  • How do I proceed in this situation?

A month ago I had a meeting with my professor asking if she would provide recommendation letters for graduate schools. She said although my perpetual lateness to class was dragging my grade down she would have wait to see all of my class work (papers and tests) to determine my final grade. She required a grade of A- or A in order to provide recommendations. Then I can just contact her during winter break and drop off recommendation forms.

The grades came in a week ago (got an A-) and I emailed her informing her of the grade I received. Today she emails me back saying something to the effect of "I now have too many recommendations to write and cannot dedicate any more of my time to this so I cannot write your recommendation letters". I need her to write three letters of recommendation or I will not be able to apply to three of the eight graduate schools on my list. Is there anything further I can do?

  • Should I notify the writers of my recommendation letters that I did not get accepted by the schools?

My (now former) boss and a former professor wrote recommendation letters for my graduate school applications this past fall. I e-mailed each of them to thank them for their efforts immediately after they submitted the letters. Now the results are in and I did not get accepted. What is proper etiquette in this situation? Do I notify them that I didn't get accepted or is that unnecessary?

  • Is there a next phase after jealousy?

I'm the one that ended the relationship, vowing to remain friends. On the surface I've moved on and am seeing other people. But now that he's moved on as well I realize that practically we can't remain friends and be fair to our partners. Is there like an emotion arc where after missing, jealousy comes acceptance and moving on? It's been almost a year. Am I just confusing feelings of jealousy with wanting that relationship back?

  • What can I do to help my grandmother?

She had a mild fall nearly a week ago. Thought everything was fine, only a few bruises. However today she has had pain in the colo-rectal area as well as a feeling of always needing to go. A nurse suggested it may be a fractured coccyx. She does most likely have hemroid as she has had limited mobility for nearly 5 years now. How can I ease her discomfort or read up on what her condition is likely to be?

  • Oh no, I'm taking my mom for a mother daughter trip to D.C. 5/23-5/26,?

and I just got around to looking up some tours for Friday night. To my dismay the monuments by moonlight and such tours all need a reservation at least 4 days in advance. Does anyone know any other good quick intro tours I could still book? Or maybe book in the afternoon to take in the evening? OR do you recommend skipping organized touring all together and d.i.y. ?

  • Are used coffee grounds/tea ok to use as fertilizer for potted pansies and window boxes?

When I tried sprinkling tea a few years ago into a house plant I ended up having to dispose of the whole thing because of fruit flies. Now I got large pots with pansies and it says fertilize every two weeks. Should I buy some fertilizer or try the coffee/tea route? Any suggestions for natural spider mite remedies? They do seem to come back every year on anything I grow :(

  • What do Orange Juice companies do with the pulp?

While squeezing own orange juice this morning I realised I had tons of pulp left over. I started wondering what comercial producers do with the pulp left over from the process of making pulp free juice? What do they do with it all? Anybody who works in a o.j. plant know? Or know a website that answers my question? Thanks.

  • I need advice on career selection. Play it safe or bet it all?

I just graduated with a B.A. in Psych/Women's Studies. However I have no experience in that field and have instead been working part time for over 2 years now as an Archival Assistant (that's Library Science). Now I have been offered a full time position.

Should I stick to building a career in Library Science since I have "broken in" to this field already or explore the seemingly endless myriad of choices to do with Psychology. Or thirdly to go back to school for Nursing; which many ppl (nurses included) assure me is a money making "insta-career".

  • Is it possible to grow okra in flower boxes?

I read that it's ideal for backyard gardens but I live in Brooklyn with no back yard. I want to grow something edible out of the flower boxes I have...they're about 2 feet x 1 x1...would that be enough soil to sustain even one okra plant?

  • Butternut Squash Soup? I know this is the hundredth butternut squash soup question but...?

I'm not seeing quite the answer I need. I have Anise seeds that I want to incorporate into a butternut squash soup...how would I do that? Do i need to pulverise the seeds or just simmer them in butter and then strain them out? Would adding a clove of garlic, cream, and some chicken stock make for a good combo of flavors? I'm missing some of the traditional common ingredients for this soup like ginger and brown sugar but want to use up the garlic and anise seeds that I have aplenty. Thanks.

  • Is an open bottle of wine alowed in a new york city park?

I want to have a more grown up picnic than iced tea and punch. But is it even allowed to have open alcoholic beverages of any type? Even just sipping wine? Or is some bad tempered cop in the right to ticket me?
