  • If you were to pick 1 image...what would it be?

Alright. So I'm doing a project and just a simple stupid part of this assignment is to put a photo that represents this year..as current events go.

If you were to pick one image from any website...to envelop this year in politics, government, current events...which image would it be?

    URLS appreciated.

    Thank you!

  • How to start writing an essay?

Okay, so, I have to start writing this paper...It's due on 9/3/08 (at least the 1st draft is due then).

Anyway, the assignment is to take an average word that is misunderstood and write the whole paper about the definition of that word.

The word I chose is "courage". I don't know how to start the paper [always the hardest part for me!]

This is the book's example about wisdom:

    What is Wisdom?

"Wise guy." "Wisecrack." "Wise up." What does the word wise mean in all these expressions? Who is wise, and what is wisdom? A dictionary might define wisdom as "knowledge of what is right, true and lasting However, none of these expressions has much to do with those qualities. On the contrary, they seem to have more to do with being sarcastic and street smart than being honest and knowledgeable. This contradiction leads me to the conclusion that wisdom is a type of knowledge that is neither widely recognized nor widely practiced.

I need to come up with something clever like that only for courage..

Any ideas on how to get me started?

    Thank You!!!!

  • What does government mean to ?

With the elections going on this year, the Iraq war, gas increase prices, etc. I was wondering what you thought of the government...or what it IS to you.

When you hear the word government, what do you think of?

It could be good or bad, small or large.

And I guess also...how does the government affect you and your daily life?

    Just pondering about these questions.

  • How to write a conclusion paragraph?

Slavery has been a part of our history for hundreds of years. Eventually abolitionist movements helped outlaw slavery, but still today it is a controversial topic in society. Gary Collison, who is a Caucasian English professor at Pennsylvania State University, wrote the novel Shadrach Minkins: From Fugitive Slave to Citizen. He wrote this book to voice the truth about hardships of slavery and discrimination. Collison follows Minkins throughout the continent as he is a slave in Norfolk, VA, a fugitive in Boston, and a free black man in Montreal. Collison does an acceptable job of portraying the lives of slaves along with the difficulties and discriminations they would have to overcome throughout their lives.

Collison’s novel starts out describing the well known aspects of a slave. This includes how they were restricted in movements, decisions, and forced to do labor. He provides a considerable amount of information about Minkins, seeing that there are few records about him. He compares and contrasts other slaves experiences to what might have happened to Minkins. Throughout his life, Shadrach was passed from owner to owner in his earlier years, which Collison says will make slaves “have the desire to run for freedom.” Minkins did not work in the fields but he worked in a very nice home for Mr. Debree. His slaves were allowed to go out occasionally but they had to be back at the time the bell had rung. Since they were living in Norfolk, VA, which is right next to a sea port, many slaves often had a craving for independence. Most slaves hid on the boats to get a “ride to freedom” to the North. Again the history of Shadrach is not solid but he was said to be one of these men and he boarded a boat that was headed for Boston, MA. Once he arrived he had received help from other run-away slaves. He later gets a job as a waiter at a very fine restaurant, and he makes a decent salary. However the north was still racist, which did not make things easy for Minkins.

This book is an excellent one if one is looking for an informational read. It explains many aspects of why things were in history as they were. It explains for example the Fugitive Slave Laws, the Turner Revolt, and many other laws and acts with which were directly tied to slavery. Collison makes a lot of claims about the life of Shadrach Minkins’ story yet he has historical evidence to support his claims. This is not simply a story as to what happened in his life but it is an analysis of what occurred. Although the story is not told from the fugitive himself which does detract from the historical value it is interesting to see from a third party’s perspective. This is a story of complete triumph of a man who fought against slavery his whole life. He did not experience feelings of hatred from others for a few weeks; it was for his entire existence. Shadrach had this surrounding him, inescapable, until the times had changed, until the people had changed. However the only downfall of this novel is the book feels incomplete in certain areas.

Although getting the view of the fugitive would have been nice it is not completely necessary. In some cases the personal perspective may also detract from the historical value and may be a slight deterrent in the way one reads the book. Some novels are very detailed and gruesome and only focus on the beatings and torturous parts of slavery. Collison’s novel did not mention the abusive part as much as other novels did which may bias the reader in one way or another. The book about Shadrach focused on his life as a whole; not just the “stripes” he got that day. Collison’s novel focuses on how Minkins escaped from slavery and how he was going to better his life and learn from the experiences that he had encountered. Collison’s novel also focuses on many more people than just Minkins which gives it an array of opinion and facts

***************Okay***** I need some help!! This is the rough draft of my Book review comparing all three books. Now all I need is help starting a conclusion. Maybe just the beginning and ending sentence of the conclusion would do me good. That and the intro are the hardest parts for me….I don’t just want to say In conclusion, slavery was bad. That’s just dumb.

Read the essay if you want, but its kind of long and boring. I just need to know how to write a good conclusion…I’d really appreciate a starting/ending sentence.

    Please no web links.

    Thanks a ton!!!!

  • How to start a paper?

I have to do a book review comparing 3 novels that I have read. They all have to do with the topic of slavery, yet I just need some help on getting started! Writing the first paragraph is always the hardest for me.

I'm supposed to include a definition of slavery and as to why my 3rd book I've read outshines the other one...and what the others lack, etc.

I don't just want to start out my paper as "The definition of slavery is _asjdfkjasldf" because that's really elementary. I'm trying to think of a more adult way to say it but I just can't come up with anything

(PS I'M NOT ASKING FOR A WHOLE PARAGRAPH OR FOR YOU TO WRITE MY ESSAY. I'M SIMPLY ASKING FOR A SENTENCE STARTER OR SOMETHING. THANKS!!!!)

    Thanks a ton!!!

  • Whats a good book to read?

I need a book for my topic of Slavery. My Professor gave me the idea of doing a book about "Sex Slavery"

And I need a NONFICTION book to read. I don't really think there is a page requirement but it can't be ridiculously short. But not ridiculously long either. (Max 300 pages?) I have to read it pretty quickly.

Anyway, I know Lisa Ling did a documentary on Oprah about Sex Slavery and I was just wondering if there were any good NONFICTION books about this topic?

    Thanks for your help!

  • WiFi Internet Connections??

Okay. So. Guys. I've asked about this before and I'm still really confused about this Wi-Fi stuff. I'm usu. not a computer illiterate person, but this is just baffling my mind. I already have Cox Communications Internet. I have a router and a modem...and someone on a review thing of the Ipod Touch said we need a wireless router. Now, if I get a wireless router...do I still need to have Cox..or does it replace it?

And how do I set it up. Do I just put it in a seperate room from the Cox set up and then that room automatically gets internet..or how does it work?

someone please explain this in detail! or no points for you.

    thank you very very much.

    i really appreciate you guys.

  • Ender's Shadow?

I'm reading Ender's Shadow right now, and I'm almost 1/2 way done with it and I absolutely love this book.

    It's so cool, and interesting!

We have an assignment coming up though, that has to do with futuristic things...and I haven't really seen all that many.

The spaceship is loaded with things, but alot of them have been invented already.

Such as the palm readers, we already have fingerprint identification technology. And also the hologram desks...that has been thought of before. They're not real, but still.

Is there stuff later on in the book that is a futuristic invention that we do not have currently?

    That's my question.

    Thank you in advance! =]
