I am working as a stress engineer in structures department of arguably the largest aircraft manufacturing company in world. I have got my M.Tech. degree in Aerospace Engineering and B.E. in Mechanical Engineering. Once I was a big fan of Yahoo! Answers when it used to be for helping people; not like as it is now - a heaven for spammers. Hope someday in future we will see less chatting and ranting and more serious, thoughtful questions and helpful, informative answers. I get so many mails from users that it becomes extremely difficult to sort out the spams, marketing mails and genuine messages for help or asking clarifications of my old answers. So if you want a serious reply then indicate your full name and location in your message.
Does anybody have this ebook: Mechanics of Materials- Gere & Timoshenko?

3 AnswersEngineering1 decade agoWhat are good universities for doing PhD in France in Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering?
I am an Indian post graduate with 1 year of work experience in CAE division in Aerospace domain. I have Master of Technology degree in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kanpur (Rank 1 Engineering institute in India) and Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from a reputed University (among top 10 in India). My research topic for M.Tech. thesis was instability and modelling of soft gel like material like hydrogel. I have got publication in International conference on life prediction of Grinding Wheel. I want to do PhD from some reputed University in France in any of the fields: Continuum Mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, Composite Structure, Material Science, Dynamics & Vibration, Manufacturing Science, etc. Can anyone please suggest me some reputed Universities which I can consider for application?
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)1 decade agoHow do I save .tmp files in Windows XP?
I have observed that the video files from Youtube, Metacafe, etc. are all downloaded and saved as .tmp files in the folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\Temp
I want to save these files. I tried copy and paste but error message like the file is used by some other program is showing and copy-paste is not working. Also, after I close the web page to which this .tmp file was calling, the .tmp file vanishes from "temp" folder. I don't know whether it is deleted at that instant or saved at some other directory. But I have seen that it is not saving inside "......\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files".
Is there any way to save those .tmp files in other locations or to make sure that those .tmp files are not deleted immediately after I close the web page?
1 AnswerOther - Computers1 decade agoWhat is your definition of love?
I know that it is an extremely difficult question to answer. No definition may completely and properly describe love. But still give a try. The logically correct answer which describes love better than the rest of the answers will win.

24 AnswersPolls & Surveys1 decade agoShould I stop answering questions in the categories except Mathematics and Engineering?
Previously, till about 2 months ago, I used to answer questions only from Mathematics and Engineering category and my Best Answer percentage was 75. But now, it has decreased to 69 %. I know this may increase to, say, 71 % when all the unresolved questions which I have answered are resolved but still it would have decreased my efficiency. In all the categories, besides those of Science, there is usually not a specific correct answer to a question and so the probability of an answer being chosen as best answer, even if the answerer thinks his answer is correct, is less. If you were in such a situation what would you do - keep answering as present or revert back to questions only Mathematics and Engineering categories?

12 AnswersJokes & Riddles1 decade agoIs this action of mine right or wrong?
Today night I was strolling by a field with my friends. We stopped when we saw few people staring at the ground near the bushes. We came to know that a cobra has swallowed a kitten and so the mother cat was trying to save her child. I could see the cat there but couldn't see the snake. After sometime the snake made a small movement and then I found its location. At this situation I thought I should rescue the kitten.
I asked if anybody could focus some light on the snake with his cell phone. My friend responded but still it was difficult to spot the snake from a distance of 10 ft. I hurled a stone at it. I missed. Then I went nearer. Now, I hurled another stone from 3-4 ft distance. This time I hit it right on its head. It left its prey and fled. When the prey came out of its mouth I discovered that it was only a toad, not a kitten.
I snatched food from the mouth of an animal. Toad is snake's main food so I also acted against the law of nature. Should I feel guilty about my action?
10 AnswersPhilosophy1 decade agoStress and Strain transformation?
I have stress and strain values at a number of points on the surface of a torus. I have these values in rectangular coordinate system e.g. S_x, S_y, S_xy, e_x, e_y, e_xy, etc.
I want to transform these stress and strain to toroidal coordinate system. Can anyone provide any help on this? I want the formula for this transformation so that I can write a code. A link to a paper describing this would also be very helpful.
Please help ASAP! I am doing this as a part of post processing of FEM results in ANSYS. ANSYS says that the results it gives in toroidal coordinate system are not reliable and so I am obtaining results in cartesian coordinate system and will run a MATLAB code to transform these data in toroidal coordinate system.

3 AnswersDesktops1 decade agoI created this joke myself. How is this?
One afternoon, a child and his blind father went to a park and were sitting on a bench. The child asked his father, "Dad, how should I play with those balls?"
The father replied, "If the the ball is big then then kick it, it's called football. If it is small then smash it with a paddle, its called table tennis ball. If the ball is of medium size then hit it with a bat like my stick, it's called baseball".
After sometime, a loud scream was heard and an woman in bikini was lying down pressing her breast with both her hands and crying in pain.
The father asked, "Son, what happened? Where is my walking stick?"
The child replied, "I just played baseball with it".
10 AnswersJokes & Riddles1 decade agoHelp with isolines / contour plot?
I have some (order 10^5) data (2-dimensional) in the form
x .. y .. w
*** *** ***
*** *** ***
*** *** ***
w is a function of x and y which are coordinates of a point in the plane. The problem is that the function w = w(x,y) is not known. How can I plot the isolines for 'w' in the xy-plane?
I don't want to use curve fitting for 'w' as then the result will be less accurate as lots of points will be lift out.
Can the "contour plot" option of Matlab (when the function is known) be also applied? If yes, how?
