  • Bird mites?

Hi, I have a female Chinese Painted (Button) Quail who appears to be itchy. She has been spending more and more time lately itching herself and rolling around in her cage litter... So I'm wondering if she could have mites or something else like lice or fleas?

I found these 3 products on the Petsmart website and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on which would be best, and also, since she's in an aquarium with a cloth roof, and she's in my bedroom, could the chemicals in these products be harmful to her or me?

  • Green Eggs & Ham??

My Quail either thinks she the Easter Quail, or she's been reading too much Dr. Seuss. She layed a completely GREEN egg today!! :)

Her eggs have always been brown with dark spots, but today it's green. Is she just trying to express her artistic side, or could there be something wrong with her?

Has anyone else's bird layed any strangely colored "Easter" eggs?

  • Why is my Quail so itchy?

I have a female Chinese Painted (Button) Quail and recently I've noticed that she sometimes runs around her cage and does tiny hops like something is biting or tickling her, and then she starts itching her chest and back with her beak.

Could she have fleas? My apartment is on the 11th floor and there's no dogs or cats here, so I don't know how she could get them?

Since summer finally ended and the air is getting drier, could it also be dry skin that's making her itch? or what about some type of skin rash or allergy?

She isn't itching all the time, but I've noticed her doing that a few times this weekend.

How can I tell what's causing it so I can use the right treatment?

  • Why do birds eat their own sh!t?

Why do birds eat their own sh!t? And how can they not get extremely sick from eating it?

Even though my Quail has plenty of seeds, fruit pellets, and gets 4 worms a day, I still see her taking a dump and then eating it right afterwards. She actually looks like she enjoys it more than her real food!

Even though I've never tasted birdshit before, I'm pretty damned sure it couldn't tasted better than real food. So what's up with her 'food recycling' fetish?

  • How do I stop my Quail from laying eggs?

Hi, I have a female Button (Chinese Pained?) Quail who is laying an egg almost every day. Since this will dramatically shorten her life span, I'd like to get her to lay the fewest number of eggs possible.

I've read that reducing their light to < 10 hours per day should reduce the number of eggs produced, but this doesn't appear to be working.

Does anyone have any other ideas?
