“Keep your head down,” he hissed urgently. I kept quiet and focused on the sweat that was running down his face. His face still had dirt on it from going underground. His face was tense, complicated, it was like he was in deep thought, but he was just listening to the others’ conversation.

“How much do you want for that one?” I heard one of them ask. I flinched at the sound of his voice, which was like nails scraping metal; it sent Goosebumps down my arm. I peeked through the bushes at the men dressed in black. Each one of them had a flashlight pointed at her. And probably machine guns behind their backs. He pointed the flashlight at a red head that seemed about our age.

Josh took out his gun. I tugged on his arm and slowly pulled him down.

“What are you planning on doing with that?” I murmured quietly and pointed to his gun. It was pitch black outside, and I couldn’t even tell where I was pointing.

“Hey, you hear something, man?” One of them asked. Josh slammed his hand over my mouth and I could tell he was shushing me with his eyes, but I really wasn't sure, the darkness around us was far too incredible.

I closed my eyes and tried to ignore the temptation to bite his hand away and scream. It was harder than I thought since everything was so quiet. All I heard were the dog’s howling and cricket’s soft singing.

“Its nuthin’, just give me the damn money, and you could have her,” I heard the man throw the girl on the soiled, hard ground. And then, she started moaning. I barely heard her, but I caught some words she said.

“Please…I’ll do whatever…just don’t do this to me…” she trailed off. I wanted to cry for her, her voice alone caught me. But she was already crying and I doubt me crying would help. She sounded so broken, totally wrecked and used. I placed my hand over Josh’s so I wouldn’t do anything stupid. Again. I could feel the warm tears escaping my eyes. I shook my head a little, but it didn’t help. Josh shook his head at me begging me not to cry. I could see the silhouette of his hair and the way he was going to kill me when we get back home. If we get back. He removed his hand from over my mouth.

He took my face in his hand, “Don’t cry again, I’m begging you. You’re going to blow my cover again,” he implored. I nodded lamely. He sat on his knees by me and ushered me to hide deeper in the bushes.

“Don’t shoot,” I told him. He ignored me and went back hiding behind the trees.
