We've all witnessed the chaos that the ash cloud from that volcano in Iceland has caused in the past week and a bit - this is the twenty first century, we have an amazing amount of technology at our disposal, so why don't all the western governments get together and fund the construction of a massive lid to put on top of the volcano, thus stopping the ash cloud?

It could be flown to the crater by several helicopters in unison, surely?

If we can land men on the moon, then surely this should be no problem.

I appreciate the cost would be high, but then again, look at the cost to the airlines and indeed the European economy in general of last week's grounding of most air traffic. And surely it could be used over and over again, wherever a volcano is erupting, saving thousands from misery...
