What would you call an area of the U.S. that consists solely of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky?
My organization currently calls this region "Midwest", but we've realized that name is fairly inaccurate, as the Midwest doesn't include Kentucky, rarely includes Ohio, and normally stretches several states further to the west. So we're trying to come up with a more accurate name. Any suggestions, be they already-existing or creatively made-up, are welcome! :D
4 AnswersGeography1 decade agoWhat does one call the confirmed span of time of an animal's existence?
The "fossil range" refers to the range spanned by fossil evidence alone; I'm looking for the name of a range that includes both fossil evidence and living or dead evidence.
The reason I'd like to know is we're discussing changing the wording on Wikipedia, and we're not really sure what phrase is most appropriate.
3 AnswersZoology1 decade agoHow do I eliminate the static cling inside a plastic jar?
I've collected a mosquito, but the poor thing's legs are sticking together due to static cling inside the plastic jar. All my specimen jars are small, plastic jars with metal lids, and the mosquitoes seem to all be too weak to overcome the static cling inside the jars. Is there an effective way to eliminate the cling without harming the mosquito or damaging the jar?
2 AnswersPhysics1 decade agoHow do you ship live venomous spiders?
Today I got an offer from an arachnologist to buy some live spiders. I've got a problem, though-- the spiders are venomous spiders, so the USPS, UPS, and FedEx won't ship them. I don't know the guy's country yet, but he may not be in the U.S., which would pose a second problem.
SO...how do I ship live venomous spiders
a) within the U.S.?
and
b) out of the U.S.?
1 AnswerZoology1 decade agoStrange abbreviation/parentheses/punctuation dilemma?
I'm writing a scientific paper and ran into a curious problem. When a plant name is first mentioned in a paper, it's customary to include the species authority in parentheses following the name of the plant. Also, the name Linnaeus is always abbreviated as ''L.'' In a sentence like the following, I have no difficulties doing such:
*Ten ''Raphanus sativus'' (L.) seeds were distributed evenly in each of three petri dishes.
However, what should be done about the following sentence? I feel awkward using two periods, and I also feel awkward removing either of them:
*Two extracts were prepared of ''Solidago altissima'' (L.).

As we all know, "freaking" is a word we use to replace the F word. What is the German equivalent to this nonvulgar replacement word?

My mom loves this song, and has no idea what its name is or what it's about. Could someone write down the lyrics translated into English?
2 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoWhat is some freeware that will let me block a specific image without blocking the entire website's images?
I'm using Firefox 3. There's an option to block all images from a particular site, but I'm looking to block only certain ones. For example, I'd like to manually block specific images on Wikipedia but not all images on Wikipedia.
Thanks!

2 AnswersEngineering1 decade agoWhat do I keep getting sick with?
I usually get sick no more than twice a year. Four and a half months ago, I acquired a new job at the computer help desk in a factory which makes sealants, adhesives, and tapes. I've fallen sick FOUR TIMES since then, and each time I've noticed something very peculiar which I've never noticed before: The flavor of spinach stays in my mouth from the day before I'm sick to the last day I'm sick. It's never within a week of eating spinach. Following the flavor, I get cold-like symptoms, including the increased mucus production, the headache, fever, and lowered immune system.
Spinach is one of my favorite foods. I'd know the flavor anywhere. However, it gets annoying when it's all I taste.
Is there a cold-causing bacteria that tastes like spinach that might occur in such a factory as I've described?

3 AnswersEarth Sciences & Geology1 decade agoHow do you pronounce this Japanese word: 焼きほたーん?
It's the name of a monster someone created, and it's shaped like a clam. I'd like the pronunciation, and, if possible, a translation as well. Thanks!
2 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoWhat happens to money that is paid to employees outside the country?
Does all of it go through the CLS? If so, what about money paid to natives of India? Their currency isn't supported by the CLS.
I need to know this before I can begin writing my term paper about what happens to the GDP of the US when jobs are outsourced.
1 AnswerEconomics1 decade agoHow many ratings do you have on your LAUNCHcast station, and how long have you used it?
I am curious to see how my station compares with others'. I have been a registered nonmember for 2 1/2 years now, carefully perfecting my station to match my taste (and within a few months, I was absolutely satisfied with my station, but continued to rate new music!)
My station currently has 4 genres rated (to block all holiday music), 282 artists, 870 albums, and 10,181 songs. And I've taken special care to see that every song on the station is clean (respecting God, sex, and curse words). I gotta say, I don't hear the same song twice in a month very often!
Anyone else care to brag about their station? I'm interested!

5 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoHow to ease pain in left forearm?
My girlfriend keeps hitting herself on her left forearm, in attempt to give it a reason to hurt, I suppose. She says it's been hurting for a long time, and I told her to stop hitting it, because that's why it hurts. She says it hurt before she started hitting it, though.
What causes this pain, and how should she deal with it, aside from ceasing hitting it?
I've heard that low bodily fluid levels can cause pain, but usually this shows first in your feet and legs.

I am looking for someplace to sell my college textbooks online for no service fees. I'm not interested in eBay, since I've had a some bad experiences with them involving account theft and a purchase that turned out to be a pirated scam.
