  • It s it safe to ask my ISP to open all ports?

I just found out through some testing that, even when plugged directly into my modem, all and I mean ALL of my ports are stealthed. Now I didn t even know what that meant until a few minutes ago but from what I understand, it is that they are pretty much closed. The only reason I m concerned about this is that I m an avid gamer and have terrible connections most of the time. Would stealthed ports even be a plausible cause of this?

If so, would it be unwise to request that they completely open all my ports and I let my router do the work or is this practice typical of ISP and better that relying on a router?

Also I have little security on my router right now as I have previously tried to remedy the horrible connections. If it is ok to ask for the ports to be opened, would I need to change the settings in this screenshot?http://imgur.com/LmDIyDQ

Thank you very much for the assistance and advice :)

  • Looking for a string generator that will fill my needs?

The closest one I have found to what I need is this one:

    http://www.generaterandomcodes.com/free-generate-r...

I have my setting on 2 letters and 6 numbers but the generated codes all have the letters at the beginning.

Does anyone know of one that will let me get something like 423A6B51 instead of BA534162?

    Thanks

  • Transfering data to another hard drive?

I got a new laptop today and would like to transfer all of my data from my old one to it. My question is, if I were to copy and paste everything on my C drive onto an external hard drive and then move it from that to the new laptop, would it work without issues. It seems like if I were to do that, it would cause driver and program issues, but thats why I'm asking. Would there be any compatibility issues or would it be fine? Thanks for and info provided.

  • Food Advice?

Im interested in getting into shape or atleast a little and Im looking for a diet plan that will work for me. I have little knowledge of food and dietary science so Im looking for foods that fit these criteria.

First off, I dont want to have to cook 5 different meals a day. It would be great if I could cook one meal in bulk that I could split up and would last me through the day. I'm not one to grow tired of eating the same food all day and its less time consuming.

Next, it would be amazing if it had a lot of fiber. I want it to be filling.

    Taste good (dislike seafood though)

Vitamins aren't a big deal as I currently take a supplement with close to 200% daily amounts. But I would like it to be under 2000 calories daily.

Keep it simple, no need for anything exotic.

If anything matches this description I would be quite surprised really. Afterall if it sounds to good to be true, it usually is.

Any suggestions that may exist would be appreciated as I can't find help on most weightloss websites, as they nearly expect you to be a chef at a five star restraunt.

I don't mean to have unrealistic expectations, but it's worth a shot to see if any such expectations can be filled.

  • Looking for games that fit this descrition.?

I've been kinda burnt out from playing my usual games which are mostly on console (mainly GTA V and other games) and am looking for a game that I can get into. The ideal game for me would have to have:

    - Little time requirement, as in I can sit down for maybe 30 mins and feel that I've really accomplished something. (Definitely not MMOs)

    - A larger picture, games where I have a long term goal that I can work towards. (CoD has always done it for me, working towards that next gun or prestige) Not something like LoL.

    - Captivating story or fun multiplayer.

    - Sandboxes are nice (GTA Online, never really Minecraft because didn't have any goals to set)

    - Cheap is always better :)

These are pretty much it. The next game I know of that fits these decently well is Evolve, hopefully it has a bigger picture, from what I've seen its kinda like LoL in that sense, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the suggestions. Hopefully can find something that interests me.

  • Is this a normal speed for what i m paying for?

I am paying 60 dollars a month for 4Mb down / 1 Mb up and on all the speed tests i have done over that last month i have been getting around 1 down / and .5 up. Is this something i should bring up with my ISP or is this normal. I know that ISPs claim that speeds are not guaranteed but should they really be this low? Thanks for the advice.

  • Strange DNS Problem?

Last night my router suddenly stopped providing working internet and after diagnosing with windows troubleshooter, xbox connection test, and even having chrome give the same answer, DNS seemed to be the problem.

Its is strange though, usually with a DNS problem, manually entering the servers will solve it, but here it seems that is not the case, which makes me think that it may not be DNS afterall. The problem occurs every 20 mins our so and lasts up to 5~10 mins, then returns to normal.

    Steps attempted to remedy:

Complete reset to factory settings of router

    Multiple power cycling

Manually entering DNS into local client.

I have not tried directly into modem but that will be my next step should you recommend it.

Any help from someone more experienced than myself would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is a Public IP Address?

I contacted my ISP about troubles opening ports and after deducing that it was not an issue on my end they claimed that they do not block ports and that my best bet to getting open ports was to obtain a Public IP Address. The tech said that my current address has NAT and a Public IP could fix doesn't (not sure if i understood correctly).

    (1.)

What exactly (in somewhat simple terms) is a Public IP?

    (2.)

Doesn't everyone have a Public IP? (Google "What is my IP address?")

    (3.)

Does this have any chance at solving Xbox Live connection issues?

From what i could figure so far. A Public IP is mainly for hosting websites so I would hope that ports would be open for others connecting to me, but what about me connecting to others on Xbox Live?

Been slowing teaching myself the basic workings of the internet for a while now so i know a decent amount but many websites i found on this topic do a poor job of explaining exactly what the use, purpose, or benefits are of it.

