  • Birthday party for adult - is a gift needed?

I will be attending a birthday party tomorrow with my boyfriend, where we will be paying our own way and presume we will also be paying for part of the honoree's dinner. (The restaurant is fairly pricey.) I am making the cake and am wondering if we also need to bring a gift? I have something small, as well as a card, which will be from the two of us and the cake will be semi-professional as I was formerly a cake decorator but I do not want to look cheap (or be the only one with no gift) and am asking your advice.

Do you think a gift is needed in this situation and if so, about how much would you spend?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

  • What to do about my suitemate's bathroom issues?

I am completely at a loss for how to deal with my suitemate. I've introduced myself to her, but as the bathroom is between our two suites, we do not see each other face to face, ever. Since the beginning of this year she's been leaving nasty little surprises in the bathroom. She's desecrated the toilet seat on numerous occasions, and leaves it for me to clean, and once, *bled* on the floor (and not from a wound either if you get my drift.)

I don't know how to ask her to cease this nastiness without causing embarrassment and or resentment (or more importantly, retaliation). I still have another semester left with this suitemate, and want to speak with her (or leave a note, or something) but don't even know how to begin to address this.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

  • Dangers of hand sanitizer?

When I first looked at the headline of this article:

Doctors warn of poisoning from hand gels

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070131/hl_nm/handgels...

I assumed there was some sort of actual danger here. Turns out people are drinking it, and doctors suggest that manufacturers change the labeling on hand sanitizers so it does not cause people to think there is ethanol in their products.

What do you think about this article?

How does one solve a transcendental equation on a Ti-89? I had thought the command was nSolve, but am not quite sure how it works.

  • Gem mines in the Midwest?

I'm looking for an open-to-the-public gemstone mine in the Midwest region of the US, sort of like the North Carolina emerald and hiddenite mine where anyone can go and look for gems. Do you know of any?

    Thanks in advance! :-)

  • Least squares analysis in Excel?

How does one perform least-squares analysis in Excel? I need a y=mx+b formula for a graph, and although the instructions suggest using Excel, they do not specify how to do this.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Job fair attire?

Is an offwhite suit (paired with burgundy blouse) permissible for wearing to a job fair? The career field is engineering. Generally the men wear black suits and cool colored shirts, and the women wear dark slacks, collared blouses, and no suit jacket. Does the fact that it's after Labor Day affect the issue at all?

  • Hanging a mirror?

I came back to my dorm after summer and discovered that a large mirror had been removed. The mirror (which was about 3 ft tall and 1 ft wide) was originally attached to a closet door (wood with some sort of finish) and left a lot of adhesive residue when removed. How could I hang a new mirror on the door without using something that will damage the wood? I don't want the mirror to fall, but can't use nails, screws, or anything that isn't removable or leaves a hole.

  • Oblivion (Xbox 360) load times?

Why does Oblivion on XBox 360 take 20 min. (yes, I timed it) to run up a new game, several minutes to load an area, and why does it freeze for a minute or so every time I loot a corpse, equip a weapon, or make the game "think" in any other way? I normally play the game on my dual core PC and experience a few seconds of load time, so is the problem with the XBox or game, or is this normal? What can I do to remedy this, if it can indeed be fixed? Thanks in advance. :-)

  • Dumbest instructions you've ever seen?

Just for fun, what's the dumbest set of instructions you've ever seen, and what product was it on? For example, I once saw a thermometer with instructions that said, "Do not use orally after using rectally."

Sorry if this seems miscategorized, there really was no good category for this one. :-)

  • Nuclear reactor core questions?

I'm confused about a textbook question that asks how the power of a homogenous uranium reactor would be affected by a person standing next to the core. Would the person change the fuel moderator ratio (since people are mostly water), or would there be no effect?

Also, how would launching the core into outer space affect its power?

The textbook does not discuss these particular questions, nor was I able to find the answers by web search. Thank you in advance :-)

  • Would you be able to do these things?

    1) If you were stranded in the wilderness after a plane crash, would you eat the corpses of others to survive?

    2) If you were working in a Level 5 biohazard lab and stabbed yourself with a needle possibly infected with Ebola, would you slice that finger off (one has so many seconds to cut off one's finger to prevent the infection from spreading via the bloodstream)? (The needle may or may not be infected, we don't know for sure.)

    3) Would you be able to inject yourself with a needle in the heart/pericardium should you so require it?

    Just curious.

  • What to do about people who talk in class?

It seems like in every lecture I go to, there are some rude people who deem it necessary to talk while the professor is talking. I don't mean whispered, "when is the homework due?", what I'm talking about is people who talk at normal speaking volume while the lecture is going on.

For example, a group of people talks loudly in one of my lectures about their weekend conquests and how "dude, I was sooo drunk." I notice a lot of people giving them angry glares, but what can be done about them? (The professor does not appear to care, and it's hard to listen to him over the talking).

  • Door-holding etiquette?

What are your suggestions for how to deal with people you hold open a door for, and they walk through like it's their right without thanking you? Or, should everyone just stop holding doors open?

I used to say 'You're welcome' to these people, but they act like I am the rude one, or tell me I'm rude. Opinions?

  • Polar coordinates/curvilinear motion?

A point P moves along the spiral path r=(0.1)theta ft, where theta is in radians. The angular position theta=2t rad, where t is in seconds, and r=0 at t=0. Determine the magnitudes of the velocity and acceleration of P at t=1 s.

Not sure how to approach the problem, we've tried dr/dt=dr/dtheta * dtheta/dt. That gives dr/dt=0.2, which just doesn't seem correct. Is this right, or if not, what method would be a better approach?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

  • Energy of photons?

Filament of 100W lightbulb has 100 ohm resistance. At 20 V the filament is red, what color is the filament at 100 V?

I know that the photons will be at a higher energy level, but I'm not sure what equation I should use. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

  • Multivariate Limits?

An infinite sequence of points p1...pn in the plane is said to converge and have limit p0: limx->infinity pn = po

if for each E>0 there is an integer N such that d(pn,po)<E for n>N show that the limit p0 is unique.

    Hint: If pn->po and pn->po' , po'(not equal to)po, then take E=1/3d(po,po') and obtain a contradiction.

Any insights into how to begin this problem would be greatly appreciated.
