What sort of food is appropriate to post overseas?

My brother is stationed overseas, and I should very much like to send him something other than sweets. I have found some mexican "hot sauce" and condiments that should post well, but what sorts of supplemental foods might I send him that won't be smashed to bits or otherwise ruined on the way without emptying my bank account?

If you pack everything in airtight freezer bags, you should be able to send most anything. Try popping popcorn and packing that in baggies in between things (you can jazz up the popcorn with flavors and spices). If you put things in baggies, they can pack easier. I send disposable camaras, newspapers, socks, peanuts (real and packing) for cushion, wet wipes (they work well in the desert), crackers, granola bars, sunflower seeds, canned nuts, cracker jacks, cans of chip dip, cans of anything. I generally put things I'm worried about expanding into baggies, in case they burst, they are still contained. Besides, they reuse the baggies over there.... also, you can freeze cookies, cakes, cupcakes, etc, for extra freshness, they will be thawed after a few days if packed well...have fun

I am from Chicago and when we have visitors (both overseas and from other regions of the US) we have quite a few things we want them to experience. We make sure that they have Chicago style pizza (we prefer Gino's East), they have to have a true Chicago hotdog with a poppy seed bun. We usually go out one of steakhouses or have steaks at home. Going to a steakhouse is an experience that some people do not understand. When my sister's boyfriend came in from the East Coast he could not believe that they brought the raw meat out to the table. If we are going to cook at home, we go to this little butcher shop and the quality of steaks is unlike anything else they are amazing! I uxsed to make my parents bring down steaks when I was living in Virginia, just because the quality is so much better. We also have a summer home in Wisc. and there is nothing more traditional than taking someone out for a Friday night All you can eat fish fry! If they are coming during the summer it is a must.

The smashed to bits part is easily taken care of. Bubble wrap it, then put it in a box with peanuts surounding it and then in the larger box where everything else is going make sure to put peanuts in there.

The appropriate part deals with customs and every country is different as to what can be recieved.

Cookies are good smashed. But you said not sweets. Really, as long as you package it well, whatever you send should be fine. Get a sheet of bubble wrap.

Anything that can't melt or go rotten quickly should be good.
