I love God first and foremost. I also love Japan, and Japanese! I am an American male who graduated with a Bachelor's Degree of Arts in Sciences from the University of Hawaii at Manoa (I am from the mainland). My major was Japanese Language and Literature and my minor was Speech/Communicology. The biggest dream I currently have is to be completely fluent in Japanese by the age of 25. I am a Christian, and I'm glad to provide answers to questions regarding Christianity as well as various other subjects (Air Travel, Singles and Dating, and more). I have my own blog at http://www.nreviews.com My Goal at Yahoo! Answers: Provide insight into the questions I answer. I answer questions that provoke some impulse for me to answer, or for me to provide/reveal a point of view that somebody else has not. I'll try to keep the answers stimulating and thought-provoking on my part. The rest is up to you. Thanks for all the support! Thardus: Strength in the Rock

  • Will a 7200 rpm hard drive break more easily than a 5400 rpm hard drive?

I understand that a 7200 rpm hard drive is faster with read/write times. But somebody told me it can also more easily break. Is this true?

I think I was also told something about one of the two; that if the hard drive crashes, one is easier to fix than the other (i.e. the chances of the hard drive permanently failing is greater in one of the two).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • A layover at ICN (Seoul, South Korea), only 85 minutes, then to KIX (Osaka, Japan); is it enough time?

The title is a truncated form of what I am basically saying here: I can choose a flight that goes to Japan with a layover in Korea because it is through NWA and I would use frequent flyer miles-this is the option that costs the least amount of miles. The layover at ICN would be an international layover, because I would fly from Seattle. My flight to Osaka, Japan, which is international (obviously) from Korea, leaves only 85 minutes later. This is on Korean Air (NWA codeshares, I guess).

I've never had a layover at this airport, nor a layover that was in a different country than the one that I was travelling to. 85 minutes doesn't seem like enough time, but then again, maybe they are only a few procedures. I am just wondering what would happen-would I have to clear customs in Korea even though I am not leaving the airport?

Essentially, I am just asking if this is too risky, even though NWA seems to have no problem offering me this flight option despite how close the two flights are. Please don't answer with, "Just fly direct to Japan". That is not my question-just looking for insight on the procedures, perhaps someone who has done this before or has been to ICN before. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

  • In one itinerary with two different airlines (domestic travel), will I be charged bag fees from both airlines?

Before the checked bag fees, I was able to switch airlines and they would still put my bags through to the final destination, when my trip was all on one itinerary. When I say one itinerary, I mean I still booked multiple airlines but it was through one website (not codeshare), as in Priceline, Orbitz or Expedia, who do this kind of airline booking.

So, now with the new airline fees, I don't know exactly how the charges apply. Let's say I bring two checked bags. I know that the first airline will charge me the $40 ($15 for the first, and $25 for the second). Before the airline fees, I was able to expect that my bags would go through to the final destination, even when switching airline carriers. I would still have to check-in with the second airline, but not have to worry about getting my bags off the belt or paying the second airline more fees, obviously. But now, will the second airline expect me to pay the $40 (assume that the second airline's fees are the same, because the ones I fly are).

I am only asking from those who have experience and know for sure the answer to this question. This is a very specific question, and isn't answered as far as I have seen from any specific website. If you have a website link that has answers this specific question, please link. If you are answering from experience, please mention which two airlines you used just for reference-I understand that it's very possible that some airlines are more or less lenient about this policy than others.

    Thanks!

  • If I continually pause and rewind a DVD multiple times (to hear a line again), can the disc become damaged?

I am currently trying to watch Japanese movies/TV shows that I bought on DVD. In order for me to best further my language skills, I am turning the subtitles off and rewinding and listening to certain spoken lines/phrases so that I can catch the words properly. This is causing me to pause and rewind the disc several times for the same spot, usually about 10 seconds' worth.

In short, I am wondering if this will damage the disc. Is there something about the lens or the way a disc is read/spun that rewinding multiple times would cause damage to a disc? Thanks!

  • How do I install the component required by Netflix to watch movies instantly on my computer (Windows Media)?

The component is also used on the TBS website for full episode viewing. Netflix describes it as a component that allows for DRM content playback. However, every time I try to install it I get an error message saying, "The component could not be upgraded." It seems to connect to the server that is supposedly hosted by Microsoft, but it can never actually install/upgrade the component.

