  • Car buying advice?

I currently have a 96 Nissan Maxima. It has needed ongoing work for the last 6 months that's added up to a couple of thousand dollars. At this point I think it's time to stop throwing money after the problem and get a different car.

My question is, should I buy a new car or used? I will have access to about $7,000 plus whatever I can get for this Maxima. I could also get a car loan if need be. I live in a big city, need a gas efficient car, and would prefer one that is comfortable and has a bit of zip without being a sedan or a sportscar.

Last night I looked at some Sentras and the Versas. These look promising, the right size and price range. But they also lack spunk. I can't quite explain it but I want a car with personality.

Any advice? New or used? Models in the compact/affordable range that you'd recommend?

    Thanks!

  • CHICAGO How can I contest a tow or not pay the fee?

I stupidly tried parking up on Irving Park/Broadway area. I parked on a block where the meters said I didn't have to pay them until 9am on Monday morning. I was leaving at 7:30 so no big deal. I noted the signs on the corner for snow emergencies, street cleanings, and the usual stuff. Ok, I'm covered. The next morning I got up, car is gone, the other end of the block is where they planted the "Tow Zone 7am-9am" sign. Argh. Double argh.

Now I have to pay $160 to get it out of impound. Any advice? Is this worth fighting? Is there a way to get out of the fee? Why does Chicago do this to it's residents???? It seems like an unfair tax. Any advice?

  • How much is the average raise when working for a state government?

I have worked in a mid-level managerial position for almost a year and a half. They have recently offered me a 2.5% raise. However this barely covers a cost of living increase. Can anyone share with me what their average raise increase has been and advice on negotiating more?
