I hang around in the Books and Authors section mostly.

  • Starting a story with once upon a time?

I'm writing a story that takes place no later than the 1920's and I want it to have a bit of a fairy-tale feel about it. I feel like "once upon a time" invokes the feel of a fairy-tale and is a charming way to open a story.

    What do you think?

  • Binding your stomach during pregnancy?

I just saw a movie where the pregnant main character bound her stomach to hide she was pregnant. She looked to be 4 or 5 months along at least and she was binding it pretty tightly so it really got me to wondering is that even possible? Wouldn't that hurt or kill the baby?

  • Writing resources for Science Fiction?

I write primarily Fantasy but recently I began a story based in sci-fi. I need some resources to help me with the science part. I'd like links to websites that give advice on building future science/societies, or the titles of books. Any advice is welcome as well.

  • What's the name of this song?

What am I supposed to do with this

There’s a hole where nothing can exist

I always thought that I was free

Now there’s nothing left that’s me

What am I supposed to do with this

There’s a hole where nothing can exist

I always thought that I was free

Now there’s nothing left that’s me

What am I supposed to do with you

Empty words that don’t ring true

I always thought that you were free

Now there’s nothing left for me

What am I supposed to do with this

There’s a hole where nothing can exist

What am I supposed to do with this

There’s a hole where nothing can exist

What am I supposed to do with this

There’s a hole where nothing can exist

What am I supposed to do with this

There’s a hole where nothing can exist

Then there sounds like there's someone talking at the end of the song but I can't understand any of it. I have the song on my computer but I don't have any details for it or even remember when I got it or where it came from.

  • I'm need a list of fighting moves preferably take-down or one hit moves?

I'm writing a story and the main character (female) was an illegal fighter before the story began. I have an idea of how she fought but I don't have a clue how to describe the moves or what they are actually called.

I've looked online for move lists but I keep coming up with academies or places to buy tickets. If you could list moves and what they are or point me to a good resource it'd be really helpful.

  • Name of three short stories in the same collected volume or the volume name?

I read a collection of short scifi stories in Highschool and I can't remember the names or the collection. I may not be remembering the stories quite correctly but I'm pretty sure

    1) A man is on Mars exploring. The nights are cold and a Bird is following him. He finds an ancient civilization that he thinks is abandoned but it turns out it isn't. I think the bird was trying to help him.

    2) Two races of aliens live in the same habitat. One is a type of highly intelligent three-legged horse thing and the other is a smaller creature that isn't as wise but has opposable thumbs. They are at battle over limited resources. The more intelligent aliens are at an advantage in battle but eventually the two species work together to make a raft in order to search out more resources.

    3) There was a woman on a planet and she had a necklace. She lost the necklace and later space men land on the planet and they take her into space to see the necklace. (this is the one that I remember the least about)

  • My ear piercings seem to be continually infected?

I got my ears pierced last year at Claire's and I clean them daily but sometimes they still get infected. I also use a oil for my my dry scalp three times a week and it causes my piercings to swell to a point that I can't even get an earring in.

I've been thinking about going to a professional piercer and getting the piercings redone. As I understand they use a hollow needle to actually remove part of the ear. Should that help with the infection/swelling? Do I need to let my ears close before I can have them repierced or can they go over the previous one?

  • I'm learning to play the piano, have a couple questions?

In school I played the violin and the flute. A year ago my cousin's downsized and they gave me a piano so I finally decided to teach myself to play, now I have a couple questions.

    1) When should I become concerned with tempo? At the moment I'm still doing well to find the notes without staring at the keys a full minute between each note.

    2) Would a metronome help or hinder learning? My violin instructor seemed to think metronomes were the downfall of civilization and my flute instructor thought they were the greatest.

    3) Can I play violin or flute music on the piano? I only have a few sheets of piano music but I have folders and folders left over from flute and violin.

I have no idea if this is the right place for this question. If it's not and someone could direct me, thank you.

