  • For what non-religious reasons should I not kill myself?

    I have no job, and no one will hire me. I have no money for food. I will be evicted from my apartment and homeless in less than a week. I'm in debt up to my eyeballs from college loans. I have two bachelor of science degrees, but no one will give me the chance to use them. The government won't help, because they think a bachelor's degree means I don't need help. My family and friends are in the States, but I'm Canadian. It took me 17 years to get back to Canada, and I don't want to go back to the States again. Basically, my life has fallen apart, and I am out of options. For what reasons should I remain living? Please no religious answers.

  • What is the value of an incorrectly minted 1975 Canadian 5 cent coin?

    I received a 5 cent 1975 Canadian coin as change. The coin has a minting flaw, such that the obverse and reverse are not properly aligned (the reverse is crooked by about 15 degrees). The reverse side also has a much higher-than-normal relief, suggesting an unintentional, high-pressure strike. Is this a known or rare flaw, and what are the auction and street values of the coin?

  • Why am I finding C++ code in a Fortran file?

    I am working on a project where I need to translate a program from Fortran 95 to Java. The Fortran program consists of many .F and .h files. I keep finding the following lines in the Fortran (.F) files:

    #define SOMETHING

    #include someFile.h

    #ifdef someParameters

    These are C++ commands! What are they doing in Fortran? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • What would be the psychological side-effects of a long-term outer space mission (read details)?

    I came across this article from the ESA:

    http://www.physorg.com/news175252902.html

    What would be the effects, psychologically, of being in space that long with five other men, especially with regard to the mating instinct? Do they really expect six males to spend nearly two years without women and not kill each other?

    Note: before it starts, no gay jokes... >_<;

  • Why are Wellbutrin and its generic equivalents so expensive?

    A prescription for a 30-day supply of 300 mg Wellbutrin XL is $300. The generic 300 mg Budeprion XL is $150. What gives? Why is this drug so expensive when there are countless other generic drugs for $5?

  • Why do tree branches not ground power lines?

    Electrical transmission and distribution lines are non-insulated. So, why do tree branches or leaves that touch the lines not immediately ground the circuit, disrupting power?

  • Can I think clearly and rationally while drunk?

    When I have a drink and get tipsy (I'm a real lightweight when it comes to alcohol), I always perceive myself as being able to think clearly and rationally. While sober, I've asked my friends how I acted while drunk, and they tell me that I always presented logical and well-pondered arguments and statements. Is it possible that I can unintentionally think clearly and rationally while drunk?

  • How do I adjust the width of a table to fit my cell data?

    I'm using the Writer function of OpenOffice.org v3.0.0. I have a table with one column and three rows. I want Writer to fit the table width to the data in the table. When I select the table and click "Optimal Column Width," nothing happens. How do I make the table width automatically adjust with the width of my data?

  • How do I save money on a very small income?

    MS Money says that I should use no more than 60% of my gross income on all regular expenses (including all taxes). It then recommends that the remaining 40% of your income should go toward various savings goals ("rainy day" stuff). What about people like me, who have a job that pays near minimum-wage, and there are no better jobs in my area? Bills are almost 100% of most people's income here.

  • What happens to local programs and files when you join a network domain?

    I have a stand-alone computer that is currently in a network workgroup (peer-to-peer). If I configured my network to work as domain-based (client-server), what would happen to the programs and files that were on this computer before I joined it to the domain? Would they still be accessible?

  • How do I remove the user name from Windows log-in?

    I disabled the "fast user-switching" option in Windows XP Home SP3, and I log into my computer by typing my user name and password. Windows automatically enters my user name in the User Name field, though. How can I set Windows to not automatically enter this field? I am the only user on this machine (single account). The guest account is disabled.

  • How do I make my Windows file names compatible with Linux?

    I currently run Windows xp SP3, and many of my file names contain spaces, Korean characters, French accents, or punctuation. From what I know about Linux, these are all unacceptable in file names. How do I make my Windows files (mainly audio, image, video, and OpenOffice.org files) usable under Linux? There are several thousand of them, so manually changing them is not an option, unfortunately.

  • Why do I need life insurance?

    The benefits guy at work keeps telling me that I need to sign on to the company's term life insurance plan. I've told him repeatedly that I don't have a family, and I know of no one to whom I'd leave my possessions or money. However, he still insists that I need the coverage. For what reason would I need coverage under these circumstances?

  • Are SD/SDHC cards a good medium for long-term data storage?

    For example, data would be written to the card, then the card would be locked. The data on the card would be read approximately once per month. What would be the archive lifespan of this data?

  • Are flash drives a good medium for long-term data storage?

    Each of the files archived would be no larger than 2 GB, and once written to the medium, they will probably never be modified. Will a SSD lose data if it is not rewritten after a certain amount of time?
