant you bought?

I'm not selling them I just want a few more for my yard.

While I was at a nursery today I couldn't find a plant that I wanted; an employee there told me it was very hard to find. I then said something about propgating another one and the owner of the nursery almost flipped her lid and told me "all plants are patented and it's illegal to propagate them unless you have a license to do so".

Something about that didn't sit right with me so I'm wondering if that's true. I'm sure you can patent a name, but can you patent a plant?
