  • What plum tree diseases should I be prepared to treat?

My son is opposed to chemical spraying, but aren't there some steps I can take to help the trees produce better fruit? For example, does it help to apply something around the trunk to prevent insects from crawling onto the branches? Other suggestions?

  • Can I get money back from cashier's check?

I have promised my grand-daughter that if she graduates from high school and gets her diploma in May of this year, that I will give her $500. To prove to her that I am serious and really will keep my part of the offer, I am thinking of getting a cashier's check made out to her for $500, and showing her a copy of the check. If she graduates, I will give her the original check. If she does not graduate, can I get my money back by taking the cashier's check back to the bank?

  • Re-programming remote car door key?

The remote door key opener for my Uplander got so weak it didn't work anymore. I bought a new battery at Radio Shack. Still didn't work. Radio Shack checked the battery, said it was good. The dealership said I might need to bring the remote controls back in to be re-programmed. Anyone ever done that and how much did it cost?

  • How do I thank a fan?

My non-fiction about a regional mystery just came out. Someone posted a five-star review on amazon. I found out later that it was the wife of a guy I used to work with. I've never met her, but another former colleague told me. I can get her e-mail. What should I do? Send her an e-mail to thank her? Or, ignore her? After all that's what fans are for, to write reviews about how much they enjoyed the book.

  • What did the kidnapper who held the girl for 18 years use for money?

It's been in the news, the girl kidnapped 18 years ago by a sex offender. He fathered two children by her, kept them all in some kind of backyard camping arrangement. I can't help but wonder what kind of job he had, or where the money came from for food and rent (or property taxes)?

That's a food budget for five people, including himself and his wife. That ain't cheap.

  • Advice book about wills, trusts, for single persons?

I need some advice about writing a will and establishing a living trust for a single person with no minor children, but every book I find has a lot of advice about things I don't need, like writing joint documents with a spouse (which I don't have) or providing for minor children (which I don't have). It's hard wading through all that other stuff, that pertains to people with more complicated lives, to get the basics I need.

  • Can you use a laptop while it's being charged?

I have an AC power charger for my Apple laptop. Normally, I plug it in and wait for the light to turn from orange to green. The only time I tried to use the laptop while it was plugged into the charger, the "available time" still kept shrinking.

  • Why did bank reject co-trustees on trust account?

My husband and I are co-trustees for the trust of a friend who passed away. Fairly quickly after the death, we contacted one of the banks where the decedent had an account to inform them. The bank said they did not want an account that had co-trustees. We said we would have to withdraw the funds, if we couldn't function as co-trustees, and that's exactly what happened. It's hard to believe that a bank would let an account go.

  • Who said: "The more things change, the more they remain the same"?

"The more things change, the more they remain the same." Someone famous said that, and I'll be darned if I have any idea who is was. I could even be wrong with the exact wording, but I think I'm close.

  • Plumbing question: why don't they make see-though sink traps?

So you can actually see if the trap is clogged up. There ought to be an easier way to unfasten the trap, clear it out, put it back in place and be able to use the sink again.

  • Substitute for cigarettes?

My husband can't kick the nicotine habit (he doesn't want to). He now lives in a wheelchair. I took him to a social gathering of old friends at a bar yesterday. He was enjoying the visit, but after about an hour I had to move him in his wheelchair to a place outside the building, so he could have a cigarette, after which I had to move him back inside again. It's was terribly inconvenient, we had to ask several people to move their chairs. Is there any other nicotine equivalent that an addict like him could use that would be the equivalent of a cigarette? I'll swear if I had an uncontrollable habit like that, I would know what the alternatives are.

  • Value of old manuscripts?

Apparently every piece of paper the Beatles ever wrote anything on can now be sold to a collector's market. How much might the original manuscripts for a book written by Michael Connelly sell?
