  • Was this a date/What should I do next?

So I kinda like this girl, and I asked her to get frozen yogurt with me. I picked her up and dropped her off. My intention was just to hang out with her, but we ended up just talking and laughing and we stayed there for like 2 and a half hours. After that, we started texting more and more.

Could that be considered a date? If so, how should I make it clear that I am interested in going out with her? Should I ask her that directly?

  • In your opinion, what is the most difficult kata/form to do?

Do you all remember the first few times you learned martial arts and the sensei/instructor would do some really complicated form for the class to demonstrate, and the new people would be like WHOA! COOL!

I don't know about you all, but after training for a while, I am still impressed by those forms and kata for different reasons, rather than how fancy/stylish they look. Instead, it's more like, whoa, that's a really difficult combo, or something like that.

However, I recently saw a vid of plum flower fist, and once again, I got that feeling of amazement, probably because it looked different from any martial arts style that I had seen before.

In your opinion/experience, what is one kata/form that is the most difficult to do/looks really impressive? Has any kata given you that whoa feeling?

  • Wrapping abdomen w/ athletic tape?

I know some people that train, and they wrap their abs w/ athletic tape. Is this for stability of the back? Or some other reason? Thanks.

If you could reference another article, that would be greatly appreciated.

  • How would you react in a real life situation?

In an actual fight where the opponent charges you, how would you react to that? I've trained, but I am not sure if I can react with my training when confronted in an actual fight. I might just break down and employ untrained techniques. My question is, how would you react?

Besides repetition, is there some other way to change how you would react in that situation?

  • Does sparring/mma limit us in real life?

I've done martial arts for a while now, and I enjoy sparring. I spar with my classmates, and some of my friends who are interested in the martial arts. However, the more I spar, the more I realize that we limit ourselves in an actual situation.

In my style, when we spar, we only wear foot and hand pads. As such, we are told to pull back every strike. Sensei says if we show our opponent that we could have hit him, but do not, it is the same as hitting him. I agree with that, but I think it breeds bad habits.

When we spar, it almost seems like there is a certain etiquette. We are discouraged from doing any "dangerous" techniques such as most spinning/jumping techniques, which is understandable, as they are hard to control, and pack a lot of power. Also, if we successfully execute our combination on the opponent, we are taught to let him regain his composure before continuing.

I've already noticed bad habits when I spar with my friends who have no training. I subconsciously pull back on almost every technique, even though I do not intend to. I also do not like to use most of my techniques as they have power, but lack control. Hell, I don't even like hitting them in the head while they have no qualms about doing that to me.

I guess my ultimate point is in an actual fight, the opponent will not observe the same rules as you do when you spar. They will not pull back. They have no qualms about groin shots, or any other dirty trick. If they hit you, they will keep on coming and will not let you regain your composure. That is why I am afraid that I will lose when it comes to an actual fight. They will come at me with no training, but no limitations on what they can do. I just hope that my adrenaline will force me to forget my own.

I guess my ultimate question is do you think that all this sparring and competition breeds bad habits in an actual combat situation? I feel that I am more inclined to go with Bruce Lee's combat realism philosophy in JKD now that I have had more experience in which both participants hit hard, but wear full body pads as well, getting rid of this holding back stuff.

Also, is there anyway to find out how you would react in a street fight safely?

  • Calf Raise Average Weight?

I was wondering if there was a proportion between your body weight and how much you can do on a standing calf raise. I found that I could do twice my weight. I am 145, and I can calf raise 300 pounds. Is this about average?

  • Good time/situation to ask her out?

So, there was this girl in my class all of last semester. One week before exams, I started talking to her, and I found out that she is one of the coolest and sweetest girls I had ever met. Only thing is, I will not see her all of next year as she will be studying abroad. I would like to ask her out before then, but is it bad timing to ask her? We're not settled into the friend zone yet, and I think she does like me.

If you answer "just do it" please add a few details to that. Or a reason. Or just elaborate on your answer haha.

If it is water weight, why is it important to drink water to help lose it?

  • Iron Man Triathlon Question?

If you just want to run it to see if you can finish, do you still have to qualify and pay the fees and stuff? I would like to be an actual contestant, but I won't be actually competing for the championship.

  • How long do you stay in country before you can say that you live there?

A form I had to fill out asked whether or not I had stayed in another country in the past five years. I wonder how long you had to stay in that country before you can say that you lived there.

  • Sore Muscles after pushups?

So I usually do 150 pushups everyday. But today, I wanted to see how many I could do in an hour. I did them in small sets and held out as longs as I could, which was only 20 minutes. Unfortunately, I was only able to get 510 pushups in that time. My problem is now, I can't even do one pushup. Is that because I've torn my muscle? Or is it something else?

  • Metal Gear Solid 4 CQC?

I watched the final battle between Liquid and Snake and I was wondering what style of martial arts, if any, they were using. It seemed to be mixed martial arts or something.

  • Dilemma involving my best friend?

I've known this girl for several years, and we are pretty close. She's my best friend, though I have deeper feelings for her and have had them for as long as I can remember. This is our senior year now, and we are going to different colleges and I might not see her again. Should I tell her how I feel? I've asked her out once, but I don't think she took it seriously. I just don't want this to ruin our friendship. Any suggestions?
