  • Why can't I handle alcohol?

I'm 19, and I've been a somewhat regular drinker since 17. For some reason when I drink, I have a bad tendency to go too far. I'm usually a reserved person, but after a couple drinks I lose control more than other people do. There's no little voice in my head that says you've had enough, give it a break. Why is that? It seems like everyone else drinks a little until they've reached their desired level and then put on the brakes. For me that's just not the case. Is there anything I can do to train myself to be better under control? Should I just avoid alcohol? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. : )

  • Legal name change advice?

Due to a long winded family history that's better left unsaid, I've decided that I want to change my last name. I have two options in mind of what I can change it to, and I'd like advice as to which I should choose. One of the names comes from a distant branch of relatives of mine that I never really knew, and the other is simply a name that I've found and I really identify with, it just feels very natural. I would much prefer to be named the one I found, however a part of me feels like I ought to at least stick to something that I have blood relation to, albeit distant. What do you think?

  • Aptitude for an Economics major?

Hi, I'm in the process right now of deciding what I'd like to major in for college, and I've been really fascinated by economics for a long time. I've taken AP Macroeconomics, and the math in it wasn't terribly bad; some basic algebra at the most. However, I've heard that the math involved in an economics major, especially at the graduate level, is very advanced. Not to brag, but I do very well fairly easily in advanced courses in pretty much every field of study. Except mathematics. That's always been my weakness. I mean, I think that compared to the general population of students, I have roughly average mathematical ability. Do you think someone with little to no mathematical talent can still be a successful economics student, and eventually a successful economist?I want to make it clear that I'm am not remedial in mathematics in my high school, but I instead can only take the normal levels of math. Can someone with average math skills survive as as an Economics major both for undergraduate and graduate? I'm really nervous about making a commitment to something I'll suffer studying. Any economics majors out there graduate and undergraduate? What's it like math wise? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. If you don't think I'd be able to hack it as an econ major, don't be afraid to tell me! I'm looking for honesty, not flattery. Thank you!

  • How to get a masters degree quickly?

For reasons I don't feel like getting into, I'd like to major in German, and get a masters degree in it as quickly as possible. I was hoping either 4 or 5 years. Which Universities will allow me to do this? And how can I find that out for myself? Thanks!

  • Ear training for AP Music Theory?

    Hi guys

I've been playing piano on and off for about ten years, and I have all the basics down (reading notes, understanding time signatures, knowing the circle of fifths and whatnot), however true Music Theory is completely new to me, and I know almost nothing about it. I'm about a month into the course, and everything is going fine as far as the written portion of Music Theory goes. However, in my years of piano lessons, I have never once done any ear training. In class we sometimes have ear training, and I am VERY less able to write down what's being played than others. Essentially what happens is the music theory teacher tells us what the first note is, and then he plays a melody starting with that note, and we're expected to write down what he played. It seems like others in my class can do this with ease, while I'm struggling to get a single note. My teacher tells me that the trick is learning how to recognize the intervals between the notes. To help with this, I downloaded an app called Karajan in which I can listen to intervals and test myself on them. I've made some progress with being able to recognize intervals, however I'm still doing beyond terribly bad on this melodic recognition tests. I've heard from friends that took the course last year that the AP exam is VERY heavily focused on listening and even some sight singing. Am I in over my head, or is there anything that you suggest I can do to prepare myself for the AP exam? Is there anything I can do, or download, or buy that will help me write down melodies as I hear them? And recognize intervals better? I really apologize for the wall of text I just wrote, but I needed to get my point across. Any suggestions at all will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • Can I handle AP Prob Stat?

Last year I took normal level Algebra II and did rather well, but have never taken precalculus. Am I underqualified to take AP Prob Stat? Or do you think I can handle it despite my being rather inexperienced in mathematics? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • How to view my combat level in Runescape?

Now that Runescape 3 is out, I'm afraid I don't completely know the controls anymore. So what do I click on in-game to view my combat level? And also, where do I go to control what sort of xp I get while training with a weapon i.e. when I'm using a crossbow, how do I set it to just ranged xp instead of shared ranged and defence xp. Thanks!

  • Help with stubborn warts?

