  • It's Thanksgiving in the U.S. What are you thankful for?

    I am a "liberal patriot." I love my country, have served my country, and continue to serve my country as often as I can through activity.

    In the U.S. on 11/23 this year, it is the holiday that we call "Thanksgiving." This is a national holiday of a nationalistic and religious nature, both, in which the country is reminded to thank "God" or their 'higher power' for all of the blessings that we have.

    As an atheist and patriot, I find this co-mingling of religious belief and state a bit of an eyebrow raiser. However, I can't help but recall when I was in the military and it was Thanksgiving time. I was very lonely for my family, even though I was still within the comfort of the U.S. There were nice families to take us "G.I.'s" into their homes for a holiday meal. Now I'm thinking about all of our troops and G.I.'s that are not here within the continental U.S., away from not only their families but the majority of their countrymen.
