  • Why do people bother to ask why facebook is down?

Obviously there is a problem... why not just wait until it's solved? This is particularly annoying when the question has already been asked 50 times!

  • What is this weird instrument?

Played by a member of Arcade Fire on Saturday Night Live. I don't have a photo, but it's some kind of thing with a crank on the end... what the heck is it?

It sort of looks like it might have strings inside it or something. She held it like a guitar and cranked it from the bottom end. It had a big black piece over the middle where the strings would be on a guitar... ?

  • Why does it swell up like this?!?

I fell out of a tree and hurt my ankle somehow. Basically I twisted it I think, but it's not hurt that bad and I can walk and everything, so why does it look like there's a baseball embedded under my skin? Am I hurt worse than I think? I am putting ice on it and took Advil.

FYI, I did rescue my airplane :)

  • Pilots: local wind speeds online?

Where can I get a map of local wind speeds and direction online? I want to get detailed maps if I can. This is so I can determine the proper locations to fly various RC planes. I have some that can take no wind, some that need less than 10mph, some that can handle 20mph... so I need accurate speeds that are current. This is in Lakewood, CO and the wind speeds change by the hour. The obvious weather sites don't seem to have what I need. I checked Weather.com,local news sites and NOAA, and NCAR. All I can get is the readings from Buckley AFB, DIA, and Jeffco Airport, which are all miles from here. Is that as accurate as it can get?

  • Web sites where I can browse flights?

I want to go somewhere for a little vacation, and I don't particularly care where it is, so I'm looking for a web site where I can browse flights and look to see what catches my eye. I know where I'm leaving from and when, but I don't know where I want to go and I'd like to get a list of prices for various places.

  • Is clicker training a forever thing?

Someone's question has got me thinking about doing clicker training with my new puppy. He's very smart and doesn't really need it, but it sounds like a way to help him focus better on which action earned the reward. Sometimes he's doing multiple things because he just doesn't know what I want, and the clicker would help him understand what exactly it was that got him his treat. So that's all great and everything, but will I be able to stop using the clicker after a while? I don't want to start if it means I'll have to use it forever.

  • Why do students not understand?

...that if they come on here and someone just gives them the answer, that they won't learn a damn thing?

Also, don't teachers look for their homework questions on here? I would. Teachers! Sound off please!

I'm annoyed because I come on here and give very good answers about how to figure things out for yourself, and then the best answer always ends up being "dude, it's 45.87 meters" or something like that. I have taught Chemistry to Junior high kids and my kids weren't like that... they wanted to learn.

  • Can we fix global warming with huge wind farms?

Or heat exchangers or something like that... anything to take energy out of the air, convert it to something useful, and put back less heat than we took out? (That's the trick, to gather the heat somehow and use it without turning it back into heat in the air)

  • Why do so many people think they can be "breeders"?

Everyone knows there is a pet overpopulation problem. Everyone knows that a pregnant dog and a litter of puppies is going to be a royal pain in the butt. People should understand that dog breeders already exist and we don't need more, after all, I assume they got their dog from a breeder if they think it's worth breeding. And finally, why do people not understand that crossing two breeds is a worthless waste of time and will not result in anything of value?

Please folks, do not breed your dogs! Being a breeder is much more complicated than putting two dogs together and getting puppies. If you don't understand complex things about genetics and have vast knowledge of the specific dogs you want to breed and their pedigrees and the pedigrees of all those dogs, and so on, you won't be able to select proper crosses and will only contribute to messing up the bloodlines. Why do people think it's as simple as putting two registered dogs together?

  • Unoccupied Territory?

When I was a child, I remember seeing on my globes and maps that there was a region which was always colored white, and marked as "Unoccupied Territory" or "Neutral Zone" or something like that. It was roughly diamond-shaped and somewhere in the middle east, I think. Does anyone remember this and do you know what it was, is, or why it's not on maps anymore? As a kid I wondered about it, but back then we didn't have the research tools we have now, and nobody knew what it was. This would have been in the 70s and 80s...