My hands and feet have been a kaleidoscope of warts for the last couple of years, and I am regularly going to the dermatologist to get them frozen with that cyrosurgery stuff. But each wart can survive several treatments of that, and even after the freezing stuff the doctor uses kills the wart, it isn't rare for the wart in that exact same spot to come back after a few months of remission. All the while, more and more crop up around my hands and feet. I do everything I can to be as hygienic as I can with it; I know they're contagious. But even with regular sessions of the freezing treatment with my dermatologist, they're coming up faster than they're going away. My dermatologist doesn't have any good suggestions. I think she just likes having such a regular patient. Besides for the topical treatments (which DO NOT work), and the doctor's freezing treatment, is there anything else, perhaps a bit more last-resort that can be done in the treatment of warts?

    Thanks!

  • What's an Economics major like?

I'm starting my senior year of high school soon, and I know that college applications will need to be done soon. Right now I'm considering the possibility of being an Economics major, but I'm afraid I don't have the right aptitude for it. For most of my classes, I can get A's in honors level. But for Math, I can only get A's in the normal level of the class. So clearly my mathematical ability is not quite on par with the rest of me. Bearing this in mind, is it still a good idea for me to be an Economics major? I took economics last year, and thought it was one of the most fascinating fields of study I've ever been exposed to. However, I've heard that at the university and professional level there is a lot of advanced mathematics involved in it. Is this true? Any economics majors out there? Do you think someone with only average skills in math can hack it as an economist? My other idea is to study linguitics, because I also find that quite interesting, and I was exceptionally above average in my ability to learn French and German. But I'm concerned that I'm only interested in it because languages are easy for me. I suppose it's just a strength of mine. But anyway, Economics promises a much more stable career and future, so that's why I'm leaning toward that at the moment. But at the same time, I'm nervous that I won't quite be able to keep up with it when it comes to the math of it. So for all of you econ majors out there, how much math is involved, and how difficult is it? Right now the most advanced math class I've taken is Algebra II, but I plan to take Pre-Calculus this coming school year. I tried advanced Algebra II, but I simply couldn't handle it. So I dropped down to the regular level of it, and quickly rose to the top of the class in it. So I think my math skills are decent, but not great. I apologize for this mountain of text, but I would really appreciate some insight on the matter. Thanks!

  • Where and how can I learn Swiss German?

Hi, I'm currently a high school student in the North East of the United States, and I plan on going to University as a linguistics major. I have an intense interest in languages, and I am currently studying French and German. I plan on going to University either here in the North East, or somewhere in the UK (I'm thinking Scotland probably.) However, I am also very interested in Switzerland, and would like to possibly spend some time living or working there in my adulthood. I spoke with my German teacher, knowing that German is the most common language there, and asked her if I would be able to live there with my knowledge of German. She said probably not, because I've been learning standard German, and there is a special Swiss dialect that is very difficult for Germans to understand. Are there any institutes or schools that teach the Swiss dialect of German to foreigners? I am not totally against the idea of online school, but I would prefer actually going to a classroom to learn. Also, if you have any other information about where and how I can learn Swiss German would be very greatly appreciated.

  • Trouble styling hair?

I continue to try simpler and simpler styles, but still want to look well. I've tried different lengths, different tools, and different products. For some reason, I simply can never recreate what the stylist does at the salon. Frankly, sometimes I think by trying to style it in the morning, I just make it look worse than it did when I rolled out of bed. Any advice for a guy who just can't seem to get it right? I even went to the trouble of going to see my stylist not for a haircut, but rather a lesson on how to style it myself. I really don't understand why I just don't seem able to style my hair into something nice.

  • Do I look Slavic or Germanic?

This is basically a "settle a bet for me" sort of question. I am of mixed ancestry, as many Caucasian Americans are. But one thing that I've been discussing with my friends that we can't seem to agree on, is whether I look Germanic or Slavic. Which do you think it is? Would you consider me something like Russian? Or German? Or Swedish? Or Hungarian? What do you think? Germanic or Slavic? As you can see, I've got very fair skin, light brown hair, and blue eyes. • No difference after weight loss?

I'm about 20-25 pound overweight, and over the last six weeks of dieting and exercise, I'm down ten pounds. However, I don't see any difference whatsoever. Did that weight come from something other than fat? Where the hell did that weight go? It seems like I've just lost the ten pounds, with no visible evidence of it. Is it possible to lose weight by burning something other than fat?

  • When during the day to take lactulose?

My doctor just prescribed Lactulose, and I read about it online, and it says that the goal of it is to provide a sudden, urgent bowel movement. Now, I really don't want this to happen at an inconvenient time, so when do you recommend I take it, so this sudden urgent bowel movement will occur while I'm at home?