If this helps, I have Windows Media Player 11 and Windows XP. I can't seem to find support for this on Microsoft's website, and while there is sometimes a Help button or link for installation stuff like this, there is none. I don't even know exactly what the component is because it doesn't explain what it is. It simply pops up saying, "The file or device you are trying to use requires a component of Windows Media Player to be upgraded."

    Thanks.

  • Why are first class flights so expensive?

I was surprised that nobody has asked this question yet. I've noticed that there is a huge price difference between economy class flights and first class flights. Even between economy and business and business to first class is a big difference. For example, a round-trip flight from Honolulu to Tokyo is $1000 economy. However, a business class ticket is $5000 and a first class ticket is $9000. What in the world could they possibly offer that would want me to spend $4000 more for each step up?

I am really curious. Anyone who has had experience with first class flights or even business class flights-I want to hear from you. Obviously, I have only flown economy in my experiences. I hear that some airlines offer exclusive lounges at airports. But what else could the flight have that would make me want to spend an extra $4000? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • How can I download songs from iTunes and get 320 kbps bit rate for the mp3 file?

While I've seen a few other people ask a very similar question, I am not asking how to get 320 kbps bit rate when ripping a CD. I want to know if it's possible to purchase a song from the iTunes store and when you download it, it will have a bit rate of 320 kbps (highest quality mp3).

I have never used iTunes before, but my brother used it because he got an iTunes gift card. All his files are 128 kbps bit rate. Actually, I don't even think they are mp3. I demand my files to be mp3 and at 320 kbps because if it's not possible, I'd rather pay a few more dollars to buy the CD in a real store and be able to rip it in 320 kbps as an mp3 file. I don't want to purchase a song only to find out that I can't get it in 320 kbps.

I am an audiophile. There is no negotiation on the bit rate. Thanks!

  • How would you explain the correct usage of particles in the English language to a Japanese person?

Using particles is so second nature to me that I am not sure how to explain it properly to someone who is Japanese. I know why it's difficult to learn for them, because they don't have "a", "an" and "the" in their language. I've noticed the most common mistake is misusing the word "the". Sometimes, one might use the word "the" when it is not needed or even correct, and sometimes it is omitted when one would normally say it. So, how would you teach the concept and strategies so that one can master this part of the English language?

  • Calculus question-finding second derivative involving trigonometry functions (should be easy)?

I'm always having trouble in calculus, and I asked somebody about where I am struggling. He said it's probably derivatives. Well, here's a basic derivative question. If I get this, at least that's a start: Find the second derivative of the function h(t)=4sin t - 5cos t. I want someone to walk through that, and use the logic from that problem to also answer this one (this second problem should be easier) g(t)=3tan t

    Thank you in advance!

  • Can somebody please translate this Kanji-filled e-mail in English?

I recieved this e-mail today, and I don't know who it's from. Maybe I can find out if it's spam or not if I can get somebody to translate. I don't have my dictionary with me for a few days, so I am really hacing trouble forming words when I can't understand practically any of the Kanji.

I just need the gist of it (maybe a few sentences). I am basically trying to figure out if it's spam, and then go from there.

    Thanks!

  • A calculus question involving derivatives, and rates of change when a ratio exists.?

Here is the question: "A man 6 feet tall walks at a rate of 5 feet per second away from a light that is 15 feet above the ground. When he is 10 feet from the base of the light, a) at what rate is the tip of the shadiw moving? and b) at what rate is the length of his shadow changing?

It is a triangle with a ratio between the light and the person (height). Then there are distances that exist between the person and the light, and the person and the tip of his shadow. The height of the light, again, is 15. The value of him going away from the light is 10. He is 6 (feet tall).

This will involve (dy/dt) somehow, or some equivalent. Best answer must include details to arrive at the correct answer. Remember, this is a two part-question. A hint was given, saying that doing part b) first will make part a) easier because you will have already solved for something. Be sure to label the parts, so I know where you are in explanation.

    Thanks!

  • A calculus question involving finding a derivative relating to rate of change in a certain volume. Please help

Here is the question: "Sand is falling onto a conical pile at a rate of 10 cubic feet per minute. The diameter of the base of the cone is approximately three times the altitude. At what rate is the height of the pile changing when the pile is 15 feet high?"

Now of course, I know the answer from the back of the book, but it does me no good if I can't do it myself. The volume of a cone is as follows, since you'll probably need it for something: V=(pi/3)(r^2)(h)

r is the radius of the top of the cone, and h is the height (altitude). pi is pi (3.14...) but I don't know how to write it on the computer.

