  • What are your impressions on this item?

A group of masked men from an anti-government group sneaked into a domestic port, boarded a domestically flagged freight ship, destroyed its cargo, injured several crew members and set fires. Claiming that their government is unjust.

  • Conversation Gaelic Translation 4th try?

I am trying to find the correct conversational translation for "wisely if sincerely". The Latin is "sapienter si sincere"

Using online dictionaries I got "cannie gin aefauld". Is this correct? This is my family's motto (Clan Davidson) I plan to include it in a tattoo therefore it is extremely important that I get the translation correct given it may be on my body for the rest of my life!

PLEASE NOTE, I know these words are correct what I don't know if there usage is correct. To expand, Direct translation while technically correct is often not how a native speaker of the language would use the words.

I have asked this three times before, and got a good suggestion for an online translator, I have done this already and am looking for confirmation by a speaker of or at least conversant in Gaelic. I understand that there are difference in Scottish gaelic and Irish gaelic but at this point I will accept either

    thank you

  • What do you think about the CSPAN Report?

Every year CSPAN (arguably the most non-partisan news source in the US) issues results of a survey of presidential historians.

Here are the rankings of Hoover to GW Bush

    Hoover 34

    FDR 3

    Truman 5

    IKE 8

    JFK 6

    LBJ 11

    Nixon 27

    Ford 22

    Carter 25

    Reagan 10

    GHW Bush 18

    Clinton 15

    GW Bush 36

The top ten (in order were)

    Lincoln

    Washington

    FDR

    T Roosevelt

    Truman

    Kennedy

    Jefferson

    Eisenhower

    Wilson

    Reagan

    The Worst were

  • Best/Worst Presidents?

I just answered the question who is the best president, by offering a continuum of best, good, well meaning/unsuccessful, bad, and ineffectual. I got three thumbs down.

so here is your chance, please tell me how you would reorder the list and my assessment.

I only have 37 presidents listed because those were all I could remember without doing research.

I think that the short list of bests would have to include

    Washington

    Jefferson

    Madison

    Lincoln

    Theodore Roosevelt

    Franklin Roosevelt

Good but not best would have to include

    Adams

    Monroe

    Jackson

    Taft

    Wilson

    Truman

    Kennedy

    Johnson

    Reagan (first term)

    Clinton

    Well meaning but not successful

    J Quincy Adams

    Coolidge

    Hoover

    Ford

    Carter

    Geo. HW Bush

Bad, abject failure, or wholly unsuited for the job

    Buchanan

    Johnson (19th c)

    Grant

    Harding

    Nixon

    G W Bush

The rest could be called lack luster at best (often referred to the "do-nothings")

Included in the group would be

    Harrison

    Tyler

    Tayler

    Hayes

    Arthur

    Garfield

    Cleveland

    Polk

McKinley and all the rest not already mentioned

  • When you wake up Nov 5th and your guy lost. what will you do?

At the end of a sports match the winners and losers shakes hands before walking off the field. This is good sportsmanship.

On November 5th, when your guy looses will you be willing to give the other guy a chance to try a lead this country out of the mess it is in?

Or will this screed against every element of the candidates continue unabated?

  • Do have a problem with a major political candidate denying his/her religious heritage?

Do you think it is wrong for a candidate having regularly attended services of one religious denomination for over 25 years and then claiming that they were not a member/believer of that faith? Even though they still attend special services and events and evening lead prayer and preach at that church/faith?

What does this say about their character? Do you think that denying ones faith for what may be construed as political gain (to make them more main stream) calls into question anything else they might say?

    Check this link. http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/08/palin.pasto...

And guess what I am not talking about Obama but rather Palin.

  • Does anyone else find this amusing?

The outfit Cindy McCain wore when giving her speech at the convention cost an estimated $300,000!

    http://www.vanityfair.com/online/politics/2008/09/...

I find it ironic that for all the "small town values" talk that the wife of the RNC nominee would wear and outfit that cost about the same as my house.

    what do you think?

  • Would someone please explain the following?

Why is it that it seems that so many people who oppose abortion also oppose promoting the use of contraception?

Although I am pro-choice I can respect the difference of opinion on the issue of abortion.

What I don't understand is why so many also oppose contraception. Wouldn't make sense to prevent the pregnancy from happening in the first place?

I understand that there a certain religious beliefs oppose contraception, but practical reality is that people have sex (at least 7 billion times in the last 80 years) so why not give them the means to prevent unwanted pregnancies?

I am genuinely looking for cogent arguments not ranting please

  • Who wrote this and what are your thoughts about the statement?

"What influence, in fact, have ecclesiastical establishments had on society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the civil authority; on many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny; in no instance have they been the guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wish to subvert the public liberty have found an established clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate it, needs them not."

  • Church and State, Who can correctly name the authors of these quotes? And what do you think of them?

The blessed Religion revealed in the word of God will remain an eternal and awful monument to prove that the best Institutions may be abused by human depravity; and that they may even, in some instances, be made subservient to the vilest of purposes.

"As the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion”

"Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is no more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifiying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory to itself than this thing called Christianity. "

"What influence, in fact, have religions* had on society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the civil authority; on many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny; in no instance have they been the guardians of the liberties of the people. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate it, needs them not."

  • Would someone explain why so many people consider liberal to be a dirty word?

There is so much vitriolic language directed at the "liberals"

They are called wackos, communists, socialists, weak, tax and spend, cowardly etc.

The term liberal within a political context really should mean people who support social change and the general betterment of the human condition. What is exactly wrong with that?

Further it shouldn't and can't automatically be chained with another concept such a socialism or communism. FDR and Harry Truman, for example, were fervent liberals but strictly ant-communist.

And as far as taxing and spending, this is by far not a liberal exclusive trait. The current administration has spent this country almost to point of bankruptcy. Eventually we are going to have to pay the check whish means taxes. Otherwise how does one propose we do it?

Can we get away from name calling and discuss topics in a rational fashion or have we all just succumed to schoolyard bully tactics?
