  • Can I / should I declare myself an independent?

    I'm currently 17 and recently inherited some money from my great aunt. My parents' income sits just above the line of low income, and my pell grant went away after I inherited the funds. My parents are making me pay for everything- tuition, books, my plane ticket, etc. and I have been working part time jobs since my junior year. (My freshman and sophomore years I was using my birthday money for lunch money, I'm tired of it.) I don't even plan on returning home that often. Can I qualify as an independent, and would that have much of an effect? [My college does meet 100% of demonstrated need.]

  • What smart phone is right for me ? [iphone vs droid, other suggestions?]?

    I'm a college student getting ready to go off to school 900 miles away. I plan on using my smartphone for pretty basic actions... Texting, pics, scheduling, facebook, etc. as well as more complex actions like GPS. (I've never lived on the East Coast before, it would be nice to have something really reliable in this respect.)

    So what it all comes down to for me: Reliability, coverage, battery life, and cost long term. [Any info on free texting apps / internet costs?]

    I recently graduated high school and have been unemployed since March, when I got sick. I'm better now but am desperate for cash, I don't have mommy and daddy to pay for my college. The past two interviews I had, one of the immediate questions was "where are you going to college?" and when I mentioned that I was going away, the interviews abruptly ended.   • Questions about tattoos- one week short of 18th birthday?

    I move into my dorm on the East Coast on August 31, & I'm anticipating 3-4 days to get there. If I go to a tattoo shop and explain that I'm one week short of my birthday and parents don't care (they would have signed for it if the IL law was still in place), are they likely to do the tat? I wouldn't mind waiting a little while longer, but my parents are relocating from Chicago & I might not be back in the actual city for awhile...

  • Question about attendance and high school graduation? [CPS]?

    I currently attend a Chicago Public School magnet high school. I have all As and Bs, minus a C in calc. Despite this, I have horrible attendance... I was skipping a lot at the beginning of senior year, then got sick and missed about 3 weeks of school. I only have 2 or 3 unexcused absences, though I have 32 absences total. Will I run into any problems getting my diploma? My GPA is a 3.3 unweighted / 4.4 weighted.

    In addition, my finals are the last week of May, though I don't graduate until June 16. I have a job lined up for summer and as one of the kids not going to prom, senior luncheon, or even the graduation ceremony, my family is okay with me not attending the last few days. If they call me in, will I be okay?

  • High school senior- can/should I get CNA certified before college?

    I'm currently a high school senior at a prestigious school in Chicago, and I want to enter the medical field as either a higher level nurse or doctor. I've had retail jobs in the past, but lately I've been unable to find a job due to the economy. Volunteering is a big passion of mine, and I have much experience with both people and animals. I've been thinking about taking classes at a city college to become a CNA, which may help me gain employment over the summer / in college? Is this a smart move or are they likely to not employ me due to my age? (I'm 17 and won't turn 18 until my first year of college.) I've looked into dining aid, etc. jobs, but those are also hard to come by or require some sort of prereq that I just don't have. (Though I am taking culinary programs that will give me a sanitation certificate through an outside program.)

  • To what extent should campus & town/city life be a factor in picking a college?

    I've lived in Chicago my whole life, and I had a VERY unpleasant high school experience. [Though the school was #1 in the state, there were so many problems with cliques and nerdy kids partying to be cool that I wound up hanging out at my best friends' regular schools and colleges.] I'm really trying not to have the same thing happen again, and with A-B grades+ high ACT & SAT scores I'm trying to find a really good liberal arts college or university that I will:

    a. Get a lot of money from.

    b. Help me gain admission to a really good grad school.

    Lately, I've been looking at Beloit College, though I'm a bit hesitant due to the complete lack of a town & diversity haha. I really like the college & class sizes, but does that really win out in the end?

  • How do colleges react to students with high test scores, relatively lower GPAs?

    Given few other details, what are some general rules of thumb? My school is in the top 100 in the nation, and my ACT and SAT scores are high [34 when I took it as a sophomore, 97th percentile on the PSAT- waiting on the SAT score], but my GPA is relatively low [3.3 unweighted, 4.3 weighted]. Is it worth taking summer classes that would lower the weighted GPA and raise the unweighted one?

    I currently have shoulder-length choppy-cut hair. Sometimes it's straight, where the cut appears drastic; most of the time, it's naturally very wavy. My skin tone is very fair.
