I hear through the grapevine that my 18 year old daughter is engaged. How do I respond when she tells me?
My daughter has various emotional/mental problems, which she, of course, does not acknowledge. She dropped out of high school two months ago after failing junior year for the second time. Weeks later she moved out and is mooching off a family that lives on food stamps. So with an 10th grade education and a job as a restaurant hostess that she hasn't even started yet, I hear she's engaged to a guy she's known about three weeks. She's asked to have breakfast on Saturday, and I anticipate that she's going to "spring" this on me then.
It's quite heartbreaking. She doesn't understand why anybody would be upset just because she wants to be "independant." How do I get through this breakfast?
My plan is to nod, say ok, and wish her well. I won't have anything to do with the marriage ceremony, though I have no objection to interacting with her and her fiance before and, if it comes to that, after the function. Mostly my fingers are crossed and I'm waiting for the wind to change.
