  • Installing a shower pan in a step down concrete slab?

I had a new addition built and when the concrete slab foundation was poured, I specifically ask for a step down onto the shower stall, this way when I tile I make it somewhat flush to make it more accessible. Actually, I plumbed the bathroom so I could take a long corded showered head and wash all that walls down and be able to wash it onto the step down shower. (easy cleaning).

I placed a normal vinyl membrane liner on the step down shower floor along with the drain assembly and inspectors told me the vinyl membrane was not required by code, and that I could just do my pan and tile without the membrane. I do remember seeing how water collected on the step down for about 2 weeks (from heavy rains) and it never leaked and kept it in.

My question is, do I take the advice of the inspector and not do the vinyl membrane, or should I just go right ahead and do the mortar bed for the shower floor? The reason I ask is because when doing the liner/membrane you always have the corners to deal with, and when tiling, you will always have that 1/8th irregular run on the tile running up the wall to make up for the membrane tucked under the cement board on the wall.

Also, since it's a step down, the liner steps over the edge of the area where you step down into it, how will the membrane stick onto the cement slab? I would have to "hope" that the tile that goes down before the step down, be large enough so that it 'sticks" to the slab because the portion that will go over the membrane wont be really sticking to anything substantial.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

  • Who do you remove a brass drain flange from a galvanized steel pipe that is probably rusted a bit ?

I'm trying to replace a shower pan, but trying to remove the old brass flange from the galvanized steel pipe. It's probably rusted together but was thinking maybe some fire/heat/blow torch, might help? Was thinking about just sawing it off but lower I go down the pipe, less work I have on the sides to work (concrete slab). I don't wish to use a rubber boot over the drain because it would stick too high and not allow for me to install the next drain flange.

    Any ideas?

  • How to cover a toilet pipe?

I have concrete foundation and I was able to cut thru the floor and add a new location for the toilet and tied it in appropiately...while that being a bit difficult and messy, it was easy to figure out. My question is, how do I get rid of the old "pipe/flange" of where the toilet was previously located? Is there some cover for it, then I just tile over it, or do I have to find out where/what it's tied to within the concrete slab and tap it off at the junction ?

    Thank you...

  • Any software to tranfer files/date to new HD without Initializing/re-installing programs?

I can hear my HD spinning and working a bit, whereas it's never done that before...my guess is that the time is coming after 5 years, to get a new HD.

I wanted to know if there's a program/software, that allows me to transger everything to a new hard drive, BUT without the need to re-install/re-initilize each and every program that I have on my computer.

Years ago, I would remember having to buy a new HD, and transfer the files onto the new one, folder by folder. But I had to reinstall ALL the programs from scratch.

Is what I'm asking invented yet, and if so, whats the name of it?

    Thanks...

  • How do you deter or kill frogs ?

I would like to know some ways of possibly detering frogs from my property, specfically my back patio. I've done a few searches but all I get is "OH No, please save the frogs".

Yes all debris, wet areas are cleaned out, no place for them to reside.

Yes I know they eat flies/mosquitos, I rather DEAL with the flies and mosquitos than deal with the frogs.

Yes I know they are an EPA protected species. The EPA can come here and remove them from my backyard if they are so interested.

Supposedly their system can't deal with caffeine, so I have a spray bottle with coffee in it that I spray on them when I see one not sure if that works, other than they hop away.

I've tried another with salty water, not sure if that works either.

Have another with pure RoundUp which supposedly they can't deal with, NOT sure if thats working either.

Supposedly having a plastic goose, helps. I do have a huge Razor snake taking residence in exterior A/C unit, I'm sure he's helping out.

    Any other ideas?

  • How to remove a Cat scratch on car windshield?

I have this annoying cat scratch on my cars windshield, and I'm wondering if there's a process or a way of removing it. Sort of looks like a spider-web string about a foot long.

    Thanks

  • Are lighter colored cars cooler than darker ones?

I read some research recently stating that the interior temperature between a white vehicle, and black vehicle, aren't that different.
