  • ATSC vs H.264 recorders. Confused?

My question may not make sense, that's why I'm confused.

An ATSC tuner allows me to see digital TV or High Definition TV. I can purchase a ATSC tuner card for my computer and record HD broadcasted TV programs in high definition using MPEG-2. (Manufacturer's web site says "plus records high-definition digital TV programs to your PC’s hard disk in an MPEG-2 format without any loss in quality. ")

But now I've seen H.264 recorders that records HDTV using AVCHD (the blue ray standard, I think?).

Can I watch a recorded HDTV program in 1080i or p using an ATSC recorder with MPEG-2 on a DVD or must I use a H.264 recorder using AVCHD on blue ray disks?