I know it also has something to do with writing the derivative like this (dh/dt) where this is h'. Remember, the time it takes to go into the pit or whatever is 10 ft^3/m. I am assuming this is the variable 't' for time.

So first person to get the correct answer and with due explanation through their method gets the best answer. Thanks in advance!

  • When I wake up, I think time tends to move faster, but only for a few minutes. What causes this condition?

My personal proof that my mind thinks that time is moving faster when I wake up is because of this fact-when I used to wake up in the mornings when I was young, the very first thing I would do is run downstairs and play video games. But when I started the game up and heard the main music, it wasn't at a normal rate. It was at a slightly faster rate. The funny thing is that everything else was moving at a normal rate in the game, and obviously in real life.

But one other major point. If I think is that all that is going faster is the music, than it may in fact be related to aural perception in the morning. After a few minutes, the feeling of the music going fast naturally goes away-I just don't notice it after a few minutes. I was wondering if anybody knows why I feel this way in the morning. Is my mind more perceptive after a rest, and I pick up the sounds faster? Or is it just a natural phenomenon in relation to how the mind works?

  • What would motivate a Japanese family to leave their country and choose to live in USA?

I'd like to think of myself as intelligent when it comes to Japan, but this is one of those burning questions, and I must admit I am naive in specific culture background. My friend told me at a Hibachi-style restaurant, his Japanese chef told him that he has lived in America for 13 years. He said he (and his family) moved to the US because they didn't like Japan. He didn't ask why, so now I am left wondering.

My question is what would motivate a Japanese person to move to the USA, basically in hatred of their own country? I am asking for some possible reasons for this kind of move. I am also seeking deep answers, because I am sure that the reasons behind such a move contain a lot of depth. I love Japan, and would consider living there. But my 13 day-trip can't be a deciding factor for me because that's hardly even scratching the surface of Japanese life. There's got to be more to it; something more that I can't understand. I look forward to your responses on this question!

  • How do I reduce the noise when I say words that begin with 'p' when I'm recording my voice with a microphone?

Whenever I say words with 'p', I am saying it with a strong 'p' sound. Then when I play back my voice, those words begin with a loud quick static noise that indicated that I said it too strongly. You should know what I mean if you've spoken into a microphone. I am using Audacity, if anyone is familiar with that. If there's any effect on that program that would make it go away, without ruining the rest of the program, that would be great.

I have already tried moving my mouth farther away from the microphone, but then I simply hear my voice too quietly on playback. And even that doesn't reduce it too much. Any help is much appreciated.

  • What is the minimum wage for Japan or salary for a low-level job?

I'm not sure if Japan has a set minimum wage, but I'd like to know what kind of pay to expect from the lower-end jobs. Like cashier at some place, fast-food, etc. same type of jobs here, but in Japan, what kind of salary would I expect? It seems that Japan's economy stays in Japan, so wouldn't their minimum wage be higher than ours, or at least somewhat better? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Can a USA Game Boy Player play Japanese Game Boy Advance games?

Game Boy Player is the accessory that plays all Game Boy games. A Game Boy Advance has the ability to play both North American and Japanese cartridges. However, Gamecube doesn't play Japanese game discs. The North American Game Boy Player firsts reads the disc, and then starts the Game Boy Player. So it may be possible that Japanese games still work on it, but I am not sure. If anyone could please cite a source I could read when answering the question. Thanks!

  • Can anyone please recommend a good college to major in Japanese?

I am really looking for a college with a great Japanese program. I have three in mind, but I'd rather not reveal them. If anyone says the three I am thinking of, then it will only help me in knowing that I made good choices. It must be a major-it cannot be just classes/courses. And I am referring to American colleges. I would like to earn my major in America, and not Japan. I am also looking for colleges with good study abroad programs to Japan. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Please also explain why so I have some credibility behind your answer. If you are currently majoring in Japanese in some college, and can explain to me about their program, that would also really help. Thanks!

  • Where on the internet can I watch the new Directv commercial/tv ad featuring Ben Stein (Bueller...)?

I saw it recently on TV and would like to see it again. It has to be on the internet somewhere. It's a 30-second ad featuring Ben Stein from the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. This is apparently a scene from the movie, partially edited to reflect the ad for Directv. It's hilarious, so anyone who knows where this is would be of great help! Thanks!
