  • Where is the best place for fish and chips in Central or South London?

I'm looking for somewhere you can eat in, but nothing too expensive.

  • Not paying back my flatmate's deposit; who's in the right?

I've just had an argument with my flatmate, who's moving out tomorrow, and I'm curious to get an independent opinion on whether I'm being unreasonable or not.

She always told me she'd be moving out some time in September, as she's going away to university, but she never did, she kept putting it back. Then about five weeks ago she said she'd be moving out 'soon, in the next couple of weeks'. I asked for a more accurate date, but she wouldn't/couldn't give me one. A couple of weeks later when I thought she'd be going, she was still there, not packed or anything.

She said she'd be going the next weekend. She didn't. Then, she said it would be the following Friday, and lo and behold, it didn't happen. No word about it, she was just still there.

Finally, two days ago, she said she'd be moving this Friday, as in tomorrow. This time it looks like she actually is going. I complained that she hadn't given me proper notice and she started a raging argument, saying that she gave me plenty of notice, even though she never did give me an actual date. She knew full well that I wanted to know at least a few weeks before she intended to move, but all I get was this very vague 'soon' (so I couldn't even tell new potential flatmates when the room would be free, as I had no idea).

Anyway, as a result I've decided not to give her the last one week of her deposit back, as I don't think she's given me proper notice. It's not a lot of money, just a token amount really, but it seemed appropriate. Ironically I had initially intended to give it to her, but she was so difficult and confrontational about the whole thing that I now feel I don't owe her any favours. She's not happy of course.

    Opinions please!

  • What's a nice town or village to visit just outside London?

I quite fancy getting out of town for the day on Sunday, somewhere quiet and nice. Pub lunch, walk in the snowy countryside or along a pretty riverside, that sort of thing.

I need to be able to get there easily and not too expensively by train, and it needs to be convincingly outside London but not absolutely miles away. North is best, but not essential.

    Can anyone recommend anywhere?

  • How would you go about setting up a deli in the UK?

I've noticed that in my area there just isn't a decent delicatessen anywhere, and I think that if there was then it would do really well. How would I go about starting one up, and roughly how much initial investment would I need? Also, would it be the worst time possible to do something like this, what with the credit crunch and all?

This is just a random idea I had this afternoon. I work in sales, but have no experience of doing anything like this.

  • Can I see who has viewed my profile on Facebook?

Is there an application where you can see who has been looking at your profile on Facebook, whether they're friends or not? If so, where do you find it?

  • Can I transfer itunes onto a portable hard drive?

The hard drive on my laptop is pretty much full, mostly with music. Would it be possible for me to move all my music, and itunes itself, onto a portable hard drive?

If it is, how I would go about it? I wouldn't want to accidentally lose all my music! And would I then be able to use my itunes on other PCs?

  • Will I be able to remove the copyright protection from music already bought through itunes?

As I'm sure many of you are aware, apple are going to stop putting copyright protection on music bought through the itunes store.

Do you think they'll also make it possible to remove the copyright protection from tracks bought from them previously?

  • Which TomTom should I buy?

I want to get my brother a TomTom navigational devicey thingy for christmas (I know he wants one), but I don't know anything at all about them. Help!

He works as a lorry driver throughout the UK and a bit in Ireland, but not Europe, so he'd mainly use it for that. I'm certain he'd use it in his car a lot too though. He has a pc, if that makes any difference, but otherwise he isn't really that technically minded.

I'd be happy to spend around £100, £150 at a push. Can I get a decent enough TomTom for this money? Which model would be best?

  • Would it be inappropriate to go to a fancy dress party dressed as an ultra-orthodox jew?

Like the black hat, beard, sidelocks etc:

The theme is 'around the world'.

I'm genuinely not trying to be racist or anything, personally I wouldn't see at as any different to dressing as a native american or a beefeater or something, but I wouldn't want to offend anyone by accident.

  • Why are pyramid schemes bad, and why do they not work?

A bunch of people at work are talking enthusiastically about joining a pyramid scheme. I told them it's illegal, a rip-off, and most them will probably lose their money, but they don't believe me. How best can I explain what is wrong with these schemes?

In the one they're talking about, each member pays £100. They then have to recruit 2 more people, who then recruit 2 more people each, who in turn recruit another 2 each. Once they get to this point (2+4+8 recruits), the first person supposedly gets £800.

I'm convinced that most of these people are going to get stung doing this, but I'm having trouble convincing them!

  • Does the 4G ipod nano sound better than the 3G?

I've always been slightly disappointed with the sound quality with my ipod nano 3G (especially the incredibly rubbish EQ settings, which all distort the bass).

I'd consider upgrading to a 4G nano if I thought it sounded better. Does it?

Note the problem is NOT with my headphones, I own an outstandingly good pair.

  • Which ipod (or other mp3 player) has the best sound quality?

I've got a 3G ipod nano. It's not bad, but the main problem I have with it is that I think the sound quality is quite poor. In particular, when I change the EQ settings to anything bassy the bottom end distorts like crazy, even at low volume (which I figure kind of defeats the object of having such EQs on there to begin with).

My friend has an ipod touch, and the EQs are fine on that, so I'm considering getting one of those. Otherwise, which other mp3 players should I look at? Is the newer nano any better?

The problem definitely isn't with my headphones by the way (which are seriously good quality), nor with the bit rate on my tracks (which is the same as on the ipod touch I mentioned).

  • What's the best hardtail mountain bike for under £1000?

It would be for half off road and half street cycling. Must be tough, relatively low-maintenence, and preferably good-looking. Specific model recommendations would be appreciated (rather than just brands).

    Thanks!

  • If I received a cheque from someone but they forgot to sign it, is there a way I can still pay it into my bank?

I received a cheque through the post from a relative today, but he forgot to sign it. I could get him to send a new one, but I really need the money ASAP.

If I try to cash it unsigned, will it automatically be rejected? Or, if I faked the signature with his permission (probably badly) is it likely to be spotted?

Please note this is genuine, nothing dodgy!

  • How do I add music to my friend's ipod without wiping their tracks?

My friend has lent me her ipod so I can add a couple of albums to it (from my itunes). Is it possible to do this without wiping the albums already on the ipod?

  • Where online can I see some really good CV samples and examples?

When I google it I always get lots of links to companies that are selling templates.

I just want help with the layout, and to see some examples of really excellent CVs.

  • Can I get dental work done under a general anaesthetic, on the NHS?

My dentist told me I need a couple of fillings, plus some old fillings replacing.

I am absolutely terrified of having dental work done though, after some nasty experiences when I was young (basically when the fillings were originally done the anaesthetic had no effect, so I was writhing around in excruciating pain the whole time, no matter how much extra anaesthetic they injected).

Can I have this work done under a general anaesthetic instead? And can I have it done on the NHS?

  • If you could have your portrait painted by any artist, alive or dead, who would it be?

You're allowed any artist from any era, and actually any discipline, not just painters (sculptor, photographer, whatever).

I'd go for Francis Bacon, one of my all-time favourite painters.
