I love horses, and I'm a total mare girl! I just started eventing after several years of dressage and I'm loving it! I play the French Horn, and softball as well, though those 2 don't go together I suppose

  • How high should I jump my training PONY?

    heres the deal-

I am being paid to train/ride a 10yo tiny gelding. He's probably 11 hh (if it's a big deal, I can measure him tomorrow, but then I'm traveling to train til the new year) and he's not like the heavy pony build. He's very sweet, rarely refuses(now. used to have big issues b4 I was working with him). I'm 5'2", 115lb, not growing, so I'm little. My question is how high is too high to ask him to carry me over a jump? Hes very laid back, but I do want him to work when I ride. We've been keeping it near 12in, b/c I'm wary of overfacing his size. He can walk/trot easily, canter too, tho he does a very fast canter which we are working on. When he came to me he could walk trot, but would buck or refuse to canter and would run THROUGH jumps. Literally, go up to them and knock them down.

I'm a eventing rider, started in intensive dressage before moving to event world. I have a 17hh Oldenburg who i jump 3'+

  • Where should I get a saddle and bridle from? ALSO, stirrup sizes?

I am getting a 22yr old 15.3hh gelding for a free lease, and I am wondering where to get a saddle and bridle, etc. from. I want to get a saddle with a changeable gullet, so I can use it on other horses, what kind do you recommend? I will be doing eventing, and will be jumping 2'6"+. I will be using him for Pony Club.

I am under 5'2" with fairly short legs, so would child sized stirrup leathers fit me? What size should I get?

Also, I have saddle pads, halters, lead ropes, grooming supplies, and have a saddle and bridle for temporary use. What else do I need? he will be kept at a boarding barn.

I'm not an inexperienced horse person- just very forgetful!

    Thanks for help

  • What online school???

I am currently a sophmore in high school, and I'm looking for a way to take a math course online before my second semester at school. The course is "Accelerated FST" which is really the 2nd half of FST(Functions, statistics, and Trig.) combined with Algebra 3.

Does anyone know of a good online high school I can use for only one class, or another way for me to finish this course before 2nd semester? I need to be done and overly proficient with this by that time because I need to start Pre-calculus then. Thanks all!

  • Which Haircuts?

My hair is chin length. It is naturally blonde and I don't want to dye it right now. I am looking for an easy style that looks good without a lot of time.My hair is is a challenge to style and, to quote my hair stylist, "likes to do it's own thing". I currently have a layered "straight bob" but it's hard to do and if I don't straighten and style it every day my hair will "look like a mushroom head"(quoting my stylist again). My hair likes to have lots of twistys and If I tuck my hair behind my ears for 5 min, it stays like that and even a hot straightener has trouble getting it to look better. However once I get my hair styled(so long as I don't tuck it behind my ears) it looks good enough to get comments, even after a double header softball games(which is saying something since I play catcher!)

So here are some links. tell me what ya think

  • What do you think of this horse?

I know this question is asked uncountable times, but I'm still going to ask it!

I have ridden 2 1/2+ years of intense dressage w/ showing, but switched trainers have been eventing since january. I am a VERY secure rider and jump very well. ie. I got on a GREEN pony mare today- she's been trotted twice and is a very jumpy little lady. No worries about it at all though.

Getting to the point. I have found a horse who looks decently good, and I want to know what y'all think, conformation, suitability and gait wise. I will be eventing and ride at a barn where perfection is not expected- trying hard is.

Take a looksee, tell me what you think. the videos are all pretty good, and I appreciate that the seller isn't afraid to show him spooking and not being perfect.

    Is he worth the price?

Also, if you have time, what are vet/farrier fees going to look like? I know I'll be checking that all out before I buy anyways, but just so I know what to expect

  • Horse doesn't like to be approached from the side...?

So, one last question here, the horse I'm lloking into leasing was a reserve World Champ. Morgan in hand a few years ago, then sat for a coupla years. He backs up when approached from the side(I only noticed when the saddle was on), so for instance, I was standing by his head and went to put the stirrups up and he backed. Like FAST! He's the speediest horse i've seen back up!

Any theories on how he became like this(owner thinks it's realted to the in-hand stuff) and any tips to help with it?

  • Any tips for owning a gelding?

So I'm looking into leasing a 6 year old gelding(yes, I am that person who has already posted 2 Qs about this!) and I need some tips, etc.

Horse is 6 year old morgan gelding, in saddle training for under 2 years, needs some definite work.

I've never really done "gelding stuff" before and have never owned my own horse, I'm a mare person at heart, but hey, when I'm offered a horse in good health and sound mind(well, as close as any horse can get) I'm not going to look the other way!

I need all the help I can get! Thanks!

Please check out my other Q's too!

    Thanks all for your help!

  • How do I look for a boarding center?

I'm looking into leasing a gelding(for free) and I would pay for all boarding, training and farrier expenses and half of the vet bills(nice, eh?). horse would be "mine" and would come with a fitted close contact saddle and tack and blankies. I would provide love and grooming equipment :).

The place he is now is just too far to drive every day, or even every other. I would be out once a week and some weekends(my gramma lives nearby) but not much more as I work weekends and have church, etc.

so I'm looking for a place closer to home. What are some questions to ask and things to look for?

My big thing is there has to be good care and safe facilities. No chicken wire fencing!(seriously, I've seen this)

Also, if he has the close contact saddle, can I use this for dressage?

ANY other tips are much appreciated!

  • Need some opinions...?

