There are two ways we can look at the age of political revolutions that began about 1770.

First, the glass is half full: The American and French Revolutions (as well as the Haitian and Latin American Revolutions) represent a great leap forward in humanity's conception of freedom and basic human dignity.

Second, the glass is half empty: The Revolutions were by and for white men with property. "Human rights" and "freedom" meant rights and freedom for them. The revolutions meant nothing for women, for people of color, or for the poor.

Today, we probably would focus on the half empty glass, possibly because we are still dealing with problems related to racism and poverty, while the triumph of representative government and the concept of natural rights are more or less taken for granted. What do you think? Half full or half empty?
