I'm Justin, the husband. I try to answer questions mainly in politics, English (all areas) and music. Leslie is the wife, and she mainly answers in politics, although womens health is another strong area.

  • Digital performer, Hardware, and dance music; Recommendations?

Hey there; I'm currently running DP 7.2 for my DAW (doing mostly house music and hip-hop beats right now, but I've been flirting with more dubsteppy things as of late), and I'm really considering getting some hardware, something like a Maschine or the like. I know a lot of producers nowadays use Ableton, and I really don't want to switch and learn a new program. Does anybody here have any personal experience in using Digital Performer and any sorts of hardware to help streamline the writing process? Just curious!

    Thanks!

  • How do I report a youtube user as a pedophile?

Hey there; I had a video of my daughter up on youtube. I somehow made it public (not that it's bad, it's just her at 3 years old being a little weirdo ;D). I've had two people say some seriously off stuff though. First guy I blocked and made the video private because it was just weird, but not really explicit. Second person, however, said very sexually explicit stuff and I want to see him roast. According to his profile, he's in the UK, but I'm in the US. I don't know if there's anything that can be done, but as far as I'm concerned, if he'd say things like that on a public forum like youtube, I'm sure he'd have something on his computer or would do something in real life. I've found a few different websites, but everything seems to link back to other websites that don't function.

    Thanks everybody!

    Justin

P.S. I have since made the video private again. It's a damn shame that there are people out there who seek to ruin everything good in life.

  • Where should I start as a music artist?

I've got a lot of music that I've been writing over the past few years. A few months ago, I was finally able to purchase my professional level DAW with DP7, and I'm starting to write a lot of music. I've connected with other local artists on craigslist, and some of these projects are looking hopeful.

So to make the transition into a fully professional music environment, where should I start? I've been doing research on things like tunecore, cdbaby, dittomusic, etc. Then there's also BMI, which I started to look at and almost wound up digitally signing a contract (they'll accept anybody :O). I don't want to commit to something in this initial stage without really knowing what I'm getting into, and I also don't want to spend any money on any service and not have it go anywhere.

Most of my music that I'm making right now is Dance/Techno/Electronic, and I'm also working on a hip-hop/rap side as well. I'd love to get into more orchestral works for video games and films, but that's a bit farther down the line. I don't want to wind up producing in one field and have it interfere with the others (such as with BMI, a fairly exclusive contract from what I read).

So on the legal side of this question: has anybody else out there done this before, and if so, what seems to be the safest path, and what seems to be the best path for retaining control and creativity?

The other aspect to this question is in regards to promoting and distributing my work. Since I myself don't "perform" anything (for these songs at least), I wouldn't really think I could get booked at clubs. Where do you think is a good place to get exposure?

    Thanks everyone :)

  • Is it completely impossible to break into the job market?

I graduated college this last June, and I have been unable to find a solid, 9-5 type of job ever since. Every place I apply requires at least 6-12 months of previous experience. Where are all the entry level jobs?

My degree is in Music, but I have been completely unable to find any music-related jobs. I've been tutoring for quite some time, and I can always find work doing that, but it seems to be impossible to find a job as something like a bank teller, secretary, or even basic customer service rep. I can't even seem to find a job at starbucks, yet the high school girls with pretty hair get hired and fired before I can blink.

I'm really not trying to sound bitter, although I know that is how this will turn out. I am genuinely asking what I can do to make myself appealing to these countless jobs I apply for. I built my resume off of a good template that has worked for some of my friends; I had a good GPA in college; I entered college young, and I have no criminal record.

    What can I do?

  • Legal help with police and judicial harassment issues?

ridiculous the amount of bias present.

Who can I go to? Who can we present this to? The city P.D. obviously doesn’t care, so I would think going to their internal affairs would be a joke. The city’s judicial system doesn’t care, seeing as they refused to allow him to present –any- evidence on his behalf. Where can we go? What can we do?

(Note; apologies for the long question, but there's a lot of information there that's essential to understanding my dilemma.)

  • Anybody have advice on how to make this hip hop beat?

Hey guys. I'm a music composer, and I'm trying to branch out a bit. I've made beats for people before in Fruity Loops, but I'm now trying to work with samples, and the song I'm trying to use is tricky to say the least.

