Hello alls~

  • O-6s, O-7s, how does an officer get there?

    Hello sir/ma'am,

Greetings. I'm a bit curious about the US military system, and I have a nagging question about O-6s and O-7s. It seems to me, based on a couple of biographies of different O-7s (mainly brig. gen., no disrespect to the RADMs of our services), that most have attended a service academy as a recurring educational motif compared to the small minority of those who didn't study in one for undergrad. During a promotions board, would an O-6's 4 years of, for example, USMA be "brownie points" against another O-6 who might have gone through ROTC instead (given their other essentially equal credentials)?

Although it would seem viable to give a nudge toward the all-and-respectful service academies, how would an "underdog" O-6 present himself/herself better? Does he/she have to be more political (i.e. give out donations, participate out-of-uniform in rallies, etc.) or simply rely on luck?

Additionally, I'm also curious about AMEDD O-6s and O-7s (Army). Certainly many have had venerable careers in the battlefield, at the rear echelon, and most importantly at a patient's bedside. For the MC, would an army physician who hasn't attended an academy nor completed ROTC during college likely make O-6 if he/she still worked 20+ years?

Even with outstanding clinical performance and nods from commanders, could those key 4 years during their early 20s make such a difference? It would be very interesting to see a great student, future doctor, and soldier in the MC achieve this rank with 20+ AD years w/o completing the academies/ROTC programs.

I can't also imagine if an MC O-6 who survived the promotions board make O-7 w/o the prior...

Thank you for input so much - I apologize if I sound informal. I mean no disrespect, and I appreciate your thoughts greatly :)

It's an extra credit problem and the metal is very thin. The liquid is clear. What is it?