Any help and advice would be welcomed.

  • ISP suggests a Public IP Address??

I just contacted my ISP because when i plug directly into my modem, port checking programs still say ports are closed.

My ISP said that they don't block any ports and their only suggestion is to get a public IP. Is this really necessary to get open ports?

  • XGD3 and XGD2 File Size Question?

I have often found that many XGD3 game files are sometimes around 7.3 to 7.5GB. How can this be when XGD3 disks are supposed to only be 8.13GB. I've tried finding a solution to the phenomena. The file sizes for both XGD3 and XGD2 seem to vary so much that some XGD3 games are smaller than other XGD2s.

Also do these smaller files work correctly? Are they missing parts that cause the game to malfunction? Must I find ones that are exactly 7.29GB and 8.13GB?

Answers are much appreciated, as they seem to be rare on this topic.

  • DD-WRT Bandwidth Help!?

I recently upgraded to DD-WRT v24-sp2 firmware for my D-Link DIR-601 Router and I've loved it so far but I only have a few problems with it.

1st: QoS is nonfunctional. It just doesn't work. No idea why not although it seems to be a fairly common issue among other DD-WRT users also. I've been trying to set a high priority to a television with Netflix install because another PC that is being used hoards the bandwidth, but QoS just isn't working. Also, I'm curious as to which device would be given the bandwidth if both were set to Premium priority if you happen to know.

2nd: When reviewing the bandwidth charts, the network's traffic output is ridiculous, slowing the download speed to a crawl of about 10 KB/s. This phenomenon only occur about 2-3 times a night. It also appears to be triggered by a certain program (Steam) and continues to be unstable and slow even after such program's closure. The charts claim to have an output upwards of 4 Mb/s while my ISP only provides and upload of 1 Mb. This cannot be right.

Any help on these issues would be very much appreciated. I've been spending most of my free time trying to fix these problems and any help would save me from frustration.

  • Fixed Wireless Internet Setup?

I recently upgraded my internet service to a Fixed Wireless Internet connection, mainly for more bandwidth and reduced latency. So how the setup goes is like this:

The dish is pointed at the tower.

The dish is then wired into the house with a CAT 5e Ethernet cord where it then connects to an unknown device that plugs into the wall.

That device then connects also via CAT 5e to a D-Link DIR-601 Router.

My question is what exactly is the unknown device? It almost looks like an AC adapter for a phone charger. It doesnt have a company name anywhere on it. It has 2 Ethernet ports on the bottom which are labled as Radio (Input) and LAN/PC (Output). The sticker on the back simply reads:

    SDA-1 Type 2

    Model: AD24-1480500-WP

I have been looking into getting a new router because of stability issues until it crossed my mind that this could be the problem.

When I search the model number in Google only one result turns up and I really doesnt give me any info at all.

Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Addressing the stability issues... I have configured my router to match many, many recommendations on how to solve this problem. None seem to work. I have also checked my DNS with multiple DNS benchmarks to find the most reliable but to no avail.

  • How to get my ISP to install better lines.?

I live in a rural part of Montana where my maximum speed 1.5 Kb/s. My family is very technology dependent and our speed is too slow for all of us to use. We have tried contacting our ISP about upgrading but we have the fastest possible. There is absolutely no other Service Provider available where we live. (Believe me) I have cousins that can get much faster speeds only a mile away. Is there any way to convince my ISP of helping? Any policies I can use to my advantage. My ISP is Blackfoot Telecommunications (Blackfoot.com). They claim to offer faster speeds in the town that I live in but when I call them they still refuse. Any advice would be very appreciated. We are almost to the point of desperation with ridiculous monopoly. Please don't say to move because that is out of the question. Thanks.

  • Kindle using more Network bandwidth?

Me and my brother often catch up on youtube videos at the same time (me on my iPhone and he on his kindle) and it seems like his kindle has a higher bandwidth priority than my iPhone. It almost feels as if I'm getting what he doesn't use. We have a 1.5Mb/s Internet speed, but only get download speeds of 160KB/s. Is there some way I can change this so it is equal between the 2?

Thanks and any help is appreciated.

  • Help on wiping my laptops hard drive?

I recently decided to try and find a way to completely wipe my hard drive because there was too much junk on it to go through so I thought I might as well delete my hard drive and reinstall the programs I want rather that going through the whole computer.

I came across a program called DBAN that creates a boot disk that will erase the drive. I created the disk on DVD-R, and then changed my BIOS settings to boot from Internal CD/DVD reader.

So I put in the disk and reboot my system.

It did recognize the disk but, it displayed this message:

No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!

    boot: _

Any help on why this is happening would be greatly appreciated. I plan on getting some CD-Rs to see if that would make a difference.

    Thanks :)

  • Black Ops 2 Preorder Questions?

I am trying to decide if I want to buy from Best Buy or GameStop. GameStop had a poster they were giving away but that's over now. So I want to order from Best Buy for the dog tags, but I have some questions about Best Buy.

    1) Do you still get Nuketown 2025 and all of the following extras?

    2) Do you still get the option of switching the order to Hardened Edition if one is released?

    Thanks for your answers!
