  • Breeding mixed breeds?

Most people here agree that mixed breed breeders are not responsible; most of them do not do anything near the work needed to produce healthy, genetically sound and good tempered puppies. Plus, there is the issue of random-bred dogs inundating shelters/SPCAs/rescues.

    Reputable purebred breeders

    - test their dogs clear of genetic defects

    - breed for a purpose; an ideal that they hold their dogs to

    - compete with their dogs in some sport or work activity that enables them to compare their dogs with others and get others' opinions on their dogs' abilities in that discipline

    - screen potential owners to ensure their pups go to responsible people

    - have pedigrees on their dogs that enable them to monitor the line's health

    - will take back puppies at any time, for any reason

    - are there for the owner throughout the dog's life

    - require a non-breeding contract for "pet" puppies

If a mixed breed breeder was doing all of the above, would you say that they were breeding responsibly or not?
