  • Recently rescued /abused dog with ongoing diarrhea?

We recently got Annie from a reputable rescue organization. Horrific abuse-4 yrs. of living outside in upstate NY all year-just a "lean to" for shelter. All she knew was being pregnant and/or nursing litter after litter. She is a neo mastiff/mix. I'm thinking possibly pitt bull.Very skittish and nervous at first-but we've had here almost 2 months and she has made huge strides Building trust, loving life and a warm home.,getting along with other dogs with no problems. When rescued her 2 sisters were dead-starved to death next to her. She has horrible dental issues we're addressing-missing/broken teeth. She had diarrhea when we brought her home and it gradually got better. She is a skittish and nervous dog unless familiar with people.Vet checked,spayed,shots,de-wormed,etc., before we got her home. Any ideas? Good food for tummies like hers? Or highly stressed out dogs? She is a love and finally housebroken-which was no easy thing since she never had a home.I know she can have normal stools because it has happened. But not very often. Will welcome ANY ideas, suggestions....Thanks-

  • Anyone know of a book with "Yellow Lemming" in title?

I am desperate to find a book that I read to my kids about 25 yrs. ago. It was something like "The Story of The Yellow Lemming" or maybe "The Curse of the Yellow Lemming" It's obviously about a lemming who makes it's way around through paintings, places, etc.???

  • I'm wondering about new dog toenail trimmer?

My dogs (3) had theri toenails cut yesterday after their baths. They go totally insane-freak out and one actually peed on the floor. No cuts-no blood-however I have seen this electric/battery operated nail "trinner" on TV. Seems to me it would take a long time, and the dogs may still freak out. Has anybody tried this thing? Is it a piece of junk-or will it do the trick? Thanks.

  • Dog thyroid issue- Resolved, but angry

Finally changed to a new vet-my other vet said my dog was just a tub of lard-but I practically starving her. Long story-new vet did thyroid test. Her thyroid is non-functioning. Now on massive amounts of thyroxine- and will have to take for the rest of her life. Sad, but at least I know what the hell is going on...Vet said to expect "significant" weight loss within 4-6 weeks. Since she needs to lose 30. lbs-I cannot wait. Can you report a vet to somewhere for like a malpractice??? Thanks

  • Dog thyroid issues??

Well-finally a diagnosis from a (new) vet for my overweight weim- strict diet, that did nothing. She had "terrible" thyroid levels" when blood was drawn, and is now on insulin for diabetes. Heavy dose of thyroid medication too. I am really pissed that for 2 months I have been telling my vet that something was wrong with my dog. I had her on such a strict diet that it was not enough to feed a squirrel let alone a weim...and it did nothing.

She still gained weight. Anyone else ever had an issue with a vet and misdiagnosis or error? What did you do??

  • Hypotyhroidism in dog? Medication?

My weim Gracie was hit by a car last Christmas. Totally screwed up right back leg- We know she will never be the same, too much damage done. Since then weight gain-listless, pain, etc.. Vet now said she needs thyroid medication as blood work shows low levels. What is the "normal dose"? Has anybody else been thru this? Does it work? I know she will never be as she was, but I am desperate to give her back some of her quality of life. thanks...

  • Saab Owners...Please give answers??

Now, I love my Saab -2004 93convertible 5 speed red- the whole package. Only reason I really got it was I received a very generous car allowance from my job- So payment (from me) was less than 50 bucks a month. However... So far I have needed a clutch. Front brakes- tires , of course. I took it in today for my inspection- and an oil change- also my engine light went on 2 days ago. Ok, Last yr. clean and quick inspection- this year...rear brakes, fuel injection issues, tires (again) struts, or whatever they are called, oil change needed "flush"???,a few other small issues. . I almost had a heart attack. Someone told me to stop going to the dealer, and find a small car repair shop that does foreign cars. I am not experienced in this stuff- my husband always managed it, and he died last yr. Is this normal??

  • Need advice for weight loss!!?

My weim was hit by a car last Christmas- She pretty much destroyed one of her back legs-broke leg,"ankle" and all little bones in foot. Gained 20 pounds cuz all she could handle was going out to pee/poop. I have her on prescription diet food- Walk her twice a day- Foot never did heal right- after surgery. Limps . Breaks my heart as she used to run, run, run. I cut out almost all treats, one or two small bisquits a day- use ice cubes or a few baby carrots instead. I have thought of water/swim therapy. She also has her thyroid checked- fine. I know she would be so much better off without the weight. I am following the vet's orders to a tee. Breaks my heart. The prescription food worked at first, lost 6 lbs. in a month- I have tried cutting back again. I know she needs to MOVE, but have no more ideas. Can anyone help??? Thanks

  • Dog Pain Medicine??? Question?

My weim (Gracie) was hit by a car yesterday morning- She and we were lucky- only one small fracture in her "ankle" along with lots of swelling, soreness and road burn. The vet gave us Tramadol for her pain. I looked it up on the WebMD and this seems like potent stuff. Has anyone else had to use it? And if so, anything to watch for? Thanks foryour answers.

  • A fat weimaraner?? ADVICE!!!?

My weimaraner seems to have taken on the habits of my neo mastiffs. She used to run like the wind, constantly be going, hunting and sniffing. Now, even though she is maintaining her diet, she is lazy. The vet totally checked her out, and she gets 2 long walks/run a day. What gives? Cut the food more than I did? She already is on linited portions of a diet food, no bad treats...She went from hyper to "MASTIFF MODE" Help.

  • Anyone else think dog food problem is not new????

I think this has probably been going on for some time, and only now , are people paying closer attention. Now it seems to be rice and wheat based . Who knows how long our pets have been eating contaminated, nasty chemical infested food? And up until recently, I assure you, it was probably not monitored as it should have been.

  • New diagnosis of leukemia?

A friend of mine's son was recently (4 days) ago diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. He is a big, strapping kid, appeard healthy. Had on and off very vague complaints for a long time i.e. tired, headache, stomach ache, frequent sore throats, etc.. How could this have been going on with nobody knowing? He's been to the Dr. for normal visits, sports physicals, and when he got the sore throats or repeated symptoms. He's been given blood 4 times since, had a PIC line placed yesterday, spinal tap and on and on... The poor kid. He is supposed to start treatment in the next few days. What is the cure rate? I know there are several types of this disease, but what are the overall cure rates? Is the chemo really horrible? What about a bone marrow transplant? When is this a consideration? I feel just awful. And when she calls me, she is so upset and I have noidea what some of the things she is talking about mean. Can anybody help me? Thank you-
