  • Functional Transformal mapping. Can you answer this q ?

My Yahoo friend argues that the following question can be answered.

    Me; i'm not so sure!

Kindly offer the most rigorous argument you can in support of your answer.

    The Question:

    ============

Point (1,8)is on the graph of y=f(x).

Where does the point (1,8) get mapped to when the following mapping functions constructed out of the parent function f(x) are applied?

    1) -2 f( -x) - 7

    2) 0.5 f( 0.5(x+3) ) + 7

In particular, are you able to state the co-ordinates of the transformed point.

  • Is every line in R2 the graph of some function of x ? Explain?

I think this is a 'pure maths' type problem so I'm looking for a clear rigorous explanation please.

  • word value problem leading to system of simultaneous equations?

I have found this elegant little puzzle problem:

    Each letter has a value.

    you are given: too=4 , top=6, tap=9

you are to find the value of potato.

you begin by creating the first of a set of 3 simultaneous equations

    1) t + 2*o = 4

and end by combining your equations to be able to calculate the value of potato!

Can anyone create similar problems. I wouldn't want any more than 5 variables to be involved.
