I tried opening my USB today and it said,"You need to format the disk in drive I: before you can use it."

My computer is Windows Vista.Kingston DT 101 4g.

I have ALL my work saved onto my USB drive. :( I dont want to format it because I will loose my files.

What can I do?

I've tried several things now that I looked up:

- uninstalling the USB and installing it again.

- tried opening usb on different computers: xp and windows 7..same problem: needs to format

- Going to Run, typing command, then typing chkdsk i: /f . but it said that the type of the file system is RAW. Chkdsk is not available for RAW drives

- Went to the USB, then properties, tools, error-checking but it failed because I need to format it.

- scanned the USB. No viruses

- tried different ports on comp.

- tried opening USB through Internet Explorer..

If I do format it, is it possible to recover the data using some sort of program like Restoration..pref. free :P

OR could I bring it to Future Shop, Best Buy...some kind of place to fix this problem?

Is it okay to log off or turn off my computer,and then pull out the USB without having to do the steps to safely remove hardware? Or is it still bad for my USB?