The piece I'm trying to work with is the fourth movement of Shostakovich's fifth symphony in D Minor, and I only really want the first 4-5 minutes of it. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogJFXqYEYd8 ) I'm using a different recording than the one I link to, but that Bernstein recording is honestly the best ;)

Anyways, once you listen to the piece, you'll notice that it changes tempo steadily; every few segments, it will bump up another 10-20 BPM. I'm asking you guys what the best way to try and handle this task is. I have FruityLoops and Audacity, but I don't know if I should try to normalize the tempo of the entire sample or if I should cut it up into little Mp3s with the various segments at a normalized tempo.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks guys!

  • Is it possible to reinstall DLLs to windows XP x64?

About a month or so ago, I accidentally deleted nearly my entire SysWOW64 folder. I was using command prompt to get rid of a virus, and instead of typing

    "del C:\windows\sysWOW64\pikedahu.dll"

    I typed

    "del C:\windows\sysWOW64 \pikedahu.dll"

That extra space made it attempt to delete the entire folder. It could only delete the DLLs that weren't being used, meaning all of the core dll files required for system operation were in use, and as such were preserved. However, about 80% of the programs on my computer now do not start. I've gone through with google in the background, downloading all the replacement DLL files the error messages ask for, but what usually happens is that after replacing 4-5 DLL files, it'll just give me a "0X00064" etc type of error.

I've tried system restore, but that work. I've tried using event viewer to get more information, but it usually just tells me one of the few DLL files I have is missing.

Is there a difference between 32 and 64 bit DLLs? Any advice?

    Thanks guys :)

  • Need a screen recording program or help with existing programs.?

My Uncle needs me to burn a dvd of his security footage. Unfortunately, the .avi files that his program created won't burn properly. I'm trying to use a program like fraps to record them into a new, clean avi, but fraps, gamecam, and apparently all other programs only record in games. I've tried camstudio and screen video recorder, but neither of those can record the WMP, they just give blank screens. I've tried disabling hardware acceleration as advised, but then the avis won't play,

    Any suggestions?

  • Getting an internet connection on my PSP, version 3.73?

I've gone through countless "tutorials" and websites, all of which seem to have something different.

When I try to connect, it says

    A connection error has occurred.

A connection to the access point could not be established.

Check the security settings for the network and try again.

Connection name; Myers (that's the name :o )

    SSID: Myers

What am I doing wrong? I've tried almost everything I can think of, from going into ipconfig and manually copying over all the information to resetting both my wireless router and PSP to default settings.

I have a Belkin WRT54G wireless router. Is this the problem?

Any help would be much appreciated :)

  • What's the best way to search through the California Vehicle Code?

I just got a ticket for "crossing the double yellow line". While I DID cross the line, it was only for about 10 feet, and to get to the turn lane. I have seen countless people do it, and there was no oncoming traffic, meaning it was perfectly safe. I also did it when there was already space in the left turn lane, meaning I wouldn't be parked with my butt in traffic.

I know that you are allowed to run red lights that have been stuck at red, as long as it's safe. I know that you're (in one of those famous catch-22s) allowed to go faster than the speed limit if it's the flow of traffic, although that's a different issue entirely.

The point is, I know that if a maneuver is safe, it is usually not brought up.

Is this purely colloquial, and the officers I see going 50 in 40 zones (with the flow of traffic) are breaking the law? When the police ignore people changing lanes without a blinker, but safely, they're breaking the law?

I'm not thinking 100% best right now, so I apologize if my examples suck, but I'd appreciate any help.

    Thanks guys,

    Justin.

  • Best way to get a sample of a track?

A friend of mine and I are getting started into rap producing. He wants to know what programs will be able to pick out the back beat of a song if and when there isn't an instrumental track that has no lyrics over it. I know there are ways, and I'm well versed in Sibelius (which is different) and Digital Performer (which might have a way but I've never learned it), so don't be shy on lingo if you have to be.

Thanks for the help guys! :)

  • What are your thoughts on Amanda Peet's apology and the issue of autism/vaccines?

http://omg.yahoo.com/blogs/goddess/amanda-peet-iss... is the link I'm going off of.