I have ridden with my trainer for 2 1/2 years now, and she is great. Great teacher, and has awesome horses. I am looking into a lease from another lady, and I would need to pay for board myself. My parents contribute $350 each month, and the board where the horse is, board $270/month. I have a job and could cover other expenses. At my trainer's barn(where I would like to be) it's $550 a month. I don't think it's possible for me to board at my trainer's, because of the cost, but want my "own horse". I am half leasing from my trainer and have to take a lesson every week.I am paying her $350 for the 1/2lease, plus $200 for the lessons.

I'm going to meet the prospective lease horse on Friday, but would like to know some things you all think I should look for, and some Qs to ask as well. I know this horse isn't as nice as my trainer's horses, but it's the level I'd be showing at.

I would like to take lessons from my trainer on the new horse, but am guessing she will flip when I tell her...

  • How to stop newbie lessoners from "borrowing"?

I ride at a nice barn, but it doesn't have a place for tack boxes etc set up yet, as it is still in the process of finishing up this stuff.

I ride my trainers horses, but I am one of the "senior" riders(no, I'm not old, I've just been there longer than a lot of the other people). I have my own leg wraps for ME to use, and, as I am the only one riding the horse I am with now, have my tack box stashed away in the area between stalls.

    Sounds great, right?

  • Rotated coffin bone Miracle??

The 23 year old Arab mare(extremely energetic, acts like she's 5) I used to ride rotated her coffin bone(front right leg) last December and it has continued to rotated to 26 degrees. The last few months it has stayed stable, however she coliced mildly a month ago and had to be walked for 4+ hours.

This week her owner got on her and rode her at a walk trot and canter after working her on the lunge line and not noticing any lameness whatsoever. The vet came out and took X rays and told us that he had never seen a horse so sound with such a badly rotated coffin bone. I will be able to start riding her at a walk and a trot, and someday cantering her again.

What are your thoughts on this and is there any explanation you can offer? Also, does anyone know of anything I should do to help her?

Note: This is not a horse that you can leave out in her paddock and expect her to be ok if you aren't working her. She's a very well trained dressage horse who is a dream in the arena and on the trails.

  • How do you ride Tandem Bareback?

Ok, so I need to learn how to ride tandem bareback ASAP! My friend wants me to ride with her on her horse in a show in the Tandem Bareback classes. I am shorter than her, so I would be in front, but I need all the help I can get. I'm not sure, but I think she'd like to have me try it out at a show THIS FRIDAY. If you can give me tips, let me know what to expect, ANYTHING! If you have shown tandem bareback, please answer and/or email me.

I am a very good rider, but I ride dressage, however her horse is very willing and he's not a difficult horse.

  • What is a good costume for a horse Costume Contest?

I am thinking about setting up a Costume Contest(mounted/unmounted) at my barn and would like some ideas for costumes that don't involve putting fabric or cardboard on my horse

I would enter my GIANT black Perchy gelding, my little bay arab mare, or my big warmblood chestnut mare

The arab is fine with anything, but she would be unmounted, as she has a rotated coffin bone and cannot currently be ridden.

The Perchy boy is a big baby, but would also be unmounted or at least bareback with a halter, because he's massive. I may have another girl from my barn do him with me, because she is the only one who's comfortable enough with him.

The warmblood is gorgeous, but is super sensitive skinned.

I would be willing to use massive amounts of twinkle glitter and hoof polish, except on their faces(and on the warmblood)

    I have

Flame polo wraps, leopard wraps, red wraps, and I can borrow zebra or green(checkered or solid) from some girls I know.

for the arab I also have leopard and glitter bell boot

  • What foods are bad for a horse? Also, What are some good, simple treat recipes?

I need to know 1 of 2 things...

    1) What is a list of foods NOT to feed your horse?

2)What are some simple horse treat recipes? Simple as in no special flour, yeast, grain, sweet feed, extra ingredients, etc. Basically stuff I can find in my kitchen(though we do have plenty of spices and fruits etc...)

Thanks, also, wondering, my trainer is putting down her old horse(Echo, 34)'s daughter, Showdown(20) tomorrow morning and I was wondering how I should "express my sympathy" I was thinking I would make a card, but I'm not sure what I'd write. I'm pretty close to my trainer(On long weekends I'll stay at her house so I can ride early and help put horses out etc.).

Btw, I really liked the horse too(I've worked with her some when I was learning to vault) and my trainer has had her since she was born(She bought Echo and the people were like "Oh yeah, by the way, she might be pregnant" So that's how that ended up)

    Thanks so much!!!!!

  • Why is this Arab so...?

I lease a 22 yr old Purebred arabian mare. She is a 2nd level dressage horse. I take lessons and show at 1level dressage.

My instuctors stables has top facilities, there are 4 lesson horses, the rest are either retired, drafts, training, or my trainers olympic horse.

The mare(Satin) has big issues:). I really like her though!

She is a very nervous animal. She is EXTREMELLY girthy, and her right side of her mouth is very sensitive, for no reason. She has NEVER bucked, reared, bolted, ANYTHING while being ridden- that i have seen. (not including hissy fits in her paddock). I work her 5 or six days a week(she's extremely fit!) and am trying to make one of those a constant trail day.

    So, a few Q's

What can i do about her girthy-ness?

How do i get her bridle on easily?

How do i keep her calm in her stall? (she has seperation anxiety from her "mommy" a large, top level, like 10-15 yr old mare. we can't bring the other mare in at the same time)

But the biggest thing is how to make her calmer
