  • Is my mercury level too high?

After eating a can of albacore tuna every day for 9 months, I started experiencing a host of unexplained, undiagnosed illnesses and symptoms. My doctor tested me for mercury poisoning and found my levels were five times above normal. But she said that probably okay, and not a case of mercury poisoning. Is five times higher than normal really okay?

  • Where can I get my hair tested for mercury poisoning in Taiwan?

I tried Chang Gung hospital today, but they provide only urine testing - which is only suitable for inorganic metal poisoning. However, I'm experiencing a host of serious health issues (eg. numbness in hands, fainting, bleeding, tinnitus, swollen joints, etc.) after eating very large amounts of tuna (full of organic mercury) over a very long time. Desperate for help. Many thanks in advance.

  • Is Vancouver a safe place to live?

My family and I are going to return to Canada in the near future, after a lengthy stay abroad, and we are debating where to live. I've spent a little time there 10 years ago, and it's a great city in many ways. But the issue of gang wars and other crimes has us thinking that maybe Calgary or another city might be a better choice. What do you think?

  • Are raised beds just too dangerous for toddlers?

My wife and I co-sleep with our 1-year-old boy. We removed one side of his crib and placed it between our bed and the wall. During his nap times we surround the open space near his crib with pillows. However, more than once he's fallen off the bed after he's woken up (thankfully, he was OK both times).

But, obviously, this approach isn't working. He can stand up now (while holding furniture), so he's getting too old to sleep alone in a crib. And beds for toddlers are still a foot or so off the ground ... dangerous if he just plonked over the edge, head fiirst?

All I can think of is for him to sleep on a mattress on the floor - in a baby-proofed room - (and my wife and I as well, while co-sleeping) until he's old enough to understand the danger of falling from a height.

Does this approach - mattress on the floor - seem reasonable?

    Thanks!

  • If the rate of expansion of the universe is constantly accelerating...?

... will the rate of expansion continue indefinitely to the point where one day the speed of retreating galaxies matches the speed of light? Or will the universe one day be law-abiding and slow down in order to stay under the speed limit of light?

  • Do you ever dream that you have the ability to fly?

About once a month or so I dream that I can fly or levitate. The "feeling" of flying seems very real, and when I wake up to discover I'm gravity-bound I'm very disappointed. I'm curious how common dreams like this are. (And, I wonder if they have been interpreted in any way...).

  • Help! Baby and vaccine fever?

Our 6-month-old got a vaccine injection this morning, and now his temperature is 38 C. The nurse gave us oral medication to reduce fever, but he refuses to accept it because of the taste (even watered down). He's weak, and crying (when he awakes) We're taking his temp every 20 minutes and monitoring his condition....

Should we bring him to the emergency room or is there anything we can do at home?

Worried, stressed, and one foot already out the door if his temp goes any higher.

    Thanks!

  • Does our baby have a medical or an emotional problem ... or is this normal?

Our baby is almost 7 months old and several times throughout the day (but usually in the evenings) he will roll over on his tummy and begin to shout / grunt / whimper and turn red and his body will get stiff for a few moments. Then sometimes he'll stop and smile at us. Or (more often than not) he'll start crying really loudly - he'll stop, and calm down, if we pick him up. This behavior only started recently.

His bowel movements are OK. Maybe he's expressing teething pain? This is our first baby, ...and we live overseas in a small town, so I'm not sure if our baby's doctor will be of much help when we mention it to him later this week. Is this "normal" behavior for a baby? Has anyone experienced similar behavior with their baby? Many thanks.

  • Should we limit the lengths of morning and afternoon naps to encourage him to sleep at night?

Recently he's been taking very long naps (3+ hours) in the mornings and afternoons. He's also very difficult to get to sleep at night. My wife and I try to sleep (with our baby) at about 9 or 10 pm (but it takes about 2 hours for him to fall asleep).

In short, should we let him decide how much sleep he needs, when he needs it? Or should we try to "tire him out" a little with shorter naps?

    Thanks!

  • Is the baby bath temperature too hot?

My wife and I disagree about the baby bath temperature for our 4-month-old. One of us thinks that 40 degrees Celsius (we measured it) is too hot, while the other thinks it's OK. What do you think?

    Thanks!