  • Mythical creatures associated with winter/Christmas?

I'm working on a story and trying to decide on what mythical creature will attack the main character. I think the time the attack happens is going to be late November/early December. All I can find are ghost stories and nice creatures, which is not helpful.

I could make up a creature but as of asking this I haven't actually deviated from mythology yet and it seems weird to make up only one creature in the universe, particularly when it's a character that I don't think is going to appear again.

  • Scene where superman's mom tells him she doesn't want him to be like Batman?

I don't remember if it's in a cartoon or a comic but I remember a scene between Clark and Martha where she tells something about talking to the press or something because she doesn't want him to be like the "weirdo" in Gotham. I don't remember it exactly but it's something along those lines.

  • Advice reinventing the seven Dwarves?

I don't go to the movies very often so I rented Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror Mirror last night and watched them back to back.

Now, I want to write my own revised Snow White for fun, but the seven dwarves are presenting quite a challenge. I was thinking I might go with seven outcasts of different races. I have at the moment three dwarves, one elf, and a human. So I need two more characters if I go that route, they'd probably be human since they live in a mostly human region...

My other idea would be to keep seven dwarves, or to cut down the number in order to focus more on characterizing.

    Any thoughts?

  • I feel less imaginative when I write than I used to?

Is it because I'm getting older and more jaded or is it because I can recognize a bad idea now?

I've wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember so when I feel like I'm not as imaginative as I used to be it really bothers me. I'm still writing, still coming up with ideas, but they just don't feel as grand or new as they did five years ago.

  • Help naming a bicycle part?

I can remember when I was a kid I'd stand on a bar that went through the back tire on my friends bike. What is that bar called, and are they even on bikes anymore?

  • How do you feel about Prologues?

I've heard some people really complain about prologues so I'm taking a pole, do you like them or hate them?

Second question, how do you feel about prologues that are not related to the main story? In other words, prologues that take place before the story proper with unrelated characters.

  • young avengers comic book chronology help?

I'm new to comic books (I normally just watch the cartoon adaptations) and started reading the young avengers since I liked young justice and I wanted to get into Marvel stuff. I read the first twelve issues in the "main series" and now I'm a little lost.

I started reading the civil war-cross-over with the runaways but I feel like I missed something. Do the characters merge into the regular avengers or something? At what point does that happen? (I haven't read any of the Avengers, mainly because I don't like justice league as much as young justice or teen titans so I figured it'd probably be about the same with the avengers.)

  • Static Shock comic books?

I'm a big fan of Static and I'd like to buy the comics (original run and the new 52), but I don't know how many issues were released or if they were ever released as compilations (Which I would prefer). I'm having a little trouble tracking down the information so if anyone knows or can point me to where I can find the information I'd be grateful.

  • How do you decide if a story has potential?

I haven't been able to write for a while and I feel like if I could finish something that I'd feel better and be able to get back into the swing of things. I have a lot of stories I've started but I can't decide which ones I'm most likely to have enough ideas and motivation to finish. They're all in about the same stage of completion and I've got about the same level of interest in all of them.

  • Survey: how do you feel about cliches?

I'm a firm believer that not all cliches are bad, it depends on the writing. That said, there are some that are worse than the others, so what cliches do you think are irredeemable, infuriating, or just plain awful.

The one that drives me batty is royalty with amnesia. That useless and annoying kid that tags along for the entire story then gets hit on the head in the last chapter and saves everyone by remembering he/she is a king/queen/princess/prince.

  • Advice on writing outside your comfort zone?

I don't normally write stories that revolve around a romance so I'm a bit lost. I don't even read romance so I don't know where to look for inspiration, but I came up with an idea for a couple that I really like.

So, does anyone have some tips on writing outside of what you're used to. Also, I'd appreciate any recommendation of good romance stories (preferably teen books, I'm not a big fan of explicit books.)
