  • Can I apply Minwax Polycrilic directly to IKEA Hemnes furniture?

I'm considering purchasing an IKEA Hemnes dresser, which is made of real wood in the black/brown color. The finish as is seems highly susceptible to finger prints and other marks. As such, I was hoping to apply a couple coats of either Minwax Polyurethane or (water-based) Polycrilic to offer an additional layer of protection against everyday use. One thing I was hoping to avoid is sanding the original wood before I apply the finish. Any thoughts on the best one of the two to use, and whether I can avoid sanding before applying? Thanks.

  • Black lab has intermittent leg pain coupled with a popping noise when she walks. Ideas?

Before I describe the symptoms, let me first say that I took her to the vet and they took radiographs. They said her hips look great and structurally, her legs looked perfect.

She's a 1 and a half year old black lab mix that's very active. She's a very lean 65 pounds. I noticed an occasional popping noise (like a joint popping) a few months ago, though its not very loud. I then began to notice that she started having some trouble walking up the basement stairs -- her back legs would slip out every few times.

Then, a few weeks ago, I was throwing the ball with her at the park and as she made a cut to chase it, she yelped in pain and held up her right back leg. She limped for about 10 seconds and then resumed playing. Ever since then, this has happened several times a day. I have reduced her physical activity down to very little -- the daily walk, but very little running or being crazy. Now, when she stands up after laying down for awhile, she will sometimes hold her leg up as soon as she gets up. She's also beginning to exhibit difficulty while in the process of standing up. Just last night, she took two steps up the basement stairs and stopped. I had to actually go down and carry her up because she wouldn't do it. She walks just fine and does not exhibit any pain during calm activity, however as soon as she tries to run, you can tell that she's experiencing discomfort as her gait changes to where the back two legs are moving together, rather than opposite one another.

Any help would be greatly appreciated before I go back to the vet.

  • Is it possible to use a spare wireless router to create an access point for a wired device?

I have AT&T U-Verse, which includes a wireless router that is set up upstairs. I just bought an Xbox 360, which is going downstairs, and was wondering if I could use my Linksys wireless router that I don't need anymore to receive wireless from the U-Verse router, and transmit it to the Xbox via an ethernet cable.

Essentially this is what I am asking:

    UVRouter ) ) ) ) ) ( ( ( ( ( LsysRouter---------Xbox360

If it is possible, could you link me to instructions on how to do it? Thanks.

  • What is the best clear coat finish to use over a table painted with latex paint?

I built a beer pong/gaming table and am in the process of painting a design on the top (an 8'x4' piece of oak plywood) and need to coat it with a clear, durable finish that will be subject to regular use and frequent spills.

So far, the best suggestion I have is Minwax's water-based Polycrilic. I would love to hear any other products or suggestions on applying it.

Also, is there a certain amount of time I need to wait between painting and applying the finish?

  • Is there such a thing as a Bluetooth stereo receiver that you can connect to an audio system?

I would like to be able to play music over my stereo system from my Bluetooth enabled notebook without connecting it with wires. It would be great if I could hook a Bluetooth receiver to the auxillary input port on my stereo. If you know of a product that can do this, please let me know!

  • Should I get 1680x1050 or 1440x900 resolution on a new 15.4" laptop?

I'm buying a Dell Inspiron 1520. Other considerations: the 1440x900 screen has a better contrast ratio (400:1 vs 300:1 for the 1680x1050) and it is brighter (250nits vs 200nits for the 1680x1050).

    Which would you buy?

Can you even read anything at 1680x1050 on a 15.4" screen?

  • Do you need 800mhz memory to take advantage of an 800mhz processor?

I'm about to buy a new Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop that features the new Intel Santa Rosa processors. I'm going to go with the Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2Ghz, 800mhz FSB, 4MB cache). For memory, I'll be getting 2GB shared dual channel DDR2 memory at 667mhz (there is no 800mhz option). Am I correct to think my processor will never live up to its potential without 800mhz memory?

  • Looking for tech advice on Dell Inspiron 1520 displays.?

I'm about to buy a new Dell Inspiron 1520 and I did a side-by-side comparison of the available displays and I have a few questions about them. The display is a 15.4" widescreen and has these options:

(format: Model / MP / Briteness / Res / View Angle / Contrast)

    WSXGA+ / 1.76 / 200 nits / 1680x1050 / Wide / 300:1

    WXGA+ / 1.30 / 250 nits / 1440x900 / Standard / 400:1

    WXGA / 1.02 / 220 nits / 1280x800 / Standard / 300:1

The WSXGA+ is the most expensive b/c it has the highest resolution, however, I was wondering how bad a 300:1 contrast ratio is compared to the 400:1 ratio on the WXGA+? Furthermore, the brightness on the WXGA+ is 250 compared to 200 on the more expensive one. I'm also not exactly sure what the "wide viewing angle" means in relation to a standard viewing angle. I would love to hear your thoughts on which of these displays I should get (price isn't a factor in this decision). Thanks!

  • In Cricket (darts), how do you score a dart that sticks into the back of another dart?

I was playing cricket last night, and I threw my first dart and hit a single bull. My second dart somehow managed to stick in the fin of the first dart I threw. Thus, I had a dart sticking ot of a dart which was stuck in the bull. I claimed it should be scored as two bulls. Is this correct?

  • What to wear on an Ireland vacation in June?

I will be doing a tour of the entire country in late May and early June and was wondering a few things about what to pack. First, what is the weather like this time of year? Second, I have heard that you cannot wear shorts, jeans, or sandals into a pub. Is this true? Finally, what would you recommend as typical (and respectful) attire, in general, for Ireland?

  • Why do people prefer Google over Yahoo! for searching?

I don't work for Yahoo! or have any tangible stake in the company, however, everyone is always talking about 'Googling' this or that and I don't understand why. Google's homepage is devoid of any information or services that would make me even consider using it as a search engine. When I come to Yahoo's home page, it knows who I am, tells me I have new mail, shows me the news, and provides me with feature stories among other things. Furthermore, Yahoo and Google both take the same amount of time to load. On a personal note, I think Google looks like a novice high schooler designed it, while Yahoo could do without the shameless amount of advertising on its home and My Yahoo pages.

Further confusing me is that Yahoo is the most visited domain on the internet, yet Google controls over 60% of the search engine market. Are people actually using Yahoo for its services and then going to Google to search? I really don't get it...

  • I read you don't need a passport to travel to Juarez, Mexico for the day. Is this true?

From the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau website:

"U.S. Canadian citizens are not required to show papers when crossing the international boundary into Juarez, provided their stay is less than 72 hours and they do not travel beyond the 18-mile limit. Non-citizens must carry a valid passport or alien registration card."

  • Would you consider a slice of cheese a condiment?

For example, a slice of cheese on a burger. Not counting cheese sauce as an example. This is a very serious matter.