In my opinion, she spells out a compelling argument that deserves recognition. I fail to see how people look at countless scientific studies and due to their inability to understand the scientific process disqualify the entire study as nothing more than hocus pocus. Science is not magic; if you can't understand it, it doesn't mean that it's not true. For instance, I don't understand Swahili; this does not mean it isn't a real language.

Someone on the page said that people should listen to their doctors instead of "some celebrity tramp."

Strange, every time I go to my doctor, they give my child a vaccine and recommend vaccination.

I understand that people are scared, and fear the unknown. However, in the same respect that most of these people trust their pastor as an expert on religion, they should treat scientists as an expert on science.

  • My laptop bricked up. Could you help me please?

My laptop turned into a $1300 paperweight on wednesday. It comes to startup, and then locks up on the Windows screen. I've had it for two years, and never had a problem before.

That day it was quite hot, and I think it may have overheated in my backpack (So Cal ftl).

Seeing as it's a laptop, it never came with a recovery disk, and I can't run ASR because I don't have a floppy drive. This is quite frustrating.

I have a portable hard drive that I tried to install windows on to boot off of that, but my desktop is x64 whereas my laptop and the copy of windows i'm using is 32 bit, and the two don't like to work together >.<

    Thanks for all the help!

  • What is the easiest way to get started in investing in stocks?

My wife and I are starting life, so to speak, and I have come to the conclusion that we are somewhat horrible with money. While we make it paycheck to paycheck with comfort and enough to spend, it is nigh impossible for us to save, as anything that goes into a savings account gets spent out of necessity or pleasure. However, if I would be able to buy stocks, that money would be untouchable by me :D

Another reason I ask is that I'd REALLY like to invest into XCOR, the most viable commercial space travel company at the moment. I don't know what websites to look at, what fees to expect, who to go through, or any of that. I don't want to sign up for etrade or any similar companies until I'm comfortable enough with the process not to get shafted.

    Thanks a lot, guys!

  • Compact Flash Cards?

When will 64 GB cards be available to consumers? I've read a ton of articles from 2006 that talks about Samsung announcing their line of 32 and 64 GB CF cards. I just was wondering if anyone knew if and when I could buy the 64 GB, and so on and so forth.

    Thanks!

  • Spitzer's Prostitute?

I read an article about Alexandria Dupre (or "Kristen" as you may have heard). It said she appeared in court to make statements to help their case against the Emperor's Club. It also said that she was not being charged. My question is why is she not getting charged along with the other girls that were involved in the prostitution?

  • How much money can I expect to make selling my book?

I'm in the process of writing a book series. It's a Sci-Fi genre that is an action/adventure book that is essentially a social commentary on the concepts of race and social structure.

My question is this: Assuming it sells moderately well, how much money would I expect to make? I've done some looking around, and as publishers are quite varied, it's hard to tell. I'm just curious if anybody has dealt with cash advances and/or royalties, etc.

I'm not asking if my book will sell or not, I'm just asking you to work off of the assumption that it will sell decently.

    Thanks!

  • Does anybody here actually realize the true mechanics of the legal aspect of war in our governmental structure

I see so many people making assumptions without the basic knowledge to back it up. First lesson; in government, common sense is nonexistent. This does not mean that government makes no sense: it simply means that your definitions of words are not always consistent with the legal term.

This being said, does anybody here truly comprehend how war works in our legal structure?

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, in a recent announcement, said that without funding from Congress, they would have to make several layoffs. This question is not aimed at him, but instead at people's reactions.

The first thing people I've talked to have said is "Congress needs to support the war, Congress needs to give more money, etc."

Unless we are in an official state of war (which we aren't) Congress has to constantly re approve every single increment of money sent over. This is the only leverage Congress as over the war right now. If in a state of war, Bush would become supreme commander. Look it up :D Justin

  • Is there a detailed Server Information Tracker for World Of Warcraft?

I'm wondering if there is any website or tool, or anything of the like, that would let me view how many players (preferably separated into horde and alliance, but not really necessary) are on any given server at any given time? The reason I ask is because I have a level 29 human paladin that I need to run to a location in Silverpine Forest. That area is very near to Undercity, which of course means that I'll get destroyed by the enemy players. I play on a PvP server, so if I'm in horde territory, I'm autoflagged.

I would like to do this quest when less people are online to maximize my chances for survival... :D

    Thanks a lot!
