I have been a front line crisis counselor/ social worker for 15+ years - particularly in the area of family violence. I'm also a parent of 2 globe trotting (grown) sons, and a proud step and foster parent. I am madly in love with life and my very own Viking husband. I believe that life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive & well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out & screaming, "Woo Hoo What a ride!" Have a wonderful day!
Resources to help me support a young woman with FAS, who is 16 weeks pregnant?
Does anyone know of any websites, reading material, etc. that I can use while providing support for a 19 year old woman with FAS. The girl is determined to keep her baby, she loves children. She currently lives with her family but it is extremely dysfunctional (generational FAS, drugs & addictions, family violence, etc.). Her parents have had ongoing involvement with Child Protection Services and the girl and her siblings have been in and out of foster care several times.
The baby's father is somewhat in the picture but it would be much better for this baby if he were not - 40 year old addict with several children by several women, none of which he supports. I have heard through the grapevine that Child Protection will apprehend the baby at birth if my client decides to move in with him.
My client would like to live on her own with her baby. She is being careful to take good care of herself while pregnant. And with the right supports, I think she could be a good mother to this baby. I just would like to be able to share some resources with her or learn some techniques I can teach her, to help her succeed. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you

Help, I need to know how to read the word "English" in Japanese. I'm trying to buy a gift certificate...?
I'm trying to buy a gift certificate on Amazon, Japan for my son. He is living in Japan and ordering from the certificate directly from Amazon.jp will mean he won't have 2/3 of the certificate used up in the shipping and handling. But the entire site is in Japanese and I don't know how to read the word "English". I really appreciate any help. Thank you!

3 AnswersJapan1 decade agoCan anyone recommend a safe site to watch "V - Episode 1" online in Canada?
I've not been able to find one that will allow someone outside of the U.S. to view this TV show.

All U.S. sites, that I know of, won't allow online viewing of this show if you're outside the states.
3 AnswersDrama1 decade agoEverytime I eat popcorn from our local theatre, I get violently sick. What could cause this?I don't use butter?
Last night was the third time I got sick after eating their popcorn (and I only ate about 2/3 of a small bag). The first time I got sick I thought I had food poisoning from something else. The second time I suspected it might be the popcorn so yesterday I didn't eat very much of it but still ended up feeling intense stomach cramps (at least this time I wasn't vomitting, etc., all night long like the last 2 times.) I never get butter put on it so I wonder if the oil they use could be contaminated? Or maybe it's something to do with the cleaning of the equipment (or lack of?)? Any ideas? I've talked to a few other people who say they've also felt sick after eating that popcorn but didn't realize that might be what was causing it. Any ideas on what exactly would cause this?
4 AnswersOther - Health1 decade agoPregnant women/parents of children 0-6 yrs: What free programs/workshops on safety/awareness would you like?
I coordinate the Community Action Program for Children in our area and am looking for ideas for new programs that parents would be interested in. I'm also interested in any ideas for programs that would fall into the "Healthy Living" category. We already run a Community Kitchen and 2 parent interactive "Tumble Bumble" gym programs for kids under 7. Any input much appreciated!

2 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoParents of infants, toddlers & preschoolers, what are some free workshops or programs you wish were available?
The workshops would have to fall under three broad categories: 1) Active Lifestyle 2) Nutrition 3) Safety and Awareness
I appreciate any input. Thanks
5 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoI don't understand why some people are so critical of spelling or grammar that they miss the point...
... that they miss the point of the question being asked? I thought the purpose of Yahoo Answers was to provide an open forum for everyone to be able to talk about subjects of interest to them. I thought that part of what makes Yahoo Answers so great was that it allows everyone from the 9 year old little girl who's curious about wearing a bra, to the 90 year old man in Romania who collects stamps, to ask or answer a question. Yes, spelling, punctuation and grammar are important. But in this forum, I think the dialogue is what's most important. The person reading a question or answer has no idea who the writer is or where they come from. Many, many people on this site do not have English as their first language. Yahoo Answers is not limited to only English speaking countries but is available throughout the world. So... I really don't get why so many people, who are probably fairly nice and intelligent normally, are being judgemental and even insulting in this format? Any thoughts?
12 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoAs a freight train goes around a curve, is the stability effected by the number of boxcars? If a train...?
is significantly longer than normal, would the tail end be more likely to tip over? My husband and I are, um, debating this. I've said that it would be more likely to tip - and used the example of a semi truck pulling a fully loaded container going around a corner. Assuming that your driver is professional and able to adjust the speed, etc. and assuming that the engine has enough power... now imagine the truck pulling 2 containers (Super B) . ok, can be done. Now imagine the truck pulling 8 containers! Those last few containers are much more likely to tip, aren't they? My Husband almost agreed with me for a moment there but says it's different for trains because they run on tracks, so it makes no difference if the train has 100 cars or 200. (sigh - I even tried a little kitchen experiment with cans of pop but the elastics kept breaking) Does anyone know the right answer here? We have a back rub riding on this! Thanks!

3 AnswersOther - Canada1 decade agoAny ideas on keeping kids from being bored during the reception? Ages are two 16 yr. old boys, 13 & 9...?
...year old boys, and a 4 year old flower girl who only speaks Danish. I thought maybe setting up a video game system in another part of the beautiful old heritage home that we've booked for the occassion - but really am not sure if this is a good idea. Would assigning specific tasks to the boys make them feel included (and help to keep them occupied) or just feel put upon? (I don't NEED them to do anything but I can definitely come up with tasks if that would keep them involved and interested) Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks.
7 AnswersEngagements & Weddings1 decade agoDoes anyone remember that song that Pebbles & Bam-Bam sang on the Flinstones, way back when...?
It went something like, "So let the sunshine in, face it with a grin." And then I remember it as going "Losers always lose, and winners always win." - but that can't be right. It's just one of those utterly trivial things that nag at me once in a while :o)
4 AnswersMusic1 decade agoGlobal warming question: It is a fact that the polar ice caps are slowly melting and this is supposed to...?
cause water levels to rise. I'm having trouble understanding this because the majority of the ice is under water. When you put ice in water, the water level stays the same once the ice melts. Only if the ice is solid right to the bottom and rises significantly above the water, does the level increase. (I couldn't help doing some kitchen experiments - my husband thinks I've finally lost it :o) So... Is the majority of ice at the polar caps, solid right down to the ocean floor? I don't understand how else the water levels could rise. I haven't yet seen the docmentary, "An Inconvenient Truth" - maybe this is answered there.
Thanks, Just curious.
7 AnswersEnvironment1 decade agoWondering if you would take a moment to reflect?
With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person which almost went unnoticed last week.
Larry LaPrise, the man that wrote "The Hokey Pokey" died peacefully at the age of 93.
The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin.
They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.
Smile - you know its funny!
9 AnswersJokes & Riddles1 decade agoDoes anyone know the name of the song from the 70's that starts with the sound of a train?
The train seems to start off from one speaker then move to the next before fading away. Any ideas?
