  • Where do One-Time Expenses go on a Contribution Income Statement?

I'm doing a project for my Managerial Accounting class for which I have to make monthly budgets for a fictitious company. In the instructions we are to find Net Income each month using the Contribution Income Statement format, which is easy enough. Except in one month the company paid a dividend of $50,000 and in another they bought equipment for $30,000. My question is, where would these one-time expenses go in a contribution income statement? They're not variable costs and they're not exactly fixed, so do I just leave them out? That would make the company look better than it actually is.

I appreciate any help on this, because I know that if I go to the office hours of my teacher, he'll just say "It's up to you decide. That's all the fun!" Aka not very helpful.

  • Accounting Question: Whats the difference between...?

-An inventory purchases schedule in units and in dollars, by month and in total AND

-A schedule of budgeted cash payments for inventory purchases by month and in total.

This is verbatim from a project that my teacher gave me to do over spring break. He gave us very little content in terms of numbers and information so I don't understand why he would break down inventory into two separate questions. What is he asking for with the first part and what is he asking for with the second? Thanks so much.

  • Is this finance/accounting problem straightforward or a trick?

What are your 2010 semi-variable costs?

    2009 (25,000 units produced)

    VC $25,000

    FC $30,000

    SV $10,000

    ----------------------

    Total $65,000

    2010 (30,000 units produced)

    VC ???

    FC ???

    SV ???

    ---------------

    Total $75,000

    The answer is supposedly $15,000.

But before you do the calculations, is the assumption that fixed costs stayed the same from one year to the next a valid one? My answer on the test was that you can't know the answer because fixed costs might not stay the same. I easily could have done the calcs that my teacher wanted me to do, but I thought it was a trick question. He maintains that fixed costs stay the same from one period to the next. What do you think?

  • Roommate Dispute, Please Help.?

So about two months into school starting, I went to the market on campus to buy four boxes of cereal with my meal-plan points. About two days later, I woke up and found one of my cereal boxes about 80% eaten next to my roommate's desk, and I know for a fact that he ate it with his hands, so I obviously didn't want the rest of the cereal. At the time, I told him to buy me a new box of cereal and when he didn't, we proceeded to hide the cereal around the room for a week as a joke, but I eventually dropped the whole thing. Now it is about two months later, and a week before we go home for Thanksgiving Break. I need one box of cereal to get me through the week for my breakfast, so as my roommate was walking to the market I told him to get me a box of cereal and reminded him of what happened. I no longer have points and neither does he, so we would have to spend cash to get the cereal. We then proceeded to get into a screaming argument about how he doesn't owe me cereal because I dropped the argument and because we should share things as roommates. I'm trying to become used to the idea of sharing with others but it's hard when you're roommate is from California and never brings anything back from home because he cant, so he mooches off of what I bring. My definition of sharing also includes the fact that you actually shared the food, and it wasn't one person taking from someone else so that they could gain no satisfaction from what they paid for. I know that this appears to be a stupid and pointless argument, but I'm trying to say that it is bigger than that. Please offer your opinions on whether or not my roommate should buy me a box of cereal. I mean, isn't it common courtesy to just replace the thing that you took from someone else?
