Well, I do tend to be a bit of a know-it-all but I am trying to be helpful, really. And if I'm fuzzy on an answer, I'll let you know it.

  • Allied Waste curbside recycling in East TX - what's the deal?

I signed up literally months ago for the curbside recycling program. Have never received a bin. Was told could put it out in a laundry basket. Sits there and the regular trash gets it the next day - and it goes in the landfill. Anyone else have this going on? Any suggestions what to do about it (city has contract with Allied Waste Management, so I don't have the option of changing companies) would be most welcome.

  • Recordings/sheet music of sephardic music?

I heard a wonderful program on the radio during Chanukah, with a song from the 15th century based on Hannah's lament, but they only played part of it. The group was called Western Wind. Does anyone know availability of recordings or sheet music for songs like this? I would like to get some not only for personal use, but to donate to the local library and schools. I want there to be more Sephardic and Jewish music accessible to my community.

  • Pregnant avatars! Who's excited?

Yahoo finally put one maternity outfit on the avatars page, under "Mother's Day" for some reason. It's pink, which I hate, but at least my avatar looks like me! Anyone else excited? Anybody have comments about other things they should add to make avatars more people-friendly?

  • Recommendations for children's language primers?

I speak English and French fluently, and a little Spanish, and some basic American Sign Language. I can count, ask costs, and purchase basic foods and beer in German and Japanese - military brat, what can I say? My sister's Spanish is excellent, and I have a friend fluent in Japanese. So, the plan is that this baby will be exposed to as many languages as possible.

I would like, then, to get some good children's primers in those languages. In addition, I know it's peculiar, but I am looking for a children's Latin primer and some basic materials in Old English. Any suggestions would be very welcome- there are a lot of primers out there, but I want to use the clearest and most accurate!

  • Sources for flushable/disposable liners for cloth diapers?

I found these things called gDiapers but they are really dear, and my mum has already started sewing cloth diapers for my baby. She said when I was a little one there were paper liners you could put in the cloth diapers to get rid of solid waste easily - does anyone know where I could get something like that nowadays? I have tried looking at department stores, grocery stores, and baby shops, so I'm thinking the internet might be my last hope...thanks for any help!

  • Why doesn't anyone seem to use the library anymore?

I realize that the internet is an excellent resource, but I am starting to worry - I am seeing questions in homework help and in the general education categories here that print media would be better references for, but usually people pop a few websites up and don't bother to even mention the idea of looking in a book. Also, I'm somewhat disturbed by parents asking for the answers for their children's homework (are they doing the homework for them?) and students seeming to assume that "help" means "give me the answer!" instead of assisting them in sorting out the question. I was given a sort of snide little comment by the asker when I broke down questions on Romeo & Juliet instead of just answering them... Ah well, why do my "questions" seem to be rants more than questions? (Don't answer that...) So - topic: why the apparent fall in library use? Is it an actual decline or merely perceived?

  • Pregnant on St. Paddy's - what can I drink if I can't have my Guinness?

Last St. Paddy's Day I only had to do without meat, I could still have my beer - this year I can have my meat but no beer so does anyone have any sort of non-alcoholic drink recipe that would look festive on my table this evening? My husband keeps suggesting dyeing some fruit juice green but as I told him, if I don't drink green beer, green tea, or green anything else, why would I drink green fruit juice?

Happy St. Pat's to all! Eire abu!

  • Have the wild geese lost more than they gained?

I am 4th generation Irish in America, and had the distinct advantage of being raised knowing it, with my mother's main regret being that neither she nor my father nor my grandparents had any of the Irish to teach us. I know songs & stories, and on meeting expatriate Irish we've always been able to get on. I also always knew to keep my mouth shut about the Troubles despite having relatives in Belfast, being that we are here and have no business spouting off about things we have no experience of. So, I suppose my question is, with all the ridiculousness about to happen on Friday, do most Irish here in America have any idea what being Irish is about? I'd love to hear some answers from anyone currently in Ireland or expatriate as well.

  • Where can I buy Hebrew National in East Texas?

In fact, any source of kosher food in East Texas? I'm missing my BoTampte and such as well...I can do without the gefilte fish though, thanks, it seems to be the only thing on the shelf here and it's usually ancient. I will drive anywhere between Shreveport, LA and Tyler, TX since I have to go out of town to get any groceries really anyway.

  • Carbon monoxide in your meat - What do you think?

FDA is urged to ban carbon-monoxide-treated meat

    By Rick Weiss

    The Washington Post

WASHINGTON — Picture two steaks on a grocer's shelf, each hermetically sealed in clear plastic wrap. One is bright pink, rimmed with a crescent of pearly white fat. The other is brown, its fat the color of a smoker's teeth.

    Which do you reach for?

The meat industry knows the answer, which is why it has quietly begun to spike meat packages with carbon monoxide.

The gas, harmless to health at the levels being used, gives meat a bright pink color that lasts weeks. The hope is that it will save the industry much of the $1 billion it says it loses annually from having to discount or discard meat that is reasonably fresh and perfectly safe but no longer pretty.

  • What sort of food is appropriate to post overseas?

My brother is stationed overseas, and I should very much like to send him something other than sweets. I have found some mexican "hot sauce" and condiments that should post well, but what sorts of supplemental foods might I send him that won't be smashed to bits or otherwise ruined on the way without emptying my bank account?

  • How do I renegotiate my wage without getting fired or quitting?

I am doing the work of a manager which according to pay charts should be minimum $10.45 an hour. However, I'm only getting paid $7.15 an hour. How can I point out that my workload far exceeds my wage without sounding like I'm whining or just giving up and getting another job?
