  • Need to estimate how big of a power transformer we need...?

Howdy! I live in Santa Cruz, Bolivia at present, where the electrical current supplied at the household is 220 Volts. I have a number of appliances we brought from the USA and they run on 110V. They are not yet here in the house, so I can't look on the electrical panels on the back of them to find the info I need.

In a nutshell, we need to buy voltage transformers, so are trying to find out how big of one we will need for the various rooms. However, I don't have access to the electrical info on the appliances, nor the owners manuals yet, but the transformers here are sold by WATTAGE, as opposed to amperes drawn by the attached machines.

I wrote down amp draws, so need to convert them to watts in order to buy the proper transformers to be ready when the appliances arrive.

I know the formula (P(W) = PF × I(A) × V(V)), but have no idea what power factor to apply. So, assuming the worst case, if I use a factor of 1, here is what I have for an example (our gas dryer):

Dryer draws 15 AMPS. Here is my "bad" calculation...

    3,300(W) = 1.0(PF) × 15(A) × 220(V)

I think this is bad because I am figuring DRAW, on the 110V side of the transformer, so that would be actually 1650(W) = 1.0(PF) × 15(A) × 110(V), correct?

Any suggestions for a more "real" power factor for machines such as a gas dryer, a washing machine, and a fridge (which primarily use an electric motor, right?)? Thanks!

  • unlawful retainer response?

Hi, we have received an unlawful detainer form at our house. We are out of the country and the 5-days to respond is up tomorrow. I know we have to respond, but the paper was not served to a person, it was just put between our screen door (security door) and the house door. My daughter found it when she got home from work. Does that give us automatically extra time to respond? I read somewhere it gives us 15 days if we are not personally served. I will not be back until Saturday (day after tomorrow) late (or early the day after) and don't have any way to respond until then. We are in LA County, California.

I know I will get the usual (deadbeat, pay your rent!) responses, but if someone who knows could help with some advice, it would be greatly appreciated, since we are out of the country and really don't have a good way to speak to an attorney until I get home. I have been out of work for over a year, and my wife is also not working and need surgery, so we really can't afford to be evicted right now. We know we have to go, but if there is a way to delay it a little bit we need to do that.

The immediate problem is how to respond, and how much time we have to do it.

  • Why does Cathy Griffin think we are interested in seeing her naked?

I see that Cathy Griffin recently partially disrobed on Letterman, and apparently also appeared in her bra and undies during the times square new years eve gala...but I am confused.

Why on God's Green Earth does she think we are interested in seeing her nekked? Hell, I can barely stand to see her with all her clothes ON, let alone see that ugly body of hers sans ropas.

I mean, yeah, boobs are boobs, and I will probably look at a nekked chick no matter HOW ugly she is, but I just don't get why Cathy Griffin, of all people in the celebrity world, would think ANYONE would like to see her nekked, or even close to it.

As far as I am concerned, she could be wearing six burlap bags layered over that thing she calles a "body" and it would STILL be showing too much, at least until they gagged her and put another 6 burlaps over her head.

I just don't get it, can any of you explain what is going through her head?

  • I-485 Approval but not yet I-130, wassup with THAT?

My wife and I recently went to see our case officer for her immigration process, and she got approved. We have the approval letter and are now waiting on her green card to arrive, but checking on the kids' statuses (on thier pending I-130's) I noticed that my wife's I-130 has not yet been approved. Don't we get some kind of approval for that also? Wouldn't that have been approved before the I-485 was approved?

BTW...I am a U.S. Citizen and we filed all this stuff after we got married last year, if that makes a difference. Now that she's all approved we can start focusing on the kids' I-130s and thier consular processing. Whew....maybe someday we'll be able to make an end of it. ;)

  • Adopting a non-citizen? What age is OK and when is it too old?

Howdy! I want to adopt a girl that is 17 years old and from Bolivia. She is a friend of the family (like a daughter to my fiance') and I would like to try to get her here and legally adopt her (my fiance' and her "natural" kids will come to be citizens after we marry, but I don't want to have to leave the other girl behind. I would like to know when (for this type of immigration purpose) when the INS draws the line at adoption age? She is going to be 18 in May. Can I adopt her in California now and then work on immigration stuff later? If I adopt here now legally, but it doesn't get resolved until she's (say...) 18 and a half, can she still get her citizenship for being the (adoptive) daughter of a US citizen?
